Description

ABAD BARRGWS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANXA.
Letters Pate-nt No. 95,633, dated October 12, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BATHeTUBS.
'lhe Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and mak-.ing part of the same.
To all who-m. Ait may concern.
'Be it known that I, ABAD BARROWS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Yeunsylvania, have invented an improvement in Bathflnbs, also adapted for other vessels of analogous construction; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specilcatiom- Figure l being a top view of a bath-tub, constructed in my improved manner.
Figure 2, a longitudiml'vertieal section thereof, as mounted in its wooden ease.
Figure 3, a transverse vertical section thereof, in its case.
Figure 4, a top view of a wash-stand, constructed with the improvement.
,Figure 5, a top view of a wash-sink, similarly constructed.
Figure 6, a longitudinal vertical section thereof', in its wooden easing.
g Like letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
l)She natiu'e of my invention consists in a vertical tongue, or upright projection, g, above the rim or lianeh al around the top or upper edge of the bath-tub, at the inner angle thereof, the said lprojection having a plain inner surface, and fitting into a groove or rabbet, la., ol' the easing, which covers its upper edge.
There may be holes f f in the Alaneh d, outside of this projection, by 'which to secure it in the casing B, with screws, nails, or bolts.
This improvement is intended especially for enameiled bath-tnbs, and enables me to terminate the enamel at the inner edge, without extending it over a salient angle, where it would be very liable to crack off. The casing being brought over the salient edge of the enamel, protects it from knocks or abrasion, while the upright projection Aprevents the water from flowing over the rim, and getting between it and the wood of the casing.
My invention also consists in the peculiar ,f "orfn of the east-iron bath-tub, to enable it to be enamelled on the inner surface.
The enamel is indicated at s, figs. 2 and In order to apply the enamel to the surface of so large a vessel, so that it will not scale off by the springing of the metal, in heating and cooling, the tub is made more or less curved in all parts, or all of the large surfaces, as indicated in the sections. By this formation, have found, practically, that the enamel can be successfully applied, and does not scale off.
The casing B, as above indicated, tits over not only the lanch d, but also over the upright projection g above, thus hiding and shielding the enamelled edges.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An iuteriorly-enamelled cast-iron vessel, having the curved euri-hoes adapted to receive and retain the enamel, and the vertical projection or tongue g to t the grooved case, for the purposes and substantially as herein specified.
' Airtel) BARRO'WS.
