Description

G. P. RIGGS.
GUN ATTACHMENT. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 2. 1909.
I Patented Apr. 19,1910.
GEORGE P. RIGGS, OF ST. MARYS, WEST VlIRGINIA/ GUN ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
Application filed August 2, 1909. Serial No. 510,895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. RIGGS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Marys, 'in the county of Pleasants and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Gun Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a gun attachment, and more particularly to that type of attachment commonly styled a silencer for preventing all explosion noise.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive silencer attachment that will not interfere with the balance, sighting, velocityv or accuracy of a gun to which the same is attached.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gun attachment that will reduce the recoil to a minimum, and that can be easily attached to and rempved from a gun, the attachment being of a small size to permit of the same being easily carried when not in use.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by a device that will be presently described in detail and then claimed.
Referrin to the drawing :-Figure 1 is an elevation 0% a gun provided with my attachn1ent,'Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the attachment partly broken away to more clearly show the interior construction of the same, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the attachment, Fig. 4 is a cross sectional- View of the same, and, Fig. 5 is a view of the rear end of the attachment. Q
In the drawings 1 denotes a cylindrical shell or casing having the forward end thereof closed by a circular plate 2, which isprovided with a small opening 3 adjacent to the upper edge thereof. The rear end of the shell or casing 1 is closed by a circular plate 4 and this plate adjacent to the up er edge thereof is providedwith a circu ar opening 5 of a greater diameter than the opening 3. The openings 3 and 5 aline and both are eccentric to the axis of the shell or casing. Fixed in the opening 5 is the forward end of a split or bifurcated sleeve 6 adapted to fit over the forward end-of .a gun barrels, said sleeve being held in engagement with the gun barrel by aclamp 7 having depending apertured parallel lugs 9 edges thereof.
which are drawn toward each other so as to clamp the sleeve 6 on the barrel 8 by a set screw 9 The clamp 7 is adapted to frictionally hold the sleeve in engagement with the barrel.
Within the shell or casing 1 in closer proximity to the rear end thereof than the front end are a plurality of disks 10 corresponding in diameter to the inner diameter of the shell or casing 1. Each disk is provided with a radially disposed slit or cut 11 extending from, the periphery to the axis of the disk and the slitted edges of each disk are bent outwardly or spread laterally, whereby when a plurality of disks are assembled the slitted edge of one disk will engage the slitted ed e of an adjoining disk. The slitted edges of the adjoining disks are riveted or otherwise secured together to form a spiral formation, not only in connection with the disks, but with the slitted This arrangement of the disks provides a spiral or sinuous passage for air, smoke or gases from the rear end of the shell or casing to the forward end thereof, and it is this retardation in the passage of gases that muflles the noise made by a detonation. Spacing pieces 12 are arranged between the disks to maintain said disks an equal distance apart.
To provide clearance for the bullet or projectile passage from the gun barrel 8,the disks 10 near the upper edges thereof are provided with longitudinally alining openings 13, said openings alining longitudinally with the small opening 3 at the forward end of the shell or casing and with the bore'of the gun barrel 8.
I have illustrated the shell or casing as having a plurality of disks occupying approximately 'one-third of the space within the shell or casing, and reserve the right to reduce the number of disks shown or to increase the same according to the caliber of the gun in connection with which the silencing attachment is used.
The attachment is made of light and durable metal finished to harmonize with the metallic parts of the gun.
Having now described my-invention, What I claim as new, is
1. A silencing attachment for fire arms, comprising a cylindrical shell, means carried by the inner end of the shell for clamping the same to a gun barrel at the end thereof llo eccentric to the gun barrel, a plurality of and the opening in the forward end of the slitted apertured disks arrangedwithin said shell.
shell and having the slitted edgesof each 3. Asilencing device for fire arms,compris- I disk spread laterally and secured to the ing a shell imperforate except in linewiththe slitted edges of adjacent disks to provide a bore of the barrel and eccentrically connect- 'sinuous passage for gases passing through ed to the barrel at the muzzle thereof, and
the shell, the apertures in said disks alining means for effecting dissipation of the energy.
to provide a passage for a bullet from the of gases following the discharge of a progun, the said apertures being eccentric to jectile through the shell said means comthe axes of the disks. prising a plurality of disks fitted within the 2. A silencing attachment for fire arms shell and each disk slitted from the pecomprising a shell adapted to be clamped riphery inwardly toward the axis thereof, upon a gun barrel and when in position lie the slitted edges of the disks being spread eccentric to the barrel, a plate closing the laterally from each other and secured to the .forward end of said shell and provided with slitted edges of adjacent disks whereby a an opening eccentric to the axis of the shell sinuous "passage is provided for the gases, and alining with the bore of the gun barrel, the disks being provided with-- alined openand a plurality of disks arranged within the ings which are concentric to the end openshell and secured together, each. disk slitted ings in the shell and eccentric to the axes of from the periphery thereof and having the the disks andaxis of the shell.
slitted edges spread apart and secured to In testimony whereof I affix my signature the slitted edgesof adjoining disks whereby in the presence of two witnesses.
the disks form a sinuous passage for gases passing through the shell, the disks being GEORGE provided with alining openings which are Witnesses: eccentric to the axes of the disks and shell F. K. SELLERS,
and concentric to the bore of the gun.barrel TYNDALL DINSMORE.
