COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
Application filed February 26, 1909. Serial No. 480,129.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. DRURY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bloomsdale, in the county of Ste. Genevieve and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined locks and latches, and one of the principal objects of the same is toprovide a simple and efiieient lock and latch designed more particularly for use on buildings, such as corn cribs, graineries, stables, smoke houses, chicken houses and other structures and which can be operated as a safe and reliable latch and which can also be locked when desired to render the latch inoperative.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock and latch in which the operative parts are inclosed and which cannot be operated by animals.
It is a well known fact that the gravity latches or hasps in use on farm out-buildings can be operated by animals to gain access to the foods stored in said out-houses.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a combined lock and latch which cannot be operated by accident or by an animal in any way.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combined lock and latch made in accordance with my invention and shown in position for use upon a door. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the lock and latch. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the gravity bar. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lock detached from its supporting block. Fi 6 is a side view of a key for operating the lock.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a supporting block having upon one side thereof a recess in which is fitted an ordinary lock 2 provided with a bolt 3 which may be moved to project from one side or the other of the lock 2 by means of a suitable key 4:. In the supporting block 1 is a vertical recess 5, and mounted to move freely in the recess 5 is a gravity bar 6, said bar having a slot 7 therein adapted to receive the bolt 3 of the lock 2, when said gravity bar is in its lower or looking position. At one side of the gravity bar 6 is a recess 8. A latch bar 9 is mounted in a recess 10 in the supporting block 1, said latch bar having a recess 11 therein of a width slightly greater than the gravity bar 6. The latch bar 9 is provided with a slot 12, and when the lock and latch is secured in place upon the door 13 of a building by means of screws or bolts 14 the latch bar 9 is limited in its movements by means of a headed stud or nail 15 driven through the slot 12 into the door as shown more particularlyin Fig. 1. A suitable keeper 16 is connected to the building or to a double door 13.
The operation of my lock and latch may be briefly described as follows: By inserting the key 1 in the keyhole a which is in alinement with the keyhole I) in the lock 2, the bolt 3 may be moved to the right or left to either lock the gravity bar 6 in the position shown in I ig. 2 to hold the latch bar 9 against operation or the bolt 3 may be moved to the other side of the lock 2 to release the gravity bar 6, in which case by placing the finger underneath the block 1, the gravity bar 6 may be lifted to release the latch bar 9 and to permit it to be slid to one side or the other to either engage the keeper 16 or to disengage the same and to permit the door to be opened. If the combined latch and lock is to be used as a latch only the gravity bar 6 is released by the bolt 3 and then serves only as a gravity drop or bar to drop into the recess 11 in the latch bar 9 and to be lifted by the finger to release the bar 9. However, should it be desired at any time to lock the latch bar 9 the key is used for shifting the bolt 3 to lock the gravity bar 6 in its lowermost position.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a combined latch and lock made in accordance with my invention is simple in construction, may be used as a lock or as a latch, and that when used as a latch cannot be operated by accident or by a person without knowledge of the construction of the same.
I claim The herein described combined lock and latch consisting of a block or support, a lock secured within said block, said lock having a bolt adapted to be projected from opposite sides thereof, said block being pro vided with a recess therein, a gravity bar provided with a slot and mounted in said In testimony whereof I aflix any signature recess, said bar adapted to be engaged by in presence of two Witnesses.
the lock bolt, and a latch bar provided with n a recess to be engaged by said gravity bar, CLARENCE DRURY' said latch bar having a slot therein to be Witnesses:
engaged by a fastener driven into the door JASPER B. RIGKARD,
to permit said bolt to slide. NORVEL W. JARVIS.
