Application filed.'.E'ebruary 23, 1906- $erial lie. 302,4:fi1. v
To all whom it maycouaerm Be it'known that I, R, 'C NKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Filling Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
Tnis invention relates to fountain-pens;
' and'its object is to improve the construction of thatclas's of fountain-pens known as selffillin 'such, for example, as the pen covered y my prior patent, No. 685,258, dated In that, en the ink-reservoir consist-sofa slender ru -ber bag inclosed in a rigid'barrel or holder and communicating at one end with the pen-section. A presser bar is laid along one side of the bag between a rib on the bar projects out through a slot in the barrel. A lockin -ring passes through a slot in the rib.
he present invention consists in a new locking device for the I'GSSQT-bfll. It comprises 'a non-'rotatab e member slidable engthwiseon the barrel or holder and means for positively effecting the longitudinal movement of said sliding member to cause it to approach or recede'from the rib on. the presser-barl Bylocating the slidable memer close to one end of said rib it will when moved in one direction clamp the rib tightlybetween its adjacent edgeand the oppositeend of the slot in the barrel through which the rib rojects. ber isshdin the opposite direction, it will release the rib and leave the presser-bar free to be pushed in to' collapse the rubber bag or ink-"reservoir.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a perspective view of a pen embodying my. invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig). 4 is a perspective view of the slidable mem er and the nut for operating it. The hollow handle'or barrel 1 is of may ru flexible bag or ink-resber. It jincloses the The presser-bar ervoir 2, ofelastic rubber. 3 lies along one side of the reservoir and 1s provided with a projection or rib 4, which rojects through a longitudinal slot 5 in the barrel. The ends of the rib are referably undercut, as shown. Adjacent to one endof the rib is the sliding locking memher, which is preferably a sleeve 6 concentric Specification of Letters Patent. 1 i
."Wlll thereby the slot 5 in the barrel, so that the rib cannot f -vided f The preferred 10, meshing with portion of the When themovable mem V sliding member, preferably lengthwise Patented Nov. 20,1906.
with and fitting the outside be the barrel, which ispreferably reduced in diameter fora portion of its length to receive the sleeve without unduly enlarging the diameter of the en. The outer diameter of the sleeveis the same as that of the barrel forward of the rib, so that the cap 7 willvfit equally wellon each end of the penholder.
\Vhether made in the'formof a sleeve or not, the slidable locking member is provided with a. longitudinal slot 8, so 'that it can straddletherib 4 and be guided thereby in its longitudinal movement on the barrel. It will be seen that this slot is of such a length that when the lock ng member is slidtoward "the rib the end of the slot will engage with the end of the rib before the end of the sliding member strikes the shoulder 9, where the reduced portion of thebarrehtermin'ates, and force the rib. against the end of then be ushed in to collapse the ink-reservoir. T 1e undercutting of the ends of the rib insures a firm locking of these arts, which will be maintained until the siding lo'cking memberis retract-ed. Suitable means for efiectin a positive movement of the sliding memier are prodevice consists ota nut screw-threads on a reduced barrel, such as the neck 11, projecting centrally from the end of the barrel. The nut is suitably engaged with the A by groovingthe. nut at 12 to receive a pro ect1on on the said member. In the case of the sleeve shown this projection takes the shape of an internal flange 13, and in order to enable the nutto be engaged therewith it is provided with slits 14, thereby forming sections which can be sprung together and forced into the sleeve until the flange engages the groove and the sections spring outwardly, sothat the flange 13 is engaged by the flange 15 at the end of the-sections. The nut is thus free to rotate in the sleeve with. no danger of separation therefrom, and as the nut travels back and forth on the screw-threaded portion of the barrel'itcauses the sleeve to move lengthwise on the barrel without rotating, merely sliding to and fro into and out of engagement with the rib 4.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim is- 1. A fountainpen,provided with a hollow vbar ,having a rib'proj eating thrmigh'said slot,
