Be it known that I, HERMANN MADEHEIM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification. Y

Most of the fountain-pens heretofore in use could be carried only with some inconvenience in the pocket, and were consequently liable to get broken on account of their great length, while the shorter fountain-pens were not so convenient in writing.

The object of this invention is to furnish a fountain-pen which can be carried conveniently in the pocket when not required forV use, and which can be extended to the proper length whenused for writing; and the invention consists of an extension handlesection which is guidedin an annular space between the ink-fountain andaflXedeXteriorhandle-section. The'inlcfountain is provided with stopshoulders at both ends, against which a stop at the inner end ofthe sliding extension-section abuts when arriving at either shoulder. The ink-fountain is filled through a valved spout by a piston, the hollow piston-rod of which is extended by a detachable section that screws into a socket at the outer end of the pistonrod, as will more fully appear hereinafter.

, To the threaded portion a an exterior tubular main handle-section, B, is screwed, which is equal in length with the ink tube or fountain A. A sliding tubular extension, B', ofthe handle B is guided. by a shoulder, b, -at its inner end in the annular space between theink-fountain A and thefiXed handle-section B. The

shoulder b of the extension-handle B abuts against the shoulder c* of the ink fountain when the extension-handle is drawn out to its full extent, or against the shoulder a when it is pushed in, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively. The extension-handle B can thus be moved forward or back, but cannot be withdrawn from the spacebetween the ink-fountain and the fixed handle-section. The upper end of the extension-handle B is provided with a screw -thread and with a hollow detachable cap, D. 1

At the interior of the ink-fountain A a tightly-fitting piston, e, is arranged, which is provided with a hollow piston-rod, e', having an interior screw-thread at its outer end. The piston e, on being drawn back by its rod,'abuts against an interior stop-shoulder, c3, of the rear end of the ink-fountain. A detachable eXtension, e2, of the piston-rode' screws by its threaded end into the screw-socket at the end of the piston-rod e until a shoulder, e3, of the extension e? abuts against the piston-rod. When ink is to be drawn into the ink-fountain'throughthe dischargespout, the extension-piston e2 is screwed into the socket of the hollow pistonrod e', as shown in Fig. 3. rIhe spoutA is placed into the ink-fountain, and the piston `then drawn back, so that its suction iills the ink-fountain with ink. The eX- tension e? of the piston-rod e is then unscrewed and stored away in inverted position in the A hollow piston-rod e', so as to be out of the way of the telescoping extension-handle when the same is pushed into the main section of the handle, as shown in Fig. 2.
