. of the United-States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Machines,
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings,
'. forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a punching machine for punching holes through a plurality of sheets of paper assembled in book form or otherwise and the invention has for its object to provide a construction in a machine punch and work clamping member shown partly in elevation and partly in vertical section. Fig. -V is an enlarged elevation of the punch head. Fig. VI is'a view similar to Fig. I illustrating the modification.

11 is a lever pivoted to the frame of the machine at 12 and provided .with a pair of forwardly extending arms 13 that engage the punch head by seating in its notches 10. The rear arm of the lever 11 has connected to it a pitman 14.
l5 designates a power shaft-and 16 are cam wheels fixed to said power shaft. The pitman 14 is connected in the remainder a working. face 19 which is made flat to said cam wheels by a wrist 17, whereby said pitman is operated during the rotation of said cam wheels and serves in turn to operate the lever 11 which actuates the punch head 7. Each of the cam wheels 16 is of segmental form so that it has a peripheral working face that extends in part in an arc of a circle as seen at 18, and is or other shape that; renders it a face which is offset from the arc of the remainder of the wheel.
20 designates a tubular clamping member that is freely. mounted in the framo cross member 6 beneath punch head is provided the'die 3 supported by the table 1. The punch head stem operates in this clamping member, and in the lower end of the clamping member is a guide bushing 21 in which the punch9 operates. The punch fits snugly in the bore of the bushing, which is herein considered as a part of the clamping member 20, andsaid bushing therefore constitutes a rigid guide for thepunch while it is entering the sheets of pap'er to be punched and-passing through the sheets in punching action and as a consequence the bushing serves to pretext lateral movement of the punch and breakage thereof at the timementioned, due to the said bushing being brought firmly into contact with the sheets before the punch begins to enter thereinto.
22 designates hanger links pivoted at 23 to the frame of the machine above thecam wheels 16. These hanger links serve as supports for a cross shaft 24 on which is mounted a pair of rollers 25 with which the working faces of the cam wheels 16 cooperate.
26 designates a throw rod that is loosely fitted at its rear end 'to the cross shaft 24 so that said end of the rod is supported by the hanger links22.
27 is a pressure spring that is supported by the frame of the machine and the free end of which is loosely c0nnected tothe throw rod 26 by a pair ofhanger links 28v which are fitted to the throw rod at a point intermediate of its ends. The forward end of the throw rod is loosely connected to the clamping member 20 by a pair of links 29. N
During the practical use of my machine the clamping member 20 is reciprocated to and from the work bencath it that is, the sheets of paper to be-punchedin the following manner: Assuming the parts to be in the positions illustrated in full lines Fig. I, the bottom of the clamping member, which includes the guide bushing 21, occupies a position above the sheets of paper indicated at A and one of the rollers 25 carried by the throw rod 26 occupies a position opposing the -offset working face 19 of the mm wheel corresponding thereto. Then as said cam wheel begins to rotate in the direction of the arrow Fig. I, the working face 19 of said cam wheel cooperates with the opposing roller 25 and moves said roller in a forward direction, whereby the throw rod 26 is moved forward to a corresponding degree. In the initial movement of these parts the centers of thepivots connecting the throw rod to the links 29 that unite said rod to the clamping member 20 arelowered from the heavy dotted lined positions a to the position indicated by the light dotted line b and the clamping member is lowered a corresponding degree. This lowering of the clamping member causes it to assume a position upon the work A which thus becomes a resistance member relative to the clamping member. The continued rotation of by the dot and dash line 0, Fig. I.
the cam wheel causes a continued forward movement of the throw rod 26'and the further downward movement of the clamping member is prevented the links 28 are swung-forwardly, the pres ure spring'27 yielding in an upward direction to permit such movement oi the links 28. (.oineident with the actuation of the parts just mentioned the links 29 that connect the throw rod the clamping member are moved upwardly and forwardly, the movement of the parts being continued until they assume the position indicated The actuation of the parts to move them as described takes place while the working face 19 of the cam wheel is in contact with the corresponding roller 25, and when the roller passes i'rom-said working face 19 to the curved working face 18 the'parts are held in the. positions set forth with a uniiorm degree of downward thrust exerted upon the work A by the clamping member 20 which continues until the working face 19 is again brought into contact with the roller 25 opposing the cam wheel. During this peribmhe pressure spring 27 exerts its power upon the clamping member. As soon; however, as the roller 25 moves onto the cam wheel working [ace 19, the pressure spring acts to return the 'throw rod 26 to its inactive position and the clamping member is therefore elevated, ready to be again actuated as before. It will be seen that, due to the connection upon the punch head operating lever l1 with the cam wheels, said lever is actuated at a. proper time to force the punch downwardly and through the work after such work has been clamped and subjected to pressure by the member 20.
In order that the pressure spring 27 may besusceptible of adjustment in a vertical direction to vary the position of its free end and cause it to impart different degrees of movement to the clamping member through the medium of -the connecting rod I mount said upon a ledge 30 supported by the frame of the machine, the spring resting upon a boss 31 at the upper side of the ledge and being held by adjustment bolts or screws 32 located at opposite sides of said boss. By loosening' these bolts or screws and tilting the spring upwardly or downwardly the degree of elevation of its free end may be varied at will. 1 In the modification illustrated in Fig. VI, the. throw rod 26 is under the influence of a spiral pressure spring 27 that is positioned between a pair of guides 30 and surrounds: an actuating rod 27'. united to the throw rod 26 by the links 28. The rod 27 has a collar 27 fixed to it above the lower guide 30 in order that the I pressure spring will be compressed when the rod 27. is moved upwardly While the throw rod is moving forwardly. Bythis means power is stored in the pres sure spring to cause it to operate in the desired manner upon the clamping member 20 through themedium of the throw rod.
Aside from the features in the modification whicl have been mentioned the construction corresponds to the machine as first described.
