SCHOOL DESK AND SEAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1 \To. 520,026, dated May 22, 1894.

To whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. AMMON, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School Desks and Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- 7 Figure 1, is a perspective view of the desk and seat. Figs. 2 and 3, are views showing the standards and their different parts separated from each other, with the back, seat, and desk removed. Fig. 4, is a side view of the standards, or one section of the standards.

The present invention has relation to school desks and seats, and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all of the figures of the drawlngs.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the leg or standard of the seat and desk,

which is formed in sections or pairs, and the sections united together by means of suitable clamping bolts or rivets, which clam ping bolts or rivets are passed through apertures formed in the flanges a. In the drawings each section of the standard proper is provided with four flanges; but it will be understood that a greater or less number can be used, as the only object designed to be accomplished by the flanges is to securely unite the sections composing the standard A together.

For the purpose of providing means for holding the back B, in proper position, the sections of the standard proper are extended upward, and curved outward from each other, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, which continuation forms the arms 0. The arms 0 are each provided with the groove 1), and when the sections are secured together, as illustrated in Fig. 1, a groove will be located upon each side, thereby providing two grooves, located opposite each other, which grooves are for the purpose of receiving the edges of the back to the extent of the height of the grooves.

The back B is extended above the top of the grooves 12, and the portion of the back so extended is securely attached to the desk sides D, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1.

The desk sides D are extended rearward as illustrated, and are so extended for the purpose of providing means for securely attaching the desk or table E.

For the purpose of providing means for holding the book shelf F in proper position, the ribs 0 are provided or if desired, grooves may take the place of the ribs, inasmuch as the same object can be accomplished with either construction. For the purpose of providing restsor supports, the flanges d are provided, which flanges are secured in any convenient and well known manner to the back B. The flanges d are each provided with the inclined ribs or projections 01, which ribs or projections are preferably formed integral with the flanges d.

It will be understood that by providing the rests or supports, they will form suitable rests, and supports for the shoulders of the their top or upper ends to the bottom or under side of the seat, and the lower ends attached to one of the flanges, or set of flanges a.

It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement, I am enabled to construct a school desk and seat that will be strong and durable, and at the same time provide a support for the seat and desk that will take up little room, and at the same time so locate the desk and seat support that it will not come in contact with the clothes of persons as they pass to and fro, or enter between two desks.

It will be understood that by providing the curved arms 0, and attaching the seat as described that the desk proper will be securely braced laterally.

For the purpose of providing a firm support for the standard A, the bottom or lower ends of the standard sections are flared as illustrated in the drawings, by which arrangement, the desk and seat is properly braced in all directions.

For the purpose of stiffening the upward and outwardly curved arms 0, the screws a, or their equivalents are properly seated into the edges of the back B, as illustrated in the dotted lines Fig. 1.

In Fig. 4, a side view of one section of the standard A together with its different parts is illustrated, and as shown, the standard or leg A is curved backward, which is so formed for the purpose of giving more room directly in front of the seat G, or in other words curving the standard so as to bring it out of the way of the occupant.

Another object and purpose of curving the 7 standard A, is to better balance the desk proper, as it will be understood that by so curving the standard the seat G will be brought more directly over the base B.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. The combination of the leg or standard A, formed in sections clamped together, the

upward and outward curved arms 0, formed integral with the standard sections and provided at their top or upper ends with the desk sides D, the grooves 1) formed in the arms 0, the back B, the seat G, and the desk or table, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of the post or standard A, formed in sections provided with the arms 0, the seat support e, secured to the top or upper end of one of the standard sections, the braces f, the back B, secured to the arms 0 and the desk sides E, and provided with the flanges at having the inclined ribs 0?, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination of the curved standard or leg A formed in sections, each section provided with the upwardly and outwardly curved arm 0, provided with the groove 1), the back B, the desk sides D having secured thereto the desk E, and the book shelf F, and the seat Gr, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
