BARN-DOOR LATCI-I.
To all whom tt may concer'n:
Be it known that I, JOHN DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lookeba, in the county of Caddo and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barn Door` Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in barn door latches.
The object of my invention is to provide a light, neat, simply constructed and readily attachable latch, so arranged that a barn door may be latched in an open or closed condition.
With above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a front view of a barn door provided with one of my latches. Fig. 2 shows a horizontal sectional view disclosing the door as locked. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the door and connected latch. Fig. et is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the aim of my invention, I employ two similar supportmg members marked 5, each having an aperture arranged to receive the pivot pin 6. This pivot pin 6 is made to carry the latch 10 having the oppositely directed catch ears 11 and 12 as clearly disclosed in Fig. 2. This latchmember 10 is arranged to be held within a slot 9 of the barn door` 8. The snpporting members 5 are arranged to be secured upon the outside of the door being held by means of suitable screws or bolts. The latch member 10 has an opening 12', within which is held the hooked end 13 of the helical spring 14 which has its remaining end 15 hooked about the secnring staple 16, so that this latch member is normally stopped against the face 1, of the slot 9 within which the latching member is movably held. The numeral 19 designates the side of the barn, and the specification of Letters 1 atent.

Secured to the door post 18, is the car plate 22 the outstanding edge 32 of which is engaged by the catch ear 11, to hold the barn door in a closed condition. The spring 14 insurcs the latch being normally held in engagement with the ear plate 22, while the door is locked.
Sccured to the side of the barn is a slotted ear plate 25 having the slot 26, within which slot is held the catch ear 12 of the latch, when the barn door is to be latched in an open position as is disclosed in Fig. 5. As shown the latch 10 projects a considerable distance beyond the door, so that the pro- 'jecting ends of the latch serve as handles by means of which the latch is operated from without or within the barn.
An incident of convenience to this arrangement of latches is, that the barn door may be readily opened and then swnng out its full limit and be automatically engaged by the slotted ear plate to hold the door in an open position.
The device is simple and inexpensive in construction and both durable and efficient in operation..

The combination with a door having a horizontal slot near the lock stile, of two securing plates with screw openings, each having one end bent at right angles to form an ear with an aperture, each ear being of a length equal to the thickness of said door, said plate extending in oposite Vertical directions, a pivot pin within said apertures, a latch plate pivotally held upon said pin between said ears and having a latch head at each end, screws passing through said opening to secure said plate to one face of said door, said ears extending into said slot, a staple secured proximal to said slot, and a spring extending from said staple and sccured to said latch plate.
