Description
B. BRODOWSKI. ATTACHMENT FOR ELEVATORS T0 INDICATE ALINEMENT 0I FLOORS.
APPLIOATION FILED DEC. 23, 1909.

Mil 4071? IBOLESLOW BRODOWSKI, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR ELEVATORS TO INDICATE ALINEMENT OF FLOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 5, 1910.
Application filed December 23, 1909. Serial No. 534,632.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BOLESLOW BRODOWSKI, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing in Philadel hia, in the county of Philadelphia and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Elevators to Indicate Alinement of Floors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said improvements, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The herein described device relates to an attachment for elevators whereby the alinement of the floor of an elevator car with the floor of a room or landing can be seen at a glance by the occupants of the car as well as the operator, owing to the fact that'the device is on a plane with the eyes of the operator of the elevator car.
It is a known fact that operators of elevators are often required, after having reached a floor of a building, to extend one of their feet over the sill of the car to ascertain if the floor of the elevator is plumb, or in alinement with the landin floor so that passengers may enter or ma e an exit without tri ping over any undue height of either the oor of a room or of the elevator. By the placing of the foot upon the two floors the o erator assumes considerable risk, and is in anger of accidents, and, also, if the car is not lumb with the room floor, is required to raise or lower the car in intermittent or spasmodic jerks, which not only is of an injurious nature to the mechanism of the elevator, but also annoying to the passengers of the car. It is also known that the operator is to one side of the car, and when the latter is crowded, the operator is very often unable to see the floors, so that, when a car is approaching a floor, the operator can by keeplng his eyes on the pointer on the front inside frame of the car, readily and immediately stop the car when the twin pointers are dlrectl opposite one to the other. Passengers a so are required to first look at the sill or floor of a car to ascertain whether they shall have to step up or down in leaving or entering a car, and women are in danger of having their dresses torn when the oors are not in alinement.
The device, therefore, has for an object to prov de means to positively point and show alinement between the floor of an elevator and the floor of a room or landing.
A further object lies in the fact that the device is readily, easily and cheaply made of metal or like material and attached in the proper positions, and to be of such assistance to a person running an elevator as to obviate all jerky stopping of cars.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the specifications that follow, in which the novel features, construction and arrangement will be brought out, described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawin s which form part of this specification, an in which similar numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view partly in section, showing the pointers in position, with door partially open. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of one of the pointers. Fig. 3 is a detail View partly in section of one of the methods of attaching the pointer.
To more fully describe the drawings, and to make clear the operation and purpose of the herein described device :The numeral 1 indicates the floor of an elevator car; 2 the floor of a landing or room; 3 a pointer attached to the sliding door between the elevator car floor and the landin floor; 4 a pointer secured to the front inslde frame of the elevator car; 5 a support or part of a room or a landin running from the floor to the ceiling; 6 a s iding screen door between the elevator car floor and the landing floor; 7 one of the methods of attaching pointers by screws or other means; 8 a clamp for securin one of the pointers to the screen or like oors when the ointers cannot be secured or fastened in any other manner.
The method of adjustment and use of my herein described improvement is as follows: The elevator car floor 1 is brought to a level with the floor or landing of a room, 2, a pointer 4 is then attached to the front frame of the elevator car by either riveting or screwing to said frame; the pointer 3 is then secured to the door 6 of the elevator shaft, if a screenv door by means of a clamp engaging with the screen and pressing the pointer 3 firmly against said screen, if of other con struction and material, by screwing or any other well known securing means.
In use, when the elevator car is approaching a floor the operator can, owing to the fact that both pointers come to a level with the eyes, stop the elevator car when both pointers are directly opposite one to the other, instead of first opening the door and then placing a foot on the two floors 1 and 2 to ascertain if they are on a level, during which time a passen er is liable to start from an elevator car, an, the operator not being satisfied with the uneven position of the two floors, either raises or lowers the car, and the exiting passenger is liable to trip or be thrown, which might result in serious injury,
By the use of my herein described invention the door of an elevator need not be opened until the operator is satisfied that the floors are level, thus assuring safety to himself, the passengers and the mechanism of the elevator.
Many minor changes may be made in the precise details and exact arrangement of the various parts of my invention" herein illustrated, and I do not intend to be in any Way restricted to these specific embodiments of the invention as herein given, the same being presented merely for illustrative purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. In a device of the character specified in combination with the door of an e evator pointer on the elevator shaft door, said' pointers adapted to come in alinement one with the other, and the means for removable attachment of said Vointers, one to the door of said elevator sha t, the other to the aforesaid frame of the elevator car, as herein de scribed and shown.
2. In a device of the character described in combination with an elevator car and a shaft door spaced therefrom, twin pointers composed of metal or likesubstance facing in opposite directions one of which is maintained on said shaft door and the other on the aforesaid side of the elevator car in position at ri ht angles to said vshaJft door and the side rame affording a relativel Y static-nary pointer and a polnter movab e with the aforementioned elevator car, substantially as set forth and shown in the drawings.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BOLESLQW BRODOWSKI.
