Be it known that I, Emmi: OSBORNE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improve ments in Simmerorkers, of which the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a somewhat well known class of devices for operating hinged window blinds or shutters from the inside of a room without the necessity of opening a window, which comprise a worm-wheel carrying an externally located shutter-open ating lever-arm, worm in mesh with the worm wheel and internally accessible means for imparting back and forth rotative move ments to the worm for closing or opening movements of the shutter.
It is regarded as highly desirable to employ non-metallic cords having winding and unwinding engagements with the part of the device in which the worm is comprised, for imparting the reverses. rotative movements to the worm, in preference to metallic chains and the adaptation of the device for the operative connections of the latter; and a principal object of this invention is to produce a slmtter-operating device, of the general class above indicated, in which not only cords are employed as the worm operating equip-E ments. but such provisions are made for the retention of the cords in their proper relations to the worm comprising element of the device that assurance is had that the device, when fitted partly into a mortise therefor in the window frame or casing, so that the place of engagement of the cords with the worm element is not accessible, ever reliably remains proof against derangement because of any possibility of the cords becoming bound or obstructed in their properly guided winding and unwinding engagements. And in pursuance of this object the aim of the invention is to provide certain simple, cheaply and practiclbly produced and easily assembled equipments located and cooperating between parts of the supporting frame of the device and portions appurtenant to the worm with which the cords having alternately their winding and unwinding engagements.
Another object is to so construct and ar range the parts of the shutter operating device that the latter is rendered applicable, either as a. right or left in any situ- Specification of Letters Patent.

1 ation desired and without necessitating the construction of specially formed sets of the devices for use at ditferent sides of a window casing. And another object is to render the device adaptable for its operating action on shutters on which the slotted arm engaging plate may be variably located.
To these ends the invention consists in the combination or arrangement of parts and the construction of certain of the parts all substantially as hereinafter described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and as particularly set forth in the claims.

G G represent cup-shaped shells having in their backs f central axle accommodating apertures g and also having each a perforation it beyond the center; and these cupshaped shells are set with their backs against the inner faces of said lugs O O and have their annular walls surrounding and hidesing the aforesaid spirally grooved hub'like extensions; and the annular walls have apertures 2 i therethrough, the one of which is near the top of one shell while the other is near the bottom of the other shell, as to be clearly perceived in Fig. 7.
The axle pin m is passed with a driving fit through the lug, through the central apertures in the shell backs and through the bore of the double hub worm; and in order that cupshaped shells may be always held against any rotative displacement, but always with their apertures 2 top and the other near the bottom, screws 0 are employed which have thread engagements through and from the outer side of the lugs C and have their reduced and non threaded inner extremities engaged in the aforementioned non-axial perforations in the plane backs of the shells. Two cords are employed having winding and unwinding engagements wi h the grooved hub-extension and passing therefrom horizontally and inwardly through suitable openings therefor in the window frame over and partially around cord guiding devices z which are invardly located on or fitted into the window frame. The cords have such reversed arrangements and capabilities for action that when one cord is drawn upon and unwound,rotating the double hub worm, for causing, through the partial rotary movement of the worm wheel, in mesh therewith, a swinging shutter operating movement of the lever arm E,the other cord will be wound up 011 the spirally grooved hub with which it is engaged; and, of course, when the wound up cord is drawn upon, to re versely operate the shutter worker, the cord which had previously been drawn, and unwound, is rewound on the spirally grooved hub to which its end is secured.
The shutter operating arm E comprises a bar section 8 of longitudinally channeled form and having a longitudinal slot 1/ in its back, and a second bar section r, slidably fitted in the channel of the bar section 8, having at its outer extremity an angularly extended shouldered lug '20 for engagement in a. well known manner, common in shutter workers, in the slot in in the angular horizontally applied shutter plate. By loosening the screws, moving the bar section o inwardly or outwardly and again turning up the screws, the lever arm shortened or lengthened so that its shutter engaging end lug is nearer or farther from the center of the partial rotary movement of the worm wheel whereby the radius of the arc movement may be varied and the device adapted to meet. different requirements for different shutters as called for by the widths of the shutters and the most available location on them of the slotted angle plate y. The shutter worker in complete form with the exception of the cord guiding fittings J J may be made up in stock with the operating cord in their proper winding and unwinding engagements and the builders or purchasers of the shutter workers will have to give no heed to adjustments or fixing of the cords relatively to the grooved hubextensions of the worm, as assurance of their retention in their proper working relations is had by the provision of the cup-shaped shell made and applied as hereinabove fully and particularly described; and there can be no derangement of their cords in their relations to the double hubbed worm at any time during the use of the shutter worker,- an important consideration when it is taken into account that the most important working portions of the device are located in a mortise in the window frame and not readily accessible after the shutter worker has been secured by screw in its proper position.
I claim 1. In a shutter-worker, a bracket-frame to be fitted to a window-frame, having an outwardly extended casing and inwardly extended opposed lugs, a wornrwheel, rotatively fitted in said casing and carrying a shutter-operating lever arm. a worm having opposite hub-like extensions, which are provided with helical guiding grooves, rota tively supported by and between said lugs, cup-shaped shells having their backs against the inner sides of, and detachably secured to, said lugs having their annular walls surrounding the spirally grooved opposite hub like extensions of the worm wheel and having apertures, one of which is near the top of one shell while the other is near the bottom of the other shell, flexible operating means having winding and unwinding en gagements with said grooved extensions, and passing therefrom horizontally and inwardly through the window-frame and guiding devices for said flexible operating means inwardly located on the window frame.
2. In a shutter-worker, a bracket frame to be fitted to a window frame, having an outwardly extended casing and inwardly exessyzee tended opposed lugs, a worm wheel rotatively fitted in said casing and carrying a shutter operating lever arm, a worm. having, and centrally between, opposite hub like extensions which are provided with helical cord-guiding grooves and which worm and hubs have an axial here from end to end therethrough, cup shaped shells having their backs centrally apertured and also having perforations outwardly beyond their centers, and set against the inner faces of said. lugs, and having their annular walls surrounding the said spirally grooved hub extensions, and having apertures, one of which is near the top of one shell while the other is near the bottom of the other shell, an axle pin passed through the lugs, the central apertures in said shell-backs, and the bore of the double hubbed worm, screws having thread engagements through and from the outer sides of said lugs and having their ends engaged in the non-axial perforations in the shell-backs, cords having winding and unwinding engagements with said grooved hub extensions, and passing therefrom horizontally and inwardly through the window- :l'rame, and cord guiding devices inwardly located on the window-frame.
3. A shutter-worker, comprising in combination with a casing, a worm-wheel journaled in said casing, a worm-gear mounted outside said casing and meshing with said worm-wheel, hubs having spiral channels located on each side of said worm-gear, fiexible operating means wound .on said hubs,
and casings inclosing said hubs and having apertures opposite the points of said hubs rounding said wheel and carrying externally a worm-gear in mesh with said wheel, oppositely disposed hubs carried by said worm- 1 gear, and having spiral. channels formed therein, and oppositely wound operating cords secured to said hubs.
In a shutter worker, a bracket. frame to be fitted to a window casing, supporting, in mesh with each other, an axially vertical wormwheel and an axially horizontal worm, means for imparting rotative movements to the worm, a shutter operating arm extending radially of, and on a plane at right angles to, the axis of the worm wheel,
1 comprising two longitudinally slidablemenr hers, slidable upon one another, one of said members being projected from the worm wheel, and the other member having means for a sliding engagement with a fixture on a i shutter, and means for detachably confining the one member of the arm in its longitudinal adjustment on the other.
6. The combination with awindow casing and a shutter hinged to the casing and provided, adjacent a horizontal edge portion thereof, with a metallic fixture comprising a horizontal slotted flange, of a bracket frame to be secured on the window casin supporting, in mesh with each other, an axially vertical worm wheel and an axially horizontal worm. means for imparting rota tive movements to the worm, and a shutteroperatingarm comprising two relatively loi'igitudina-lly slidable members, one of which is aifixed to and radially extended from the worm wheel, and the other member having at its outer extremity an angularly turned lug for a sliding engagement in the slotted horizontal flange on the fixture on the shutter, and means for detachably confining the one member of the arm in its longitudinal adjustment on the other.
