S'nmnox, u citizen of the United States, residing at l.l nn, in the county of Essex and State of li nssachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather-Punchine Machines; and l do hereby declare the following to be u full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en` able others skilled in the art. to which it ap wrtaina to make and use the same.
he present invention relates to leather punching machines and particularl to machines for forming ornamental per orations or cuts in the various parts ofshoe u pers in o'rder to give lsuch parts a finishedand pleasing appearance in the completed shoe.
The object, of the invention is to provide a machine of the class referred to of iinprovcd construction and mode of o ration.
Leather punching machines w ich are used to form ornamental perforutions or c uts in thc tips or other parte ot a slice upper usually comprise a reciprocating punch und means for intermittently feeding the work beneath thc punch, and the various features of the present invention relate to ccitain improvements in the means for feeding and ruiding the work beneath the punch and for oldiiig it in proper position.
One fcuturc of the invention consists in an improved means for supporting and actuutiiur the presser foot which bears upon the wort in roximity to the unch. In accordance witi this feature otpthc invention the prcsscr foot. is mounted upon the lower end of a vertically movable rod and is arranged to bear against tho work beneath the punch- .stock upon which the punch is mounted and in close proximity to the punch, and means arc provided for raising the rod and for movingr its lower end laterally in order to rcmove the presser foot from beneath the punch-stock. The. provision of means for moving the lower end ofthe rod, upon which the presser foot is mounted, laterally as it is raiised allowstbc presser foot to bear upon the work close to thc point. at which it is acted upon bv thc punch and at the same tinic thc presser foot can be raised clear of thc work when desired without contacting with thc punch-stock. ln the preferred embodiincnt of this feature of the invention hereinafter described. the upper cud. of thc I rod upon which the presser foot is mounted is arranged to reciprocate through u pivoted Va change is made in the size or bearing and the rod is swung during its u ward movement iii order to remove tio presser foot from beneath the punch stock y the engagement with a fixed part of the machine of a pro'ection on the lower end of the rod. llt will understood that the rod may be otherwise mounted and actuated wit iout departing from this feature of my invention broadly considered althou h the construction above referied to is t e one which ll prefer to use on account of its simplicity and ease and certaintyr of o ration an is the best construction which have been able to devise.
Another feature of the invention consists in an improved adjustable edge ga're and means for locking it in adjusted osition. In accordance with this feature o the invention the edge gage is so mounted and supported as to be ca able of two adjustments, one toward and rom the punch transversely to the line of feed and the other toward and from the punch in the line of feed and a single means is provided for lockin the edge gage in adjusted osition. It is esirable in machines of this c ass that tho'edge ga be located as near as possible to the punci in order that the perforations or cuts ma be located at the same distance from the e ge of the work whether the edge of the work is straight or convexly or ccn-I cavely curved. The provision of the ed gage above referred to,l adjustable in two directions, and a single means for locking the guage in .ition, allows the rgerntor to rea ily an quickly adjust the ge to bring: it into the desired position w enever shape of the punch. The construction which I prefer to use and which embodies this feature of my invention in a simple and convenient. form, comprises an edge gage formed upon or secured to an arm pivotally mounted in a block so as to be capable of a swinging movement to adjust the ed gage toward and from the punch in the line of feed, a support upon which the block is mounted so becapable of movin thereon to adjust the edge ge toward an from the punc i transverse y to the' line of feed and a set screw for locking the block and arm in position.

It will be evident that the extent ot' the individual feeding movements imparted to the feed wheel will depend upon the iosition of the fulcrum of the lever l? and if tlie fulcruin is adjusted the length of the individual feeding movements \\ill be correspondingly varied. In order to adjust the normal length of the individual feeding7 movements the block tti is adjustably nimmted upon a rod 55, the block being provided with a split. collar which embraces the rod and being clamped to the rod by a clamping screw 56.
