To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. HUM- rHREY, a citizen of the United States, re siding at the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas -Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gas lamps.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved gas lamp having inverted burners, which is of high efficiency. Second, to provide an improved gas lamp which is very quickly and easily adjusted and cared for when in use. Third, to provide an improved gas lamp in which the number of burners can be readily changed and the uniform and finished appearance of the lamp preserved notwithstanding such changes. Fourth, to provide in a gas lamp of the inverted burner type, improved means for supporting the burners. Fifth, to provide a gas lamp of the inverted burner type which is compact in structure and graceful and attractive in appearance.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

At the lower l end of this I preferably provide a T-shaped coupling 2, from which depend the arms 3 and 4, the arm 4: being a dummy and the arm 3 a continuation or extension of the gas supply or delivery pipe. The chimney 5 is preferably mounted upon the arms 3 and 4, a flange-like coupling member 6 being provided at the upper end of the chimney. The chimney is also preferably provided with an outwardly and downwardly-projecting flange-like portion 7 at its lower end.
Through one side of the chimney is an opening 8, through which the end of the burner tube 9 may be passed in assembling the lamp, the burner tube being curved or goose-neck in shape. The opening 8 is preferably provided with a closure 10 which, in the structure illustrated, is supported by the pivot 11 so that it can be swung to one side to permit the introduction or removal of the burner tube 9. The closure 10 is preferably provided with a notch 12 adapted to receive the burner tube and closing onto the same so that the closure assists in supporting the burner tube in position.
The burner tube 9 is preferably provided with a plurality of burners 13, which are connected to the lower end of the tube by the branching arms 14, the arms being grouped around the tube 9 so that the vertical portion of the tube 9 is located centrally of the chimney and the burners are grouped centrally within the flange portion of the chimney, as is illustrated.
At the lower end of the supply pipe is a valve casing 15, having an upwardly-projecting nozzle 16 thereon, a regulating valve 17 being provided for the nozzle. ()n the nozzle is a coupling member 18 having air inlet ports therein, the ports preferably being of such size that the nozzle 17 can be manipulated through the same. The upper end of the coupling member 18 is adapted to receive the end of the burner tube, see Fig. 2, and it thus assists in supporting the burner tube in position. The valve casing is arranged to project through the outer casing 20, the casing being slotted at 21 to permit the adjusting of the casing when it is desired to have access to the parts within. The valve operating mechanism for the main valve 23 and the pilot valve 24 is 011 the outside of the casing. As the details of this operating mechanism forms no part of this invention, they are not described herein.
The outer casing 20 is adapted to rest upon the outwardly-projecting flange 25 mounted on the chimney. This is preferably in the form of a band adapted to embrace the flange portion of the chimney, as clearly appears from the drawing, the upper end of the band being flared outwardly. The flange 25 is provided with air inlet openings 26 through which the air passes from the outer casing to the globe 27, and thence to the chimney and burners. The outer casing 20 is provided with air inlet openings 28 through which the air passes to openings 26 and to the burner tube. The globe 27 is supported on the globe band 29, which is hinged at 30 to the arm 31, depending from the casing support 25. The globe supporting band is held in its closed position by means of the pin 32 which engages the arm 33. The details of this are not illustrated, as they will be readily understood. The pilot burner 34 is preferably arranged with its tip within the chimney, as is illustrated.
The mantles 35 are carried by the mantle support 36. This mantle support is provided with a flange 37 at its edge, adapted to embrace the lower end of the chimney. On this flange are pins 38 adapted to be inserted in slots in the chimney flange, not illustrated, and engaged by the ring-like member 40 which is provided with bayonet slots 41. As the details of this mantle support form no part of the present invention, they are not illustrated herein, the mantle support being preferably that described in the joint application of the applicant with Alfred II. Humphrey and Reginald lVright, filed July 13, 1908, Ser. No. 443,292.
To support the mantle support when it is released from the chimney, I preferably provide a supporting rod 42, which is arranged to be vertically and pivotally adjusted in a bearing 43 secured on the outside of the chimney, so that when the mantle support is released from the chimney and dropped down, it can be swung to one side for con venience in manipulation. To assist in centering and supporting the burners, they are preferably provided with outwardly-projecting lugs 44 adapted to engage with the inwardly projecting lugs or members 45 on the chimney. This prevents the lateral swinging of the burners and assists in centering and holding them in position. I illustrate the lamp as provided with three burners. These may be varied, as desired. By supporting the burners in this manner, the uniform and finished appearance of the lamp is maintained throughout the variations, altllOlgh the number of burners may be var1e The mantle support should be changed when the number of burners are varied, and to do this, it is only necessary to remove the nut 46 from the supporting rod 42 and supply a support adapted for the requisite number of mantles. As a convenient means for holding the casing in its elevated position I provide an arm 47 which is pivoted on the arm a to be swung out to serve as a rest for the casin By forming and arranging the parts as I have illustrated and described, I secure a lamp having a plurality of burners which is compact and graceful in appearance and very eliicient. The structure is very easily adjusted to the particular pressure and quality of gas, a single adjusting mechanism answering for a plurality of burners. Further, an even feed for the several burners is insured.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in detail in the form in which I have embodied them. I am, however, aware that they are capable of considerable variation in structural details without departing from my invention but as these variations will readily occur to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the same herein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
1. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe and having outwardly and downwardly-projecting flange like portions at its lower end, and an opening in the side thereof, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; an upwardly-directed gas delivery nozzle connected to said supply pipe; a curved burner tube removably arranged through said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted. burners on its inner end, located within said flange like portions of said chimney; a coupling member with which the outer end of said burner tube is adapted to telescope, mounted on said nozzle; and burner supporting members arranged within said chimney.
2. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe and having outwardly and downwar ly-projecting flange-like portions at its lower end, and an opening in the side thereof, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube removably arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end, located within said flangelike portions of said chimney; a closure for said opening in said chimney; and burner supporting members arranged within said chimney.

In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe and having outwardly and downwardly-projecting flange-like por tions at its lower end, and an opening in the side thereof, said supply pipe being ar ranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube removably arranged through said openingin said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end, located within said flangelike portions of said chimney; and burner supporting members arranged within said chimney.

In a gas lamp, the combination with a v gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe having outwardly and doWnwardly-projecting flange-like portions at its lower end, and an opening on the side thereof, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; acurved burner tube removably arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end located within said flange-like portions of said chimney; an outer casing adapted to be adjusted to offer access to said burner to permit the adjustment or removal thereof.
5. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening in the side thereof, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; an upwardly-directed gas delivery nozzle connected to said supply pipe; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end; a coupling member with which the outer end of said burner tube is adapted to telescope, mounted on said nozzle; a closure for said opening in said chimney; outwardly projecting lugs on said burners; and lugs on said chimney arranged to coact with said lugs on said burners and with said burner tube in centering and supporting the burn ers.
G. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening in the side thereof, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end; a closure for said opening in said chimney; outwardly-projecting lugs on said burners; and lugs arranged on said chimney arranged to coact with said lugs on said burn.- ers and with said burner tube in centering and supporting the burners.
7. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening in the side thereof, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; an upwardly-directed gas delivery nozzle connected to said supply pipe; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end; a coupling member with which the outer end of said burner tube is adapted to telescope, mounted on said nozzle; and a closure for said opening in said chimney.
8. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening in the side thereof, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners 011 its inner end; and a closure for said opening in said chimney.
9. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe, of a chimney having an opening in the side thereof, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; an upwardly-directed gas delivery nozzle connected to said supply pipe; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end; a coupling member with which the outer end of said burner tube is adapted to telescope, mounted on said nozzle; outwardly-projecting lugs on said burners; and lugs on said chimney arranged to coact with said lugs on said burners and with said burner tube in centering and supporting the burners.
10. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening in the side thereof; said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end; outwardly-projecting lugs on said burners; and lugs arranged on said chimney arranged to coact with said lugs on said burners and with said burner tube in centering and supporting the burners.
11. In a gas lamp, the combination with av gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening therein, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end; a closure for said opening in said chimney having a slot therein to receive said burner tube when in its closed position;
outward projecting lugs on said burners;
' and lugs on said chimneys arranged to coact with said burners in centering and supporting the burners.
12. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening therein, said supply pipe being aranged on the outside of said chlmney; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney; and a closure for said opening in said chimney having a slot therein to receive said burner tube when in its closed position.
13. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening therein, said supply pipe being ar ranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney and having a plurality of inverted burners on its inner end; outward-projecting lugs on said burners; and lugs on said chimney arranged to coact with said lugs on said burners in centering and supporting said burners.

In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening therein, said supply plpe belng arranged on the outside of said chimney; an upwardly-directed gas delivery nozzle connected to said supply pipe; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney; a coupling member with which the outer end of said burner tube is adapted to telescope, mounted on said nozzle; and a closure for said opening in said chimney adapted to engage said burner tube when in its closed position.
15. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening therein, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney; and a closure for said opening in said chimney adapted to engage said burner tube when in its closed position.
16. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening therein, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; an upwardly-directed gas delivery nozzle con- 'nected to said opening in said chimney; a
coupling member with which the outer end of said burner tube is adapted to telescope, mounted on said nozzle; and a closure for said opening.
17 In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney having an opening therein, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube arranged through the said opening in said chimney; and a closure for said opening.
18. I11 a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube having a plurality of burners on its inner end; outwardly-projecting lugs on said burners; and lugs on said chimney arranged to coact with said lugs on said burners and with said burner tube ill-centering and supporting the burners.
19. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe, of a chimney, said supply plpe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube removably arranged through the Wall of said opening; a burner mounted on said burner tube; and coacting lug-like members on said chimney and burner, for the purpose specified.
20. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe, of a chimney, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a curved burner tube having a plurality of burners thereon removably arranged through the wall of said chimney; and burner engaging members within said chimney, coacting with said burner tube in removably supporting said burners.
21. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe, of a chimney; a burner tube having a burner thereon removably arranged in said chimney; and members within said chimney, coacting with said burner tube in removably supporting said burner in an inverted position.
22. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe and having an out wardly and downwardly-projecting flan e like portion at its lower end, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a valve casing connected with said gas supply pipe; an upwardly-projecting gas delivery nozzle on said valve casing; a curved burner tube having a burner on its inner end located within said chimney flange; a coupling member with which the outer end of said burner tube is adapted to telescope, mounted on said nozzle, said coupling member being provided with air inlet ports; and members within said chimney, coacting with said burner tube in supporting said burner.
23. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe and having an outwardly and downwardly-projectin flangelike portion at its lower end, sai supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a valve casing connected with said gas supply pipe; an upwardly-projecting gas delivery nozzle on said valve casing; a curved burner tube having a burner on its inner end -located within said chimney flange; and members within said chimney, coacting with said burner tube in supporting said burner.
24-. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe and having an outwardly and downwardly-projecting fiangelike portion at its lower end, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a valve casing connected with said gas supply pipe; an upwardly-projecting gas delivery nozzle on said valve casing; a curved burner tube having a burner on its inner end located within said chimney flange; and members within said chimney, coacting with said burner tube in supporting said burner.
25. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a valve casing connected with said gas supply pipe; an upwardly-projecting gas delivery nozzle 011 said valve casing; a curved burner tube having a burner on its inner end; a coupling member With which the outer end of said burner tube is adapted to telescope, mounted on said nozzle, said coupling memher being provided with air inlet ports; and members Within said chimney, coacting with said burner tube in supporting said burner.
26. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply plpe; of a chimney mounted 011 said gas supply pipe, said supply pipe being 2 arranged on the outside of said chnnney; a valve casing connected with said gas supply pipe; an upwardly-projecting gas delivery nozzle on said valve casing; a curved burner tube having a burner on its inner end; and members within said chimney, coacting with said burner tube in supporting said burner. 27. In a gas lamp, the combination with a gas supply pipe; of a chimney mounted on said gas supply pipe, said supply pipe being arranged on the outside of said chimney; a valve casing connected with said gas supply pipe; an upwardly-projecting gas delivery nozzle on said valve casing; a curved burner tube having a burner on its inner end; and members within said chimney, coacting with said burner tube in supporting said burner.
