GATE-LATCH.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAWRENCE Gosenovn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Villard, in the county of Pope, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to automatic door and gate fasteners or latches, and has for its object to provide a catch or latch that will have novel features of construction, will be simple in operation and will afford a religblie and convenient device of the type speci- More especially, however, the invention consists in the provision of a catch lying in the path of a spiral formed cam on the interior of the door and operated by the same.

lVith the above and other ends in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described, specifically claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, A represents, in a general manner, the door or gate, and B the jamb or gate post. Reposing in an opening 5 in the gate or door post is a pivoted shaft 6 bent at the outer end to form an arm or latch 7, which in its normal or operative position rests so as to engage and fasten the gate. At the inner end of said shaft is a handle or arm 8 adapted to raise and lower the catch 7 from the interior. On the inside of the door is a spiral formed cam 9, which extends from the interior of said door to the exterior and forms handles 12 on both sides. This cam lies in the path of the latch 7 and is adapted to engage with and raise the same from its operative position, and after the door is in a closed position, allows the latch 7 to return to its normal position. The arm 8 on the interior of the post B rests upon a stop member 11, and thus keeps the latch in its operative position. Directly above said stop member is located a similar device 13, which prevents the latch 8 from taking more than the proper swing.

The operation of the latch is as follows: By giving the door or gate A a shove or push, the cam 9 comes in contact with the latch 7 with such force as to raise the same from its operative position, as shown in F ig. 3, and allows the door to pass, after which the weight of the arm or handle 8 causes it to return to its former position, thus catching or fastening the door or gate securely. The door may be released from the interior by raising the handle 8, and from the exterior by raising the latch 6.

In view of the foregoing, further description of the invention and its operation is deemed unnecessary.

YVhat is claimed, is

1. The combination with a swinging door or gate and its post or jamb, of a latch pivoted upon said post or jamb and extending into the path of said door or gate, and a cam device having a spiral face and attached to said door or gate in position to engage with and displace the latch from its normal position.

2. The combination with a swinging door or gate and its post or jamb, of a latch pivoted upon said post or jamb, and with an operating handle at the opposite side of the post and operating to maintain the latch extending normally into the path of the gate, and a cam device having a spiral face attached to said door or gate in position to engage with and displace the latch from its normal position.

3. The combination with a swinging gate and its latch post, of a rod mounted for rotation through said post and carrying a latch at one end and a handle at the opposite end, said handle serving to maintain the latch normally in the path of the gate, and a cam having a spiral face and carried by the gate in position to engage the latch and displace it from normal position.

4:. The combination with a swinging gate and its latch post, of a rod mounted for rotation through said post and carrying a latch at one end and a handle at the opposite end, stops carried by the post and operating to limit the movement of the handle whereby the latch is maintained normally in the path of the gate, and a cam having a spiral face and carried by the gate in position to engage the latch and displace it from normal position.

5. The combination with a swinging gate and its latch post, of a latch pivoted upon said post and extending into the path of said door or gate, handles connected to the opposite sides of said gate and a cam connecting said handles around the free end of the gate, said cani having a spiral face and engaging the latch and displacing the same from nor- 10 nral position.
