Definitions
- This invention relates to toys and particularly hoops provided with a frame located within same which is adapted to move independently of the hoop and maintain an upright position to carry ornaments or for other purposes as will be more fully described in the following specication, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings accompanying this application in which:
- Figure l is a side elevation of our improved hoop.
- Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of same.
- a frame which comprises a vertical arm and two downwardly inclined arms, the inner ends of the said arms being pivotally connected together at a point at or about the center of the hoop.
- Each of the said arms comprises a pair of pieces which are disposed on opposite sides and project beyond the periphery of the hoop.
- the pieces 6 of the vertical arm have their upper ends connected together by a block l0 which spaces them appropriately apart and is disposed above the hoop and provided with a vertical socket for the reception of the lower end of a flag staff 1l or other ornamental device.
- rollers 13 which are mounted on suitable pivots 12, said rollers being on the inner side of the hoop.
- the inner ends of the arms of the frame are pivotally connected together by a bolt 9 which admits of the angular adjustment of the lower downwardly inclined arms with respect to each other and the vertical arm so that the rollers carried by the said arms 7 and 8 may be adjusted toward or from each other, to the end that the frame may be applied to hoops of dierent sizes.
- the downwardly inclined arms with their rollers are disposed below the center of the hoop so that the weight of the frame is applied to the hoop at a point below the center thereof and, hence, an equilibrium of the hoop is maintained when the hoop is being rolled.
- the rollers reduce friction and owing to the fact that the side bases of the arms of the frame are on opposite sides of the hoop, the frame is prevented from becoming casually detached from the hoop.
- a frame having a vertical upper' arm and a pair of diverging downwardly extending lower arms, each of said arms comprising a pair of pieces disposed on opposite sides and projecting beyond the periphery of the hoop, each of said downwardly extending lower arms having a roller mounted between its pieces and bearing against the inner side of the hoop, said vertical arm having a block secured between its pieces and disposed without the hoop and a bolt pivotally connecting the pieces of the said arms together at the inner ends for angular adjustment of the lower arms with respect to each other and said vertical arm for the purposes set forth.

A TTOHNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY G. STARIVIER AND WILLIAM TAPIO, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1,2, 1910.
Application filed September 1, 1908. Serial No. 451,188.
T o all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY G. STARMER and W'ILLIAM TArro, citizens of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and particularly hoops provided with a frame located within same which is adapted to move independently of the hoop and maintain an upright position to carry ornaments or for other purposes as will be more fully described in the following specication, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings accompanying this application in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of our improved hoop. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of same.
In accordance with this invention, we combine with a hoop 5, a frame which comprises a vertical arm and two downwardly inclined arms, the inner ends of the said arms being pivotally connected together at a point at or about the center of the hoop. Each of the said arms comprises a pair of pieces which are disposed on opposite sides and project beyond the periphery of the hoop. The pieces 6 of the vertical arm have their upper ends connected together by a block l0 which spaces them appropriately apart and is disposed above the hoop and provided with a vertical socket for the reception of the lower end of a flag staff 1l or other ornamental device. Between the pieces 7 and S of the downwardly inclined arms are rollers 13 which are mounted on suitable pivots 12, said rollers being on the inner side of the hoop. The inner ends of the arms of the frame are pivotally connected together by a bolt 9 which admits of the angular adjustment of the lower downwardly inclined arms with respect to each other and the vertical arm so that the rollers carried by the said arms 7 and 8 may be adjusted toward or from each other, to the end that the frame may be applied to hoops of dierent sizes. Furthermore, it will be observed upon reference to the drawings that the downwardly inclined arms with their rollers are disposed below the center of the hoop so that the weight of the frame is applied to the hoop at a point below the center thereof and, hence, an equilibrium of the hoop is maintained when the hoop is being rolled. The rollers reduce friction and owing to the fact that the side bases of the arms of the frame are on opposite sides of the hoop, the frame is prevented from becoming casually detached from the hoop.
`What we claim as new and desire to se! cure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a hoop, a frame having a vertical upper' arm and a pair of diverging downwardly extending lower arms, each of said arms comprising a pair of pieces disposed on opposite sides and projecting beyond the periphery of the hoop, each of said downwardly extending lower arms having a roller mounted between its pieces and bearing against the inner side of the hoop, said vertical arm having a block secured between its pieces and disposed without the hoop and a bolt pivotally connecting the pieces of the said arms together at the inner ends for angular adjustment of the lower arms with respect to each other and said vertical arm for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof, we afiiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
