J. A. SAXON. BANK PROTECTOR.
No. 448,547. Patented Mar. 1'7, 1891.
'r' n 1 er 4 F, l H M NITED STATES PATENT Orrrcs.
JAMES A. SAXON, OF LEONARD, TEXAS.
BAN K-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,547, dated March 17, 1891.
Application filed July 1,1890. Serial No. 357,427. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be 1t known that I, JAMES A. SAXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leonard,
' door and a window provided each with my protector. Fig. 2 illustrates in detail the trigger. My invention consists in providing doors, windows, and other openings with suitable metallic shields that may be readily placed in position by a slight movement of the hand or foot of the operator.
Referring to the several parts of my invention by letter, Z is the trigger, which consists of the horizontal arm'A, from the inner end of which depends the vertical arm a, the point of junction of which is provided with the hole or bearing-seat a, adapted to receive the axle I), placed transversely in the projecting lugs B, which are secured to the casing or support 0. To the lower end of the arm a is pivotally secured the bolt D, which is arranged to reach through the casing O to engage the metallic shield or protector E, as will be hereinafter referred to. The door or window to be provided with my protector has secured to each side thereof the guides F, and
0 indicates the supporting-piece, which is arranged as shown. The guides F are adapted to receive the protector or shield to permit the same to work up and down above and over the window or door or other opening. The arm A is held normally in a horizontal position by the spring G, one end of which is secured to the outer end of the arm A, while the other end is left free to play up and down in the guide H, secured to the surface of the support 0. The trigger is actuated or controlled by means of the rope I, secured to the outer end of the armAand arranged to reach upward through the pulley-block J and thence downward to a point convenient and within the control of the operator.
In operation the shield is raised above the window or door to be protected until the bolt D passes under the lower edge thereof, and thus secured in position above the window or door, and when it is desired to lower the shield or protector over the window or other opening all that is necessary to be done is for the operator to give a downward pull upon the rope, which passes through the pulleys and is secured to the trigger, when the bolt will be withdrawn and the shield will drop by its own weight into position over the door or window. It will be understood that two or more triggers may be used upon the same shield or protector, if desired. The free end of the rope adaped to actuate the trigger may be secured to a suitable pedal or lever that may be operated by the foot.
The use of my invention will be appreciated by bankers and others who are desirous to guard against the depredations of robbers;
and it will be readily understood that when such marauders enter with the intention of robbing the bank or other building provided with my protector all that is necessary to be done is for the attendant or attendants of the bank to give a downward pull upon the rope connected to the trigger, when the shield will automatically drop into place over the door or other opening. The several ropes actuating the triggers maybe so connected that they will terminate in one rope, so that a single pull thereon will act upon all the shields simultaneously and inclose all the openings.
Believing that the advantages and operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, further reference thereto is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a bank-protector, the combination of the guides, the shield mounted therein and adapted to have avertical movement, the triggerarranged to hold saidshield normally above the opening and arranged to drop the same in place over the opening, the spring connected to the arm of the trigger and arranged to hold the same in a horizontal position and thus force the bolt inward and under the shield, the pulley J, and the rope secured therein, substantially as set forth.
2. A bank-protector eonsistingof the guides, the shield mounted therein, the trigger eonsistingof the arm A, provided with an arm a, the latter having pivotally secured at its lower end the bolt arranged to hold the shield in the position above the opening, and the rope connected to the arm and passing through the pulley and adapted to actuate the trigio ger, substantially as described, and for the purpose named.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
