IMPROVEMENT IN ROTATING HOOK FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
1 I, J anon HUSNIK, of Tabor, in Bohemia, Austria, have invented a new and useful Rotary Hook for Sewing-Machines.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
My invention relates to rotary-hook sewing-machines, and consists in a device which prevents such deflection of the needle as will endanger injury to either the hook or the needle by one of them coming in contact with the other in use.
In order to prevent the deflection of the needle across the path or plane of the hook, I form upon the rear extremity of the hook a projection or tail, which, though in the same plane as the point of the hook, is so much nearer the centre that it does not interfere with the formation of the loop or the entering of the same by the point of the hook. The said tail projects rearward, beyond the point of the hook, so that it will afford a lateral bearing for the needle point until the point of the hook has crossed the face of the needle in entering the loop.

General Description.
The main body B of the hook, with its point I), may be constructed as usual, and mounted upon a shaft, A, in customary manner. a
1 represents a tail or projection, formed upon the rear part of the hook, nearer the axis than the point I), and projecting backward beyond the said point, as
clearly shown in fig. 1, so as to protect and form a lateral support for the needle until after the point I) has crossed its face, so that it is impossible for the point of the rotating hook to pass behind or against the needle N, or for the latter to be so deflected, by pulling of the fabric in sewing, that it will be caused to strike. upon the hook in its descent.
From an inspection of figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings,
which figures represent the rotary hook as now usually constructed in the \Vheelcr Ct \Vilson sewing-machines, it will be evident that the unprotected needle N isliable to deflection by the drawing of the fabric to assist the feed, which is necessary with some kinds of work, as, for instance, in sewing very thick sea-ins,
' and is frequently practised by users of the machine when it is unnecessary. This deflection of the needle causes it to descend within or across the path or plane of the hook, and hence results in breaking of needle or thread, or both, or in the scratching and injury of Claim.
I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The tail or projection '1, upon the rotating hook of a sewing-machine, constructed and adapted to operate substantially as herein set forth.
