To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, Moiniis FoLenMAN, a citizen of the United States, and ALEXANDER Knaus, a subject of the King of Hungary, both residents of the city of New York, borougli of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Folding Gro-Cart, of which the f ollowing .is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to go-carts and has for its object to provide one in which the wheels, springs, hood, and other similar parts may be folded in the body, which may be closed so that it will resemble adress-suit case, means being provided to secure releasably the wheels, springs, hood, ete. in operative position. The flanges la have orifices therein in which are disposed rods 15, there being collars 16 on the rods respectively, and around each of the i'ods 15 between the collar 16 and the opposite flanges let are disposed springs 17, these springs being provided to hold the collars 1G against the lower flanges 1-1. To the rods 15 are secured axles 1S on which are mounted wheels 19. Preferably there are four wheels two at each side of the body, each of which is mounted as has been described. To the supports 13 ai'e secured pins Q0, having heads which are disposed through orifices in the side members 11 and in the neighboring sides 21 of the body, the heads of the pins being disposed within the body and fastened by means which will' hereinafter be described.
'In order to brace the supports 13 there are connecting members 22 between the two supports respectively at each side of the body. Extensible arms Q3 are pivoted in the body at its bottom near its front, sleeves 24 and 25 being secured to 011e of the members respectively of the extensible arms 23, and in these sleeves 24k and 25 other members of the extensible arms respectively slide, a cam sleeve 26 being secured to one of the menibers of the extensible arms respectively, having cams 27, which engage the other meinbers of the said extensible arms so that the extensible arms may be held in a desired extended position.
A handle Q8 has handle bars 29 to which links 30 are pivoted, these links 30 being pivoted at the bottom of the body. Links 31 are pivoted to the bottom of the body, and to these links 31 are pivoted links 32, which are in turn pivoted to the sleeves 25, the extensible arms 23 being adapted to be supported by the links 31 and 39. which constitute a toggle joint. There are slots 33 in the links 31 and in these slots 33 are disposed pins 311, which are mounted on fingers secured to the handle bars 29 i'espectively. 1
Mounted in guides 3G at the inner sides of the body 1() are slide bars 37, which have vkey slots 38 therein, the key slots 38 being vare preferably of wood, Vand have met-al sleeves 43 disposed at their upper terminals Vso that the handle 28 may be extended when the handle bars 29 are raised. In the wooden portion 44 of the-handle bars there are recesses 45 in which are disposed casings 46 .having orifices through which pins 47 project, there being flanges 48 on the said pins respectively against which springs 49 press so that the pins 47 will be held yieldingly outward. In the metal sleeves 43 there are orifices in which the pins 47 are adapted to be disposed so that when the handle 28 is'lifted and the metal sleeves 43 are drawn outwardly, the pins 47 will slip into the orifices in the metal sleeves 43'and hold the handle extended.
At the upper inner sides of the body, near its rear, are secured frames 50 having a smaller casing 51 with orifices through which pins 52 are adapted to be disposed,
there being ianges 53 on the pins against which springs 54 press to hold the pins yieldingly outwardly, the function of these pins 52 being to engage the handle bars -29 when the handle is raised and to permit the handle bars to slip rearwardly by them to be held between-the said pins 52 and the rear of the body.
On one of the members respectively of the extensible arms 23 are mounted sleeves 55, having upwardly-extending flanges respectively, each provided with two lingers 56, the sleeves 55 being held in position on the extensiblearms by cams 57. A band 62 is secured to one of the hinged side members 11,- the band being adapted to cover the joint between the two said hinged side members 11 when the device is closed, thisband 62 having flanges 63-at either end, the flanges having orifices therein through which are disposed pins 64, when the device is closed, the pins 64 holding the band 62 securely, thereby holding one of the hinged side members 11 to which it is secured and the other i hingedv side member 11 against the outer border of which it is disposed. The pins 64 are disposed in casings 65, the pins having flanges 66 thereon, against which springs 67 press to hold the pins 64 yieldingly outward.
The front 68 of the body is hinged at its bottom so that it may be disposed outwardly,
Vthere being flexible material 69 secured to the front 68and to the front of the neighboring sides 21 of the body, which will support the front 68 'in an extended position and will-be disposed in the body when the working parts are inclosed within thebody and the front is drawn inwardly. One of the flanges 63 of the band 62 will engage thev pin 64, mounted as has been described on the front 68, and will hold the front in a closed position. In one of the neighboring sides 21 which is Athe top of the body, there are two key slots 71 in which the heads of the pins 72 on a handle 73, are adapted'to be disposed so that the handle 73 may be quickly adjusted in position or be removed.
If desired a curtain 74 may be supported on the rod 75 connecting` the extensible arms 23. y
In using our invention, when the device is closed as shown in Fig.` lof the drawings,
the handle 73 is first removed, and the pins 64 are the-n pressed inwardly, thereby freeing the flanges 63 of the band 62 and permitting the hinged side members 11 to be turnedsagainst the neighboring sides 21 of the body, and disposing the lin-ks 12 with the supports 13 against the outer sides of the body. The pins'20 are thendisposed through the orifices 39 and 40 in the hinged side members 11 and in the neighboring sides 21. The handle 28 is then lifted rearwardly, which pushes the link 30 backwardly toa horizontal position, thereby drawing onthe link 41, which moves the slide bar 37, thereby locking the heads of the pins 20, which are disposed through the key slots 38. At the same time, by means of thepin and slot connection between the link 31 and the finger 35, the link 31 is erected, and by means of the sleeves 25, the extensible arms l lare raised. The extensible arms 23 are then adjusted'to the desired length, and they are 27. l/Vhen thus adjusted the sleeves 55 are moved to the desired position with reference to the extensible arms 23 and they are secured vin place by means of thev cams 57. It then only remains to adjust the hood in order to-have the fo-cart ready for use. The central hood mem er58 lis pivoted loosely to the sleeves 55 so that it may be raised slightly relatively thereto to permit the fingers 56 to be disposed in the orifices inv the curved flanges 59. l/Vhen the central hood member is disposed in the position desired, the pivloted arms 60 of the hood are spread apart at their -free terminals so that the cover 61 two hinged members, hinged links, supports of the hood will serve as a protection from the sun. These pivoted arms are held lapart by means of the usual lock devices 7G.
If the handle is not of the desired length, it may be drawn outwardly and the pins 47 will be pressed into the orifices in the metal sleeves 43.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In a folding go-cart a body having two hinged members, a plurality of hinged means disposed in the body, the said members being adapted to open and lie against neighboring sides respectively of the body, the hinged means being adapted to lie against the said members when they are open, means to secure the hinged means against the said members and the said members against the said neighboring sides of the body, axles on the hinged means, and wheels journaled on the axles.
2. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, a plurality of hinged supports adapted to be disposed in the body and `also to lie against the two said members when they are dis osed against neighboring sides of the boc y, two flanges with orifices therein secured to each of the supports, rods disposed :in the orifices respecf tively, a collar on each of the rods disposed between the flanges and adapted to contact with one of them, springs disposed on the rods between the collars and the other flanges respectively, axles secured to the rods respectively, wheels mounted on the axles, and means to secure the said members with the supports to the said neighboring sides of the body.
3. In a folding go-cart, a body having hinged to the links respectively, rods, means to hold the rods yieldingly in a predetermined position relatively to the supports respectively, axles mounted on the rods,
wheels mounted on the axles, the hinged supports, the rods, the axles and the wheels being adapted to be disposed in the body, and also being adapted to be disposed `against the said members when they are open and disposed against neighboring sides of the body, and means to hold the said members with the supports against the said i neighboring sides respectively of the body. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged to the said links respectively, flanges on the supports', there being orifices in the flanges, rods having collars respectively which are adapted to engage one of the `flanges respectively on the supports, springs disposed between the collars and other `'flanges respectively, axles on the rods, wheels mounted' on the axles, and means to hold the said members with the supports against neighboring sides respectively of the body.
5. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, hinged links, supports hinged to the links respectively adapted to be disposed within or without the body, rods, means to hold the rods yieldingly in a pre-determined position relatively to the supports, axles on the rods, wheels mounted on the axles, pins secured to the supports, the pins being adapted to be disposed in orifices in the said members and neighboring sides of the body, and means to secure the pins within the body.
G. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, hinged links connected to the body, supports hinged to the links respectively, rods, means to hold the rods yieldingly in pre-determined positions relatively to the supports, axles on the rods, wheels mounted on the axles, means to hold the said members with the supports against neighboring sides respectively of the body, a band on the edge of one of the members adapted to cover the joint between the two members, flanges at either end of the band, and means to secure the flanges to the body.
7. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, a plurality of hinged means disposed in the body, the members being adapted to open and lic against neighboring sides respectively of the body, the
hinged means being adapted to lie against the said members when they are open, means to secure the hinged means against the members and the members against the said neighboring sides of the body, axles on the hinged means, wheels journaled on the axles, a band on the edge of one of the side members, adapted to cover the joint between the two side members, flanges at either end of the band, there being orifices in the flanges, pins in the body, and means to hold the pins yieldingly outward to engage the orifices in the flanges on the band.
8. In 'a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, a plurality of hinged means disposed in the body, the members being adapted to open and lie against neighboring sides respectively of the body, the hinged means being adapted to lie against the members when they are open, means to secure the hinged means against the members and the members against the said neighboring sides of the body, axles on the hinged means, wheels journaled on the axles, one of the ends of the body bein hinged so that it may be extended outwardly, a band on the edge of one of the members adapted to cover the joint between the two members, flanges at either end of the band, one of which is adapted to hold the hinged end in a closed position, and means to secure the flanges to the body.
9. In a'folding go-cart, a b ody having two hinged' members, a plurality of hinged means normally disposed-in the body, said hinged members being adapted to open and lie against neighboring sides respectively of the body, the hinged means being adapted to lie against the said hinged members when they are open, a pivoted handle for the body, and means to secure the hinged means against the said hinged members and the said hinged members against the said-neighboring sides of the body adapted to be operated by the handle.

In a folding go-cart, a body, arms pivoted thereto, a toggle joint adapted to 'suppo'rtthe arms with their free terminals disposed above the body, a handle having handle bars Vpivoted to the body, and pin and slotv connections between the handle bars and the toggle joint, so that the latter may be raised by operating the handle.
ll. In a vfolding go-cart, va body having two members adapted to move relatively thereto, a plurality of means secured to the inner sides of the said members adapted to support axles, axles on the said means respectively, wheels mounted on the axles, and means adapted for securing the said members with the said means against the outer side-of the body.
l2. In a folding go-cart, a body having two members adapted to move relatively thereto, a? plurality of hinged means nor mally disposed in the body,the Saidinembers being Vadapted to open'and lie against neighboring sides respectively of the body, the hinged means being adapted to lie against the said lmembers when they are open, means to secure `the hinged means against the said members and the 'said members against the said neighboring sides of the body, axles on the hinged means, and wheels journaled on the axles.
13. In a folding go-cart, a body, arms pivoted thereto, links Apivoted Vtogether adapted for supporting the armswith their free terminals disposed above the body, a
rhandle having handle :bars pivoted to the body, and pin and slot `connections between the handle bars and the said links.
14. In a lfolding go-cart, a handle bar adapted to move relatively thereto, collapsible means for supporting wheels, bars,
pin and slot connections between the col-v lapsible means and the bars adapted for holding the collapsible means in place, and means by which the'handle bar is adapted for operating the bars.
l5. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hingedmembers at one of itss'id'es, a plurality of hinged supports adaptedjto be disposed in the body and also to lie against'thetwo said members when they are disposed against neighboring sides lof the body, two flanges with orifices therein, se-
cured to each of the supports, rods dis bers being adapted to open and lie against the neighboring sides respectively of the body, the hinged means being adapted to lie against the members when they are open, means to secure the hinged meansagamst the members and the members against the said neighboring sides of the body, axles on the hinged means, wheels journaled on the axles, a handle having handle bars pivoted in the body, and means'connected with the handle bars to lock the means to secure the plurality of hinged means against the members.
17. In a folding go-cart, collapsible means adapted for supporting wheels, pins on the collapsible means, and bars having keyhole slots adapted for engaging the pins to hold the collapsible means in operative position.
18. In a folding go-cart, a body, collapsible means for supporting the Vwheels, wheels mounted thereon, arms pivoted to the body, links pivoted inthe body for supporting the said arms, a handle having handle bars, links by which the handle bars are pivoted to the body, fingers on the handle bars, a pin and slot connection between the fingers and the first named links, pins with heads on the collapsible means, the pins being adapted to be disposed in orifices in the body, bars with key hole slots which are in alinement with the orifices in the body, and a third set of links which connect with the bars the links by which the handle bars are pivoted to the body.
19. In a folding go-cart, a body, collapsible means for supporting wheels, wheels mounted thereon,`arms pivoted to the body,
links pivoted in `the' body for supporting the said arms, a handle having handle bars, links by which the handle bars are pivoted to the body, fingers on the handle bars, a pin and slot connection-between the fingers and the first named links, pins with heads on Vthe collapsible means, the pins being adapted to be disposed in orifices in the body,
bars with key hole slots which are in alineinent with the orifices in the body, a third set of links which connect with the bars the links by which the handle bars are pivoted to the body, and means to hold the handle bars rearwardly.
20. In a folding go-cart, a body, collapsible means for supporting `the wheels, wheels mounted thereon, arms pivoted to the body,
"links pivoted in the body for supporting the said arms, a handle having handle bars, links ioo collapsible means,
by which the handle bars are pivoted to the body, fingers on the handle bars, a pin and slot connection between the fingers and the first named links, pins with heads on the the pins being adapted to be disposed in orifices in the body, bars with key hole slots which are in alinement with the orifices in the body, a third set of links which connect with the bars the links by which the handle bars are pivoted to the body, pins in the body adapted to engage the handle bars to prevent them from moving forwardly, and means to hold the pins yieldingly extended.
21. In a folding go-cart, a body, arms vpivoted thereto, pivoted means adapted to support the arms with their free terminals disposed above the body, a handle having handle bars, the handle bars having pivoted connection with the body, means by which the handle bars are adapted to operate the first-named means, pins adapted to engage and prevent the handle bars from moving inwardly when they are raised, and means adapted for holding the pins yieldingly in predetermined positions.
22. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, links hinged to the hinged members, supports hinged to the links respectively, rods, means adapted for holding the rods yieldingly in predetermined positions relatively to the supports, axles on the rods, wheels mounted on the axles, pins with heads secured to the supports, the
in the said members and in the neighboring sides of the body, arms pivoted in the body, links pivoted to the body adapted for supporting the arms, a handle having handle pins being adapted to be disposed 1n orifices 40 bars, links by which the handle bars are pivoted to the body, fingers on the handle bars, pin and slot connections between the fingers and the second-mentioned links, bars with keyhole slots which are in alinement with the orifices in the neighboring sides of the body, and a third set of links which connect with the said bars the links to which the handle bars are pivoted.

In a folding go-oart, a body having two members hinged thereto, a plurality of means for supporting wheels hinged to the said members, the said means being adapted to be disposed within the body or against the members when they are open, and means for securing the said means against the said members when they are open.
24. In a folding go-eart, a pivoted handle bar, collapsible means adapted for supporting wheels, pins on the collapsible means,
bars having keyhole slots adapted for engaging the pins for holding the collapsible means in operative position, and links connecting the handle bar with the bars by which the former is adapted to operate the latter.
25. In a folding go-cart, a body, handle bars, links connecting the handle bars with the body, collapsible means adapted for supporting wheels, pins on the collapsible means, bars having keyhole slots adapted for engaging the pins for holding the collapsible means in operative position, and additional links connecting the first-named links with the bars.

In a folding go-cart, a body, handle bars, links connecting the handle bars with the body, collapsible means adapted for supporting wheels, pins on the collapsible means, bars having keyhole slots adapted for engaging the pins for holding the collapsible means in operative position, and additional links pivoted to the first-named links, there being pin and slot connections between the additional links and the said bars.
27. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, a plurality of means normally disposed in the body, adapted for supporting axles, the said members being adapted to open and lie against neighboring sides respectively of the body, the plurality of means being adapted to 11e against the said members when they are open, means to secure the plurality of means against the said members and the said members against -the said neighboring sides of the body, axles on the plurality of means, and wheels journaled on the axles.
28. In a folding o-cart, a body having twoV members movabIe relatively thereto, a plurality of hinged means disposed in the body, the said members being adapted to open and lie against neighboring sides respectively of the body, the hinged means being adapted to lie against the said members when they are open, means adapted to secure the hinged means against the said members and the said members against the said neighboring sides of the body, axles on the hinged means, and wheels journaled on the axles.
29. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, means normally disposed in the body adapted for supporting wheels, the said members being adapted to open and lie against neighboring sides respectively of the body, the said means being adapted to lie against the said members when they are open, means to secure the said means against the said members and the said members against the said neighboring sides of the body, axles on the first-mentioned means, and wheels journaled on the axles, a third' member of the body being hinged thereto and being adapted to project outwardly at the front of the body.
30. In a folding go-cart, a body having two hinged members, means normally disposed in the body adapted to be secured to the outer side of the body to serve as supports for Wheels, means adapted for secur- 130 ing the hinged membersto the outer sides ofv the body, a band on the edge of one ofthe l Vtwo hinged members adapted to cover the joint between the said two hinged members when they are closed, and means adapted for detachably securing the band to the body.
31. In a folding' go-Cart, a body having two hinged members, means normally disposed in the body adapted to be secured to the outer side of the body to serve as vsupports for wheels, means for securing rthe hinged members to fthe outer side of theVA body, 'and means or'seeuring the said two Ymembers tothe body in closed positions.
