To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD H. WEGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cameron, in the county of Nez Perce, State ofIdaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and

I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in carpet stretchers.

The object of the invention is to improve the construction of carpet stretchers and to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which is adapted to simultaneously stretch the four sides of a carpet and which may be readily and easilyl adjusted so as to be applicable to various sizes of carpets.

To this end the invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and particularly claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which,

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the central frame of the structure formed of four side members. One pair of opposite side members 6 being each formed of a single piece of material, while the other pair is each constructed of two separate sections 7 and 8. The said sections 7 being reduced in width throughout the greater portion of their length to form the tongue 9, while the sections 8 are each provided with a slot 10 adapted to receive the tongue 9 so as to permit a free movement of the tongue in said slot when desired. A series of apertures 11 extend transversely through the tongue 9 and a corresponding series of apertures 12 extend through the arms of the section 8 so that during the movement of the tongue 9 into the slot 10 the outermost aperture 11 will successively pass into registration with all of the apertures 12. By this construction it will be apparent that the side members of the frame constituted by sections 7 and 8 can be lengthened and shortened and maintained a desired length by the insertion of the bolt 13 in the registering apertures 11 and 12.

Extending laterally1 from the frame A on opposite sides thereof and secured to the sections 8 through the medium of the hinged connection 14: are stretcher bars each constructed of two separate sections 15 and 16. The sections 16 are reduced in width throughout the greater portion of their length to form the tongue portion 17 while the sections 15 are provided with a slot 18 adapted to receive the tongue 17 and permit a free longitudinal movement of the tongue therein. A series of apertures 19 extend transversely through the tongue 17 and a corresponding series of apertures 2O extend through the arms of the sections 15 so that during the movement ofthe tongue 17 into the slot 18 the outermost aperture 19 will successively pass into registration with all of the apertures 20. It will thus be evident that the stretcher bars constituted by the sections 15 and 16 can be lengthened and shortened and further, they may be maintained the desired length by the insertion of the bolts or pins 21 in the registering apertures 19 and 20.

Secured to each of the sections 8 of the frame A through the medium of a suitable hinged connection are the stretcher bars 22 which are also constructed in two sections and are adapted to lengthen and shorten. Said stretcher bars 22 are located in respective parallel spacement to the stretcher bars which are formed of the sections 15 and 16 and as they are identical in construction to the latter a detail description thereof will be omitted. A toothed bar 23 having its under face provided with a series of carpet engaging teeth 24: is hinged to the outer end of each stretcher bar 22 and the stretcher bar which is constructed ofthe sections 15 and 16 and which are disposed on the same side Cil of the frame A. The bar 23 has hinged at each end lengthening sections 2st adapted to be brought into use as the trame is expanded. Each of the side sections 6 of the trame A has hinged thereto in a suitable manner a pair of stretcher bars arranged in parallel spacement to each other. Each pair of stretcher bars 25 has hinged to their outer end a toot-hed bar 26 similar in construction in every respect to the bar 28 previously described. Each of the bars 26 is provided with lengthening sections 2T hinged thereto at its terminals.

ln order to more etl'ectually stretch the carpet in the direction of the corners otl a carpet, a series of similarly constructed stretcher bars are secured to the trame A through the medium ot the hinged connection 28. These stretcher bars are located at each corner ot' the frame A and are constructed of two sections Q9 and 30, the tormer ot which is provided on its under tace With carpet engaging teeth 8l and is reduced in Width throughout the greater portion ot' its length to form the tongue 32 While the section 30 is provided with a slot 33 to receive the tongue 32 and permit a free movement of the tongue therein when desired. A series of apertures 34 extend transversely through the tongue 32 and a corresponding series of apertures 35 extend through the arm of the section 30 so that during the movement of' the tongue 32 into the slot the outermost aperture 34 will successively pass into registration with all ot the apertures By the construction ust described it Will be obvious that the stretcher bars formed of the sections Q9 and 30 can be lengthened and shortened at will and maintained a desired length by the insertion ot' the bolt 36 in the registering apertures 34 and 85.

The operation of the device will be obvious; it being only necessary to adjust the 7arious stretcher bars to the desired length and apply the stretcher to the carpet in the position shown in Fig. Q, when a downward pressure exerted upon the center trarne A will cause said stretcher to assume the posi.- tion shown in F ig. 3 and thus etectually stretch the carpet in the desired position for inserting the necessary tacks. lt will also be equally obvious that the stretcher is adjustable in tyvo directions at right angles to each other, in one direction through the medium of the adjustable stretcher bars and those formed of the sections l5 and 16, and in the other direction through the medium of the adjustable sides of the central trame A.

Vhat is claimed is l. A carpet stretcher comprising a central frame, a series of stretcher bars hinged to said frame, means for lengthening and shortening said frame in one direction and means for lengthening and shortening certain of said stretcher bars in a different direction.

A carpet stretcher comprising a central frame, having a pair ot oppositely disposed sides constructed of telescoping sections whereby said frame may be lengthened and shortened in one direction, and a series ot' stretcher bars hinged to said frame, certain ot said stretcher bars being also constructed of telescoping sections, whereby they may be lengthened and shortened in a different direction.

A carpet stretcher comprising a cent-ral frame, having a pair of opposite sides each constructed of sections, one of which sections is formed With a tongue provided transversely with apertures and the other with ar slot for receiving said tongue and having apertures passing through the arms formed by said slot and adapted for variable registration with the apertures of the tongue, locking means adapted to pass through the registering apertures of said sections, Whereby they may be locked in a desired relation, a series of adjustable stretcher bars hinged to the adjustable sides of said frame and a series ot' nonadjustable stretcher bars hinged to the non-adjustable side of said frame.

A carpet stretcher comprising a central trame, having a pair of opposite sides adjustable whereby said frame may be lengthened and shortened in one direction, a series of stretcher bars hinged to the adjustable constructed ot' sections, one ot which is formed with a tongue provided with transverse apertures and the other With a slot for receiving said tongue and having apertures slot and adapted for variable registration with the apertures of the tongue, locking means adapted to pass through the registering apertures of said sections, whereby they may be locked in a desired relation and adjustment, and a series ot' non-adjustable stretcher bars hinged to the non-adjustable side ot the frame.

A carpet stretcher comprising a central trame, a series of stretcher bars hinged to said frame at right angles to the respective sides thereof, means for lengthening and shortening said frame in one direction, means for lengthening and shortening certain ot said stretcher bars in a different direction and an adjustable stretcher bar hinged to each corner ot said trame adapted to be disposed in alinement with the diagonal of the trame pasing through the corner to Which said stretcher bar is hinged.

6. A carpet stretcher comprising a central trame, a. series ot stretcher bars hinged to each side of said frame, and a toothed bar hinged to the outer ends ot' the stretcher bars disposed on the same side of the frame.
