Beit known that I, WILLIAM McALLISTER, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachu-4 setts, have invented a new and improved Device' for Holding Yarn while being Printed in the Skein, 'of which .the following is a full, cleansed exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichv j i Figure 1 representsa perspective view of two printing-rolls in a frame, with my improvement applied.

The object of my invention is to Vproduce a means for holding .the-skeins of .yarn while passing'betw'een the printing-rollers, so that th'evske'ins may be 'readily handled, and also to insure a more perfect and regular impression upon the yarn during the operation of printing. j

Y ,And the invention lconsists in the employment of a piece or sheet of woven wire or'wire nettingg'of a. suiiicient width to' h old the skein, and of any suitable length, -upon which any number of skeins may be stretched,` so as to be iirmly held, and thus passed between the printing-rollers. v i

In the ordinary methodof printing yarn,.a great waste is occasioned by the various changes or manipulations required in the operation. The skeins of yarnare taken from `the machine br,printingrollers in a det condition, and transferred to the dryingsticks', by which means they come ,in contact with each other, and thus become stained. From the drying-sticks they are transferred to the steaming-rods, and then to the'washingtub, where they are washed in single skeins. By my improvement the objections incident to the common process are ohviated, inasmuch as the skeins are held and transferred from one operation to another without l being removed from the holder. l 1 Y Referring to the drawings, A A represent a frame or standards, which support the two printingrolls, BC,

The journals of the upper roll are arranged in elongated bearings, so as to admit j of a vertical play of the said roll as the skeins pass `between it and the lower roll. l I i D, iig. 2, represents a piece or sheet of wire netting, of any suitable degree of firmness, and of a width suicient to stretch the. skeins of yarn upon it so as lto hold the yarn securely and evenly. VThe wire netting may be of any convenient length. 'd d, Ste., represent the skeins stretched upon -the wire netting, which' may contain :is many skeins as found desirable.v The yielding nature of the wire netting allows the skeins to be readily. adjusted upon it. When `thus adjusted, the wire netting containing the skeins ispassedbetween the printing-rollers, as shown in iig. 1. v

The ilexibility of the wire .netting admits of its being readily adjusted to the action of the'rollers, thus tightening the skeins, and holding them in a position to be favorably impressed by the printing-rolls. The wire netting nlsonallows the coloring-matter to penetrate through the yarn, Vso -as'to insure an even impression upon both sides of the fold. I

When the wire netting, with the skeins, has passed lthrough the rolls, the wholemay be transferred from one operation to' another without removing the skeins from the holder. i

The devicemay be used for holding yarns of any description during thekprocess of drying or washing thc same. i i

Instead of the wire netting, a perforated sheet of metal or thin wood may housed, as a 4holder for the yarn, or such sheet may be solid or without perforations.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The holder D, made of wire netting or its equivalent device, for holding skeins of yarn during the process oi' printing the same, substantially as set forth.' v i l In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses I `W.
