LAND-ROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Application led March 25, 1912. Serial No. 686,028.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. McILvoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gettysburg, in the county of Iottcr and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Land-Roller; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful land roller.
The primary object of they invention is to provide an improved device of this nature, in which improved features of construction are involved.
One of the features of the construction is that the roller comprises an inner and outer sheet metal shell, between which a body of concrete or cement is arranged.
Another feat-ure of the construction is the provision of the end plates arranged be tween the outer shell and the supporting axle of the roller, thereby subjecting the outer shell to all the strain and weight incident to the travel of the roller, and relieving the inner shell of all strain and weight `excepting its own.
Another feature of the construction is the provision of means for causing the cement to closely adhere to the adjacent surfaces of the inner and outer shells.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings t-Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the land roller constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longit-udinal sectional view through the roller. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the draft frame for the roller, in the arms 2 of which frame, the supporting shaft or axle 3 is mounted. The .land roller et is mounted for rotation on the axle 3.
The land roller 4 comprises the inner and outer shells '5 and 6, between the adjacent faces 7 of which a body of cement 8 is arranged. It will be clearly observed that the inner shell is not subjected to any of the weight of the draft frame and the operator. This has been found to be an important advantage, because it obviates the possibilities of the cement becoming crushed and displaced, thus rendering this roller more prac tical, efficient and desirable. The end plates E) of the roller are formed with annular recesses 10 to receive the ends of the outer shell 6. The end plates S) are journaled upon the axle 3.
To hold the plates 9 clamped to the outer shell tie rods 11 are provided, which are secured in place by the nuts 12. The inner surface of the outer shell is formed with projections 13, while the outer facial circumference of the inner shell is provided with similar lugs ll. The projections and lugs 13 and 11 are arranged in staggered relations with one another. The tie rods 11 are supplied with lugs 16, which are also in staggered relation with one another and with the projections and lugs 13 and 111. The various projections and lugs constitute means for causing the cement to hang in po sition and adhere to the surfaces 7 of the shells 5 and (3, and to obviate the chances of the inner shell moving relative to the ce nient. The tie rods 11 not only hold the plates 9 in position, but also assist in holding the cement in position. '.lo hold the plates 9 from slipping relative to the outer shell means 17 are provided, to engage the plates 9.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In combination, an axle, a land roller journaled thereon7 the land roller comprising inner and outer sheet metal shells, and end plates having annular recesses to receive the ends of the outer shell, a body of concrete arranged between the adjacent circumferential surfaces of the shells, and tie rods extending through the concrete and securing the plates to the outer shell.
2. In combination, a draft frame having an operators seat, an axle journaled in the frame, a land roller journaled thereon, the land roller comprising inner and outer shells, and end plates having annular recesses to receive the ends of the outer shell, a body of cement arranged between the ad jacent circumferential surfaces of the shells, the circuln'lerential surfaces of the shells having projections and lugs ar anged in staggered relations with one another to hold the cement from slipping relative to the shells, tie :rods having projections arranged in staggered relations with one another and extending through the cement and securing the plates to the ends of the outer shell, the projections of the rods being in staggered name to this specification n the presence of two subscrllomg Witnesses.
