Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 13, 1909. Serial No. 495,612.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C'HARLns F. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coal City, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawngs.
This invention relates to improvements in fastenings for securing carpets upon floors.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive fastening of this character having co-acting members fastened to the floor and carpet and detachably engaged with each other, whereby the carpet may be repeatedly taken up and relaid without injuring it.
With the above and other objects in view, theinvention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and Figs. 3 and 4 are peripective views of the two members of the astenlng.
In the drawings F denotes the floor, C the carpet and 1 and 2 the two detachably engaged members of the improved fastening. The member 1 is preferably constructed from a single piece of resilient sheet metal and has a base portion 3 here shown as of rectangular form and apertured, as indicated at 4:, so that it may be secured by nails or other fastenings upon the floor adjacent to the wall.
Projecting from the central portion of the outer edge of the base or attaching plate 3 is an upwardly and inwardly turned hook portion 5 adapted to be detachably engaged by the co-acting member 2 of the fastening. This member 2 is carried by the carpet and is of substantially S-form, one end 6 forming a hook to engage the hook 5 and the other end 7 being hook-shaped and pointed to permit it to enter the carpet, as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of attaching said member 2 to the carpet.
The member 2 is preferably made from a narrow strip of resilient sheet metal and its upper end 7 is comparatively long and pointed to permit it to take an effective hold upon the carpet when inserted therein, as shown.
The hook 6 has its end or bill curved longitudinally in the direction of its length to cause it to frictionally enga 'e the hook 5 and the portion of the attaching plate 1 be neath the hook 5 is stamped upwardly, as shown at 8, so as to retain the hooks in engagement with each other.
In using the invention, the members 1 of the fastenings are secured to the floor around the wall at suitable distances apart and the members 2 are fastened in the edges of the carpet at corresponding distances apart so that when the carpet 1s stretched the hooks 6 of the members 2 may be slipped into the hooks 5 of the members 1, thereby interlocking said members and causing the fastenings to retain the carpet in stretched position on the floor.
From the foregoing it will be noted that the invention is of simple construction so that it may be produced at a small cost and that it may be quickly and easily applied to the floor and carpet. The detachable engagement of the two members enables the carpet to be repeatedly taken up and put down again without injury to it.
' Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A fastening of the character described comprising a carpet engaging member hav ing a hook provided with a longitudinally curved end or bill, and a co-acting floor engaging member formed from a single piece of sheet metal and having an apertured attaching base portion and a downwardly and inwardly bent hook formed at the center of one side edge of said base portion, the other side edge of the latter being stamped upwardly to provide a curved surface adapted to hold the hooks of the two members in engaged position.
