No. 95,584. Patnted Opt. 5, 1869.

WILLIAM HEBDON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 95,584, dated October 5, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR STEAMING AND SHRINKING- CLOTH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part Of the Sameall whom. it may canoe-Tn ie it known that 1', WILLIAM Hnnnon, of the and State of New York, have invented and made Mr and useful Improvement in Steaming, Shrinkand J lxamining Cloth; and 1 do hereby declare following to be a full, clear, and exact description the said invention, reference being had to the an- ;ed drawing, making part of this specification, 'srein- =ignre his a "Cl'thill'SfiCtlOll transversely of the h-roller, and "igm'e 2 is a plan oi the machine. iimilar nmrks of reierence denote the same parts. lloih has heretofore been steamed by means of a i'oruted roller, upon which the cloth is wound, and n the steam is admitted within said roller, to pass nigh ihe perforations. In this manner the inner voluiionsot' the eloth are more thoroughly steamed 1 shrunk than the outer port-ion. l lllVi-lltlOll relates to a means ibr subjecting the h to a uniform steaming and shrinking-operation, i. is being drawn along and wound upon a roller, as the cloth is unwound from said roller, it passes '11 in such a position to the operator thatitean be -l'ull examined to detect any imperfections in its nll'neiure. n the drawing- (K- are side ii'aines, supporting the roller 1) and ding-roller i his roller 0 is driven by the inclined or screw-gears 4, F, and shafts (I and e, on the latter of which erank-lnunlle,j; or other means of rotation. he gears being of a serew-tbrm, or having inclined -h, as shown, allow the winding or unwinding of cloth to be suspended, without the roller 0 being turned by the weight of the hanging portion of the cloth.
At the upper portion of the frame, bars h h extend across from one frame to the other, and between them is a pertbrated steam-pipe, i. I W
The cloth, in being steamed, is drawn over the roller b, bars Ii, and stezun-pipe 'i, inthe direction shown in iig. 1, and is wound upon the roller 0 1n the heated and moist state that results from the steam passing up through the same from the pipe i; and in order to guide the cloth at its edges, and coniine the steam to the cloth, I make use of the sliding plates 1 I, that rest upon the bars h, and cover the portions of the pipe t that extend upon each side of the cloth.
When the cloth has remained wound upon the roller 0 thedesired length of tune, it is to be unwound and examined by trzuismitted'light, as it descends from the roller 0 into the receptacle m below the ta ble a, (as shown by dotted lihes,) and this table a may also be employed in examining the surface or applying to the cloth some tag or mark whereby any defect; may be designated.
By my machine the steaming, shrinking, and examining cloth can be done much more rapidly, perfectly, and reliably than heretoibre, and ate less cost.
What I claim, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement oi the steam-pipe 1', pistes i, rollers b and 0, table it, and receptacle in, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 12th day of July, A. 1). 1869. 4
