LAND-ROLLER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Eatented Apr. 5, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. WILDnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Monroe, in the county of Monroe and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land- Rollers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates particularly to water-ballasted land rollers, and consists in the novel and simple construction of the in the peculiar arrangement and combination of its parts, and in certain details of construction as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a vertical central section through a land roller embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is an end View thereof.
The reference-letter A designates the roller proper formed of sheet metal, comprising a cylindrical rolling surface B and heads C and D having outwardly extending annular flanges E adapted to be riveted to end portions of the surface B. Each of the heads described is centrally apertured, as at F, and registering with each aperture and riveted upon the marginal portion of the head about the aperture is a cast metal hub G. The external surface of the hub is made smooth, so
as to form a journal, while the interior 1s screw-threaded, as at a, to receive a threaded plug 1).
In the present instance I have shown the roller as of the hand type, and provided with a handle H terminating at its lower end in a fork formed by angular irons I,
each iron at its lower extremity being apertured and adapted to engage over the journal formed by the hub. The forked ends of the handle are preferably though not necessarily sprung upon the journals, and are held against displacement by flanges J formed upon the screw plugs for that purpose.
In practice, the parts being constructed as set forth, the roller is weighted by water, inserted within the cylinder through one of the hollow trunnions or hubs. After the roller is ballasted in this manner the screw plug is replaced, forming a tight joint, and the roller is in condition for use.
What I claim as my invention is,-
1. In a land roller, the combination with a cylindrical headed sheet metal drum, the heads being centrally apertured, of a hub secured to each head apertured to register with the head aperture, the alining openings forming a water conduit and the exterior of the hub being fashioned to form a handle trunnion, a handle for the roller having apertured ends engaging the trunnions, and removable closures for the hubs constituting retainers for the handle ends.
2. In a land roller, the combination with a cylindrical headed drum formed of sheet metal, the drum heads being centrally apertured, of a cast metal hub apertured to form a Water conduit secured to each head to register with the head opening, the hubs being fashioned exteriorly to form journals or trunnions for the handle, a forked handle for the roller having the extremities of the fork laterally apertured for engagement with the trunnions, and screw-plugs for engaging the hubs provided with annular flagges constituting retainers for the handle en s.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD S. WILDER.
