Application filed February 8, 1809. Serial No. 476,548.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l. EMU. 'EioNi-ni. a citizen of the United States. and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York. have invented certain new and useful Iinpi-oveineuts in .-\|lt iara tus for Cutting Paper into Strips-and inting Scales Thcrcon. of which the followin is a specification, such as will enable those sliilleil in the art to which it apportuins to make and use the same.
This invention relates to machines t up parntus for cutting rolls of paper or similar material into atripa or tapes and printing measuring .-iea le.- thereon, i-iairl strips or tapes heiiig' designed to he rolled into rolls of cloth, ribbons or similar material in order that; the exact amount of ribbon, cloth or other material in the roll may be determined at: an) ii1l\8, \\'llll'(h a retail dealer in goods of this class may determine at. a glance the amount of goods remaining in the rolls after a part thereof has been sold. and also determine when pairliasiu goods of this class from wholesale dealers the amount of goods contained in a roll.
The invention is fully iliselonedin lhe fullowing spin-il'ieutioin of which the aeeompanyiiig drawings form a part. in which the separate parts of til) improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each at the views, and in which;-

In the practice of my invention 1 provide a suitable frame a composed of side members connected in the usual or any desired manner and the front end portion of which is provided with supports or bearings a in which,.-in practice, is mounted a roll' a of paper or any suitable fibrous material, and rearwardly of which is placed a pair of food and wide rolls a between which, the paper from the lOll G is fed as indicated at a in Fig. 1.
In the rear portion of the frame a is placed another pair of feed and gfuide rolls.
a, and the feed and guide r is a are placed one above. another 'as are also the cod and guide rolls a, and at the rear of the feed and aide rolls a is placed a platen roll a t. c top surface of which is in ii horizontal plane which passes between the rollers of the separate pairs a and (1.
Supported above the platen roll a is ii shaft I provided with a plurality of rint ing wheels 6 which, in the form 0 conatriietiui i-ilioivn, are seven in number as indicated in Fi 3 and above the rinbing rovide with ii transverse bar or support; on which are mounted adjiiatable slides b to which are pivoted arms I) which col-res 0nd in number with the rioting w eels b and which are provi ed with inking ro lei-s b" adapted to bear on the wheels b, and the slide:- b are provided with set. screws 11' by which theg may be adjusted on the bar or support and held in any desired position.
The printin wheels b are elearlg shown are t c Game in construction and operation as that described in U. S. Letters Patent wheels .No. 895,079, grnnicd to mo Aug.

With the construction herein described, will be seen, be printed on the sheet a of paper as it leaves the roll a and that said sheet will afterward be cut into narrow strips by the cutters d and c and that said strips will be wound on the spools or reels f and 9 but my invention is not limited to'the rewinding of the strips or ta es on the reels f and gfl'and any suitable is osal of said strips 3 or tapes may be made a ter the printing of the scales thereon and the cutting thereof. It will also be observed that with the con i the paper sheet into strips or tapes is done after the printing of the scales, but my invention is not limited to this arrangement of the various parts as shown and described,
that parallel rows of scales will I versely of the being adjustab e and the sheet of paper as it leaves the roll a may first be cut into strips or tapes which ma afterward be printed with the desired sca es; and various other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, from the spirit of my invention or s critic-ing its advantages.
In the construction shown, the bearings of the printing wheel shaft 7) are adj ustahlc hearings, as are also the bearings of the top feed and guide rolls a, and a;
The machine may be driven by a belt wheel 70 on the shaft of the bottom feed or guide roll a, or it may driven in any desired manner.
Havin fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a machine for cutting paper into strips and printing scales thereon, a frame, a paper roll support mounted therein, a platen roll mounted transversely of said frame, a printing shaft mounted over said platen roll, spaced )rinting wheels connected with said shaft, feed rollers mounted between the paper roll support and 'the platen roll and printing shaft cutter shafts arranged transfrume rearwardly of the lalen roll and printing shaft and provided with spaced cutters, uide and feed rollers arranged rcarward y of the cutter shafts. and spools on which the strips of paper are wound as they pass between said guide rollers, said rinting wheels and cutters on their respective shafts.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in resence of the subscribing witnesses this sixth day of February 1909,
