Be it known that I, O'rro BERNZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Blow- Torches, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of the invention are to provide an attachment for holding a solderingiron, which can be quickly secured to the perforated ignition tube of a blow torch and can be conveniently discarded when not needed; to secure a firm and rigid seating upon the ignition tube without closing its perforations; to provide a simple and efficient construction which is strong, durable and inexpensive, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 illustrates in side elevation a torch having my improved soldering-iron holder, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the soldering-iron holder detached.
In said drawings, 1 indicates a blow torch comprising a reservoir 2 for gasolene and air, a burner 3 mounted on the top of the reservoir 2, and a pump at secured at the side of the same by means of braces 5, 6. The said burner 3 is provided with a valve 7, and at its opposite end with the usual perforated ignition tube 8.
Upon the ignition tube 8 I have shown my improved detachable soldering iron holder 9, which is preferably adapted to be stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal. Said holder comprises a narrow body portion 10 adapted to lie longitudinally on the tube 8 and having intermediate of its ends lateral projections or arms 11, 11 which are curved downimrdly to fit around the said tube 8. The ends 12, 12 of said arms are bent to lie parallel to each other, and perforated, as at 13, to receive a clamping bolt lat, having a nut 15, by which the solderingiron holder can be quickly and firmly secured to the ignition tube 8 of the torch or readily detached therefrom. At its opposite ends the body portion 9 has upwardly turned standards 16, 17 respectively, the forward one 16 of which provides a transverse crotch 18 at its upper end to receive the shank of the soldering-iron, the opening 19 at the top of the crotch permitting convenient insertion and removal of the soldering tool. The rear standard 17 is preferably higher than the forward one 16, and is recessed at one side, as at 20, to afford an upper undercut seat or keeper for the handle of the soldering-iron. The soldering-iron handle is readily inserted from the side into said recess 20, after its shank has been placed in the crotch 18, and being overbalanced on the crotch by the weight of the copper head or bit of the soldering-iron, said handle catches under the hooked top 21 of the laterally recessed standard 17 and is thus held at just the right angle to bring the head or bit in the flame of the torch.
The hooked top 21 is extended somewhat, beyond the bottom wall 22 of the recess 20, and slightly curved toward said bottom wall, so as to securely retain the soldering iron as its shank lies in the crotch 18.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a torch having a burner tube, of a solderingiron holder comprising a body portion lying longitudinally on said burner tube, lateral clamping arms extending downwardly from the opposite sides of said body portion and detachably engaging the burner tube, and upward extensions at the opposite ends of said body portions, the one at the forward end of the burner tube providing a low crotch and the one at the other end a higher lateral recess or seat.
2. As an article of manufacture, a soldering-iron holder for torches, comprising a single piece of sheet metal providing a long narrow body portion, arms projecting from the opposite edges of said body portion intermediate of its ends, means for clamping the ends of said arms together at one side of the body portion, and extensions bent at the ends of said body portion to projectat the opposite side thereof from said clamping means, said extensions providing higher and lower seats for a soldering-iron, respectively.
