Application le .Tune 22, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, Dxvin DonimN, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Noblesville, in the county ot' Hamilton and State ot lndiaiurn have invented certain new and usetl'il .lmprmfements in Combination-Locksg and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clearv`r and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in locks`r especially that class termed padlocks which are opened by a, combination mechanism.
lft has for its object to provide a device consisting of the minimum or a small number ot parts, certain ot' which are interchangeable, whereby a variety ot combinations may be obtained,
The invention consists ot certain instrumentalities or teatures substantially as hereinafter disclosed and defined by the claim.
ln the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment ot' my invention and forming a part ot the specification, Figure l, is a trent elevation of a lock with its parts in assembled position. Fig. :2 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section produced on the line oit Fig. 2. `Fig. -lis a plan view otl a contrivance for turning the disks which operate the lock, and llig. 5 is a like view ot one ot the disks ot' the lock.
In the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding par-ts in the several views, l is a. shell or casing wherein are located r arranged the various operative parts of the locking mechanism, said casing having upon its outer surr'ace a dial 3, upon the face of which is a plurality of numerals.
Projecting from the inner sui-tace ot one of the sides ot the casing l is a stud or shaft 2 and upon one end of this stud or shaft is arranged a disk or wheel 8 having a central rip-raised hollow portion or socket- 8 receiving the outer end of the stud or shait 2, permitting said wheel to turn thereon, said wheel being received partially within the casing l. Said rip-raised portion or socket 8d of said Wheel is provided with a screw Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 503,?21.
threaded extension or stem 5 and to this stein or extension is applied a hub 5a carrying a pointer or hand 4 and also a handle 6, said pointer being arranged to move over or in front ot a dial 3 supplied to the casing l.
Arranged within the casing l is a series of disks 7 carried by the stud or shaft 2, one ot said disks 7 having a pin l() engaging any one ot a number ot peripheral notches 9 of the wheel 8, which engagement is effected by suitably manipulatingthe handle 6 turning said wheel, as is obvious. Said disks have circular channels ll therein for receiving the studs l0 or" adjacent disks 7, whereby said disks may be rotated. Each ot said disks has a notch l2 in its circumference or periphery, which when the disk is turned so as to bring the notch in engagement with an extension or projection 13 o1" a securing plate lll, will allow said securing plate to swing outof engagement with a shackle 16 permitting the release of a tongue portion 17 ot the securing plate from a notch in the shackle, said shackle being adapted to swing laterally upon its pivot 18 secured to the casing l as in providing tor the unlocking action ot said shackle. Said shackle is provided with a groove 19 at one end adjacent to its pivot 18, and with a lug 20 projecting from one wall of said groove, while a spring 2l, having one end thereotl looped around the pivot 1S and engaging the stud -O, provides for the automatic retraction ot the notched end ot the shackle lo trom the casing l when disengaged from the locking or securing plate i4, said spring having its opposite end resting against the inner surface ot the lock casing l.
lVhat claim is:
A device comprising' a casing, a shackle pivoted at one end therein, means tor the retention of said shackle under resilient action, a plurality of disks arranged upon a stud projecting 'from the inner surface of said casing, said disks having circular channels therein, each disk having a pin arranged intermediately of the terminals ol each channel, a. stem arranged in said casing and carrying an indicating hand for registering with a dial upon said casing, a wheel integral with said stem and having a series of peripheral notches adapted :tor engagement with a pin of oneof said disks, said channuine to J[his specification in the presence 0f nels also receiving' pins of adjoining disks two subscribing Witnesses.
c 10'@ b 111 e d l eci fel e anIve e t DAVID DORMAN with said shackle and having i111 extension for engagement with Iachnl notches n1 said l Nitnessesz disks. i JAMES R. CHRISTIAN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my i F. G. CHRISTIAN.
