Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Hon'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at IViesbaden, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Ruling Devices, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.

r)The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved device, whereby lines may be printed upon paper readily and uniformly to obviate the use of a pen for such purposes.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a length of wood of the general dimensions of an ordinary rule, and I provide upon the top face of the rule one or more ink pads of various colors. I provide inking straight edges, which preferably normally rest upon the ink pad surfaces, but which may be eX- tended therefrom by the user of the device, and brought down upon the paper at the point where it is desired to impress a` line. I preferably so construct the device that the inking edges will automatically be brought back upon the ink pad itself without action by the operator.

The scope of my invention will be pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a. plan view of my improved line marking device. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a modification of the device of Fig. l, adapted for the ruling of lines of two different colors.

As shown in Figs. l and 2, my device conof a base l, having an upstanding ridge l0, to which is pivoted a bracket 4. An ink pad of ordinary construction 2 is secured to the base l. The straight inking edge 5 depends at right angles from a slide 7 provided with an operating knob G, and is mounted to slide on the bracket et. A spring 9 is provided to retract the edge to its innermost position, where it will lie upon the inking pad Q, and thus be at all times inked. It will be noted that the slides and bracket-s are of different lengths in the examples shown, thus permitting the operator to se- 1 l l l lect one of the approximate length desired to impress the same upon the paper.

In the device of Fig. 2, the ink pad 2 may be of one color, say red, while the ink pad 1Q, may be of a different color, purple for eX- ample. This device, as will be seen upon inspection of the drawings, is merely a duplicate of the device of Fig. l, the common ridge l() being used to pivot the brackets and slides on the opposite sides of the device.

In carrying out this invention, details of construction may be varied from those shown, and yet the essence of the invention be retained; some parts might be employed without others, and new features thereof might be combined with elements old in the art in diverse ways, although the herein ded scribed type is regarded as embodying substantial improvements over such modiiications.

As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely dierent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is furthermore desired to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.

I claim as my invention:

1. The herein described line ruling device, comprising a base, an ink pad, a long thin ruling edge adapted to be depressed upon the ink pad, and means to permit said ruling edge to be extended away from the pad, said edge being depressible upon paper in a plane with the bottom of the device.

2. The herein described line ruling device, comprising a base, an ink pad thereon, a pivoted bracket carrying av movable slide, said slide carrying a long thin inking edge, said inking edge being movable away from be produced on the depression of such adjoining edges.
