CLAES WlLIAM BCMAN, OF NEXV YGRK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO EAGLE PENCIL COMPANY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOUNTAIN PEN.
Application led September 9, 1909.
To nl. wilma-z. if Imay concern:
lle it known that l, @mns lll. lonAN, of the city. county, and State of New York, have invented a nenand useful lmprovement in ltountain-llens. oi which the following is a specification.
)lv invention relates to that class of fountain pens in which the nih-carrying bar is movable in, and lengthwise of. the tubular case or handle. so that it ma)v he projected from and retracted within the case: and is combined with a hand-actuated 4movement usually ot the proand re-pelling kindwhereby it may be thus moved.
lt is the'object ot my invention to produc(- an elicient. strouj`` and durable fountain pen ol this kind. ha vingf a movement. fairly n'ell housed within the removable section or' the handle in ivhich it is held, and having its parts so combined as to be convenientljY fitted together and applied to the handle section, together with Which they, as
a whole, may he tilted to or removed from the main portion of the handle.
l will lirs deserihe nilv improvement in r'i'lnnectim't with the aeconuianving drawings formingA part of this sperilicatimi, and will then more particularliv pointy out in thev claim those features- \vhi1-h l believe to he new and ot my own invention.
ln said dra\\"i1gs-Figure l is au axial section ot a fountain pen embodying nl v invention in its preferred form. the parts being' in the positimrivhicli the)v occupy when the pen is retracted, and the nozzle end of the handle is closed by the cap. Fig. Q is a like section with the parts in the position the)v assume when the pen is protruded in position for writing. and the cap is upon the rear end of the handle. Fig, 3 is a perspective vien' ot the movement, its operating knob or head, and the rear handlesection, tluse parts being,r detached from one another, and the extreme rear end of the f lmndle-seelion being broken away to show the packing arrangement Within.
is the main or hody portion of the hanrllef provided `vitli the usual contracted nozzle havinp a flaring end a and an external screw thread a.
l) is the rear handle-section, which car ries the move1nent, provided with an externall)Y sieren' threaded front. end to screw into the, correspondingly internally screw threaded rear end ot' the handle. body A.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1910.
Serial No. 516,835.
C is the cap, provided with a plug or stopper e, which closes the nozzle eno of the handle, when the cap is applied to that end, and which also is provided with an internal screw thread o to engage either the threaded part aof the nozzle (when the cap is applied to that. end, as seen in Fig. l), or the threaded knob or head F (hereinafter more full;v described) of the movement, when applied to the other end of the handle, as seen in Fig. 2.
Thus far there is nothing essentiall7 new in the pen.
D is the screw rod, and ll is the rofl-in closing,l barrel, of the movement. The said rod has the external screw-thread, shown at d; and the barrel has an internally projectiir;r pin a to enter and engage the thread in the rod, as usual in a proand repelling movement ol this general kind.
Only one pin c is shown in the drawing, but, as usual in this kind of a pen, two can be employed if preferred.
The front end of the barrel is closed, and to it is fixed the stein f of the nib carrying bar F.
l prefer to make all of the parts D, E, F, f, ot". vulcanite or hard ruhber. The screw thread l is euty into the body of' the cylindrical rod l), which latter lits. and can move snloothly, in the barrel E.
l`he barrel l", which is cylindrical, lits and can lnoove smoothlyr in the rear handle section l. ltis provided upon its exterior and near its rear end. with two diametrically opposite longitudinal narrow and short ribs c which enter correspondingI internal longitudinal grooves 7) formed in the handle section B.
Then the parts are in position in the handle, rotar f movement ol the screw D will cause longitudinal movement of the barrel E and parts carried by the same, as will be understood without. further explanation.
lvpon the. shank ot the rod D, hack of the screw thread (Z, is an annular flange d', which brings up againsty an annular shoulder in the rear part of the handle section B. The. shank of the serev rod projects to the rear beyond this shoulder ZX, through the handle section and has a screw threaded rear end on which is screwed, and fastened tightly, the extcrnall'i7 screw threaded plug, or operating head, F. The annular space within the handle section B around the rear portion of the shank ot' the screw, is fitted with annular 'ashers or packingY rings g of cork or other suitable material, whiclnwhen the plug F is screwed home, will be compressed between the shoulder b and the plug F. and around the serew shank, so as to form an ink tight joint at thel rear end of the liandle, while permitting;r the free revolution of the screw rod D. Under this arrangementit will be noted thatI the sereT D is in effect housed in a barrel Closed at every point exeept the rear, and that the barrel in turn is housed in the handle seetion Ii, from which only its elosed front portion at ang time protrades.
This arrangement is simple, etl'eetg ive to prevent cloggingr of the movement, and
has much structural strength.
\\"hen the eap C is serened onto the plug F, as in Fig. 9, it can of course be used to rotate the plug. as customary in fountain pens 0l this feneral kind.
The ink feeder, nib carrying` bar ete. which have to do with the Writing' instrunientalities proper4` may be of any suitable known Construction; they form no part of my present invention.
Haring described my improvement and the best Way now known to me of carrying the same into etl'eet,l state in conclusion that l. do not limit in i'selt' narrowl)Y to the sperifie structural details hereinbefore set forth since manifestly they can be varied in some partieulars without departure from my invention; butI vWhat l Claim herein as neu' and desire. to secure by Letters lateutis as follows:
In combination with the main body of the, handle. the rear hardle section detaehabliY connected therewith a eyliudriral barrel with closed sides and front end litting' and housed in the rear handle section. and Capable of longitudinal n'ioveinent only therein, a nih- Carrying bar attached to the closed front end of the barrel, a sex-eu' roll titiirr;r and housed in the barrel and sniveletl in the rear handle section so as Lo be capable of rotary motion onljyY therein, and a pin in the barrel n'hieh engages the serew thread in said rod, substantially as and for the, purposes hei-einbefore set forth.
In testinion)Y whereof l allx my signature in presenee ot' two witnesses.
