UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT R. MILNER, OF CANAL DOVER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE A. B1. MILNER SEATING COMPANY, OF CANAL DOVER, OHIO, A CORPORATION.
SCHOOL SEAT AND DESK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT It. MILNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canal Dover, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School Seats and Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to school seats and desks, and more particularly to a combined structure of this character of simple and inexpensive construction, and my object is to provide an improved seat or desk for school and auditorium purposes, embodying a folding seat and a readily detachable desk mounted upon a single support.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, and form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined device. Fig. 2 is a similar view, illustrating the seat folded and the desk portion removed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view therethrough on the line 77 of Fig. 1, and partly broken away, and, Fig. 4: is a detailed horizontal sectional view, on an enlarged scale, through one of the desk connections.
As shown, I provide a circularly flanged supporting base 9, embodying an upright which is partly tubular to receive the central depending stem 8, of the casting 10, having upstanding spaced extension portions from the rear thereof, which are provided with side channels as shown. The casting 10 forms a support for the seat 6, pivotally secured upon the body portion thereof at 13,
'and also for the curved back rest 2, extending upwardly therefrom, against its extension piece. The desk portion comprises a horizontal top 11, a base 12, connected by side castings 1, having vertical ribs 1 formed upon their inner surfaces and adjacent one end thereof, and with slots 3 extending longitudinally of and through said ribs 1*. Bolts 4: threaded into openings in the extensions 5 of the main casting 10, are adapted to pass through the slots 3 of the desk side castings, to removably clamp the desk upon the extensions 5 by the engagement of ribs Specification of Letters Patent.

l in the channels of said extensions as shown in Fig. 4. Thus, by loosening bolts 4, the desk may be raised or lowered, or by withdrawing the same, the desk may be removed.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that my improved seat and desk is especially advantageous for use in school rooms, as the desks may be readily and easily removed to reconstruct the school room into a lecture room or auditorium.
It will be understood that the supports 9 are to be furnished in difierent heights, for the use of different sized children.
The ribs 1 of the side castings, and the sides of channels 5 of the supporting arms, are proportionately beveled to a rigid binding connection when the bolts 4 are tightened, and thus prevent the desk from working loose.
Having fully described my invention, I
' claim:
1. A device of the character described embodying a supporting standard, a casting mounted thereon having upstanding channeled arms, a seat pivotally mounted upon said casting to swing upwardly toward said arms, a curved back rest mounted forwardly of said arms, and a desk mounted upon and extending rearwardly from said arms and having ribs to interlock with the channels thereof.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a supporting standard, a casting mounted thereon, having upstanding channeled arms, the sides of the channels thereof being beveled, a seat pivotally mounted upon said casting to swing upwardly toward said arms, a curved back rest mounted forwardly of said arms, and a desk mounted upon, and extending rearwardly from, said channeled arms, and provided with beveled ribs to engage within the beveled channels thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT R. MILNER.
Witnesses:
JOHN A. BOMMHARDT, MONROE E. MILLER.
