Description

Sq CLINE.
' BOXING GLOVE. APPLIGATIGN FILED JULY 14,1909.
Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
W/INESSES SAMUEL CLINE,
0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO GEORGE A. REACH,
OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOXING-GLOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 19, 1910.
Application led July 14, 1909. Serial No. 507,522.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL CLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxing-Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxing-gloves; and the object thereof is to provide an elastic truss within gloves of said class adapted to exert a tension upon the hand when the glove is properly laced thereon and yieldingly support and reinforce the bones and knuckles thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide an elastic band forming a loop within a boxing-glove having its ends secured upon the palm portion thereof on opposite sides of the laced opening, by which its tension on the hand may be adjusted.
'Io these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective view thereof; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the padded back portion of the glove of ordinary construction, and having the usual thumb-stall 2.
3 indicates the palm or inner portion of the glove, which is suitably stitched to the back portion, having a longitudinal vent 4L extending from the wrist, the adjacent edges of which are provided with suitable eyelets 5 and a lacing cord for securing the glove upon the hand. In the form of glove shown in the drawings, the palm thereof is provided with a grip 6 for grasping in the hands of the wearer.
For the purpose of yieldingly supporting or reinforcing the hand, I provide an elastic truss 7 within the glove, preferably comprising a band 8 of elastic webbing forming a loop over the back of the hand, having its opposite ends stitched or otherwise suitably secured upon the inner face of the palm portion 3 on the adjacent edges of the laced vent 4: at 9 and 10. Intermediate of its ends, said band 8 may be stitched or caught to the vlining of the padded back portion 1 o f the glove at 11 to hold it in proper position.
It will be apparent that when the lacings of the vent A are released, the hand may be readily inserted in the glove and truss, and that when the lacings are tightened and secured, the truss 7 is stretched around the back and sides of the hand exerting a yielding, but constant, pressure and support thereon, and it will be appreciated that the degree of tension of the truss may be adjusted and regulated by adjusting the proximity of the adjacent edges of the vent by adjusting the lacing-cord.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a boxingglove, the combination with a padded back portion and a palm portion,'of a truss secured therein adapted to embrace and support the hand, substantially as described.
2. In a boxing glove, the combination with a padded back portion and a palm portion, of an adjustable truss secured therein adapted to embrace and support the hand, substantially as described.
3. In a boxingglove, the combination with the padded back portion and palm portion, of an elastic band secured therein adapted to embrace and support the hand, substantially as described.
l. In a boxing glove, the combination with a padded back portion and a palm portion having a laced longitudinal opening adapted to be drawn together, of an elastic band having its opposite ends secured upon the adjacent edges of the opening and attached intermediate of its ends to the said back portion, adapted to embrace and support the hand, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL CLINE.
