To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM H. FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des lWloines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Sliding-Door Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction for an automatic lock adapted to be employed with a sliding door.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation illustrating a portion of a railway car, a sliding door thereon, and my improved lock mounted as required for practical use, the dotted lines indicating open position of the door and one member of the lock thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan of the lock detached from the door and wall. Fig. 3 is a front view of the lock, partly in section. In Fig. 2 the dotted lines indicate open positions of engaging hooks and operating arms. Fig. 4 is a front view of the lock in closed position on a door and support or wall. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are on an enlarged scale relative to Fig. 1.
In the construction and mounting of the lock as shown the numeral 10 designates a wall formed with a doorway or opening and provided with a door 12 slidingly mounted on and arranged for reciprocation horizontally of the wall and across said doorway. My improved lock is formed of two general members, one of them adapted to be mounted on the wall 10 and the other adapted to be mounted on the door 12 and coact or interengage with the member on the wall. The member on the door is constructed with a casing or housing 7) formed with lateral extensions or ears 0. The lateral extensions or ears 0 are formed with square openings (Z adapted to admit carriage bolts 6. The carriage bolts 6 extend through the door 12 and are provided with nuts (not shown) on their inner ends. The purpose of making the holes (Z square and using carriage bolts in them is to prevent improper removal of the bolts from the exterior of the car or other room to be closed by the door 12. A lug or plate (1 is formed on and extends across one face of the casing or housing I) and is spaced from the upper and lower Specification of Letters Patent.

The latches 9 project outside of the housing or casing and are formed with hooks directed toward each other. The extremities of the latches g are formed with curved faces converging toward the spaces between the hooks thereon. The outer end portions of the latches 9 also are formed with outwardly extending loops, eyes or apertured ears 7', 3' adapted to admit a sealing wire j to seal and connect said latches. The other member of the lock is constructed with a plate 0 formed with square holes cl adapted to admit carriage bolts 6 to secure the plate to the wall 10. A lug f, preferably triangular in vertical section, is formed on and extends outwardly from the central portion of the plate a and a flange or ear f is formed on and extends rearwardly from the outer end of said lug. The flange or ear f is spaced from the plate 0. Operating arms 72, are located between the ear or flange f and the plate 0 and are pivoted 011 studs h on said plate. Forward end portions of the operating arms h extend toward the upper and lower margins of the lug f and rear end portions of said operating arms extend rearwardly from the plate 0.
In practical use the members of the lock are mounted as shown. Vhen the door 12 is closed it carries the member thereon toward and into contact with the member on the wall 10, and in such movement the outer ends of the latches g engage the triangular lug f and ride over and under said lug. The triangular shape of the lug f acting upon the curved faces of the forward ends of the latches separates said latches against resilience of the spring 2' and when the hooks of the latches have passed beyond said lug the spring 1' draws the latches together in hooking relations with said lug. The latches g, in passing over and under the lug f, engage the forward end portions of the operating arms h and remain in contact therewith while in looking posit-ion. The latches may lug, said latches adapted to embrace and be sealed together by the sealing wire j in looking position. lVhen it is desired to release the lock and separate the members thereof, the operating arms it are manually oscillated into the positions shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. Such movement of the operating arms 71 causes the forward ends of said arms to separate the latches g sufficiently that such latches may be moved, with the casing b and door 12, away from the triangular lug 7' Assuming a freight car to be equipped with this look, in the event that the door is left open, any shunting or handling of the car may move the door into closed position, at which time the latches 9 would automatically engage the lug f and hold the door in closed position until the latches are manually released.
I claim as my invention 1. A look for sliding doors, comprising two members, one of the members adapted to be mounted on a suitable support, and
the other member adapted to be mounted on a door, the support member formed with a lug, and operating arms pivoted adjacent to said lug, the door member formed with a casing, hook latches pivoted in said casing and adapted to engage the lug on the support member at times, and yielding pressure devices connectmg said latches within the casing.
2. A look comprising a casing, springconnected hook latches pivoted within and extending outside said casing, a plate, a lug on said plate adapted to be engaged by said hook latches, and operating arms on said plate adapted for manual actuation to separate said hook latches.

A look for sliding doors, comprising two members, one of the members adapted to be mounted on a suitable support and formed wit-h a lug having an apex directed toward the other member and also formed with a flange extending rearwardly beyond said lug, operating arms pivoted on said flange, spaced apart and directed toward said lug, the other member adapted to be mounted on a door and formed with a housing having openings in one end directed toward the first member and formed with a plate between said openings adapted tobe engaged by said lug, hook latches pivoted within the housing and extending through i said openings, the outer ends of said hook latches formed with diverging surfaces adapted to engage and be separated by sald engage side margins of said lug, and a retractile spring connecting said hook latches within said housing.

A look for sliding doors, comprising two members, one of the members adapted to be mounted on a suitable support and formed with a lug having an apex directed toward the other member and also formed with a flange extending rearwardly beyond said lug, operating arms pivoted on said flange, spaced apart and directed toward said lug, the inner end portions of said operating arms being attenuated and the outer end portions of said operating arms being turned in opposite directions, the other member adapted to be mounted on a door and formed with a housing having openings in one end directed toward the first member and formed with a plate between said openings adapted to be engaged by said lug, hook latches pivoted within the housing and extending through said openings, the outer ends of said hook latches formed with diverging surfaces adapted to engage and be separated by said lug, said latches adapted to embrace and engage side margins of said lug, said latches also adapted to engage the attenuated end portions of the operating arms, and a retractile spring connecting said hook latches within said housing.
5. A look for sliding doors, comprising two members, one of the members adapted to be mounted on a suitable support and formed with a lug having an apex directed toward the other member and also formed with a flange extending rearwardly beyond said lug, operating arms pivoted on said flange, spaced apart and directed toward said lug, the other member adapted to be mounted on a door and formed with a housing having openings in one end directed toward the first member and formed with a plate between said openings adapted to be engaged by said lug, hook latches pivoted within the housing and extending through said openings, the outer ends of said hook latches formed with diverging surfaces adapted to engage and be separated by said lug, said latches adapted to embrace and engage side margins of said lug, integral loops on the outer end portions of and projecting forwardly from said hook latches and adapted to receive a sealing wire.
