Description
WILLIAM R. HOLLINGSWORTH, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA Letters Patent No. 95,348, dated September 28, 1869.
IMPRQvIEiMENT vIN' HARROWS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom lit may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. HOLLINGSWORTH, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry, and State of Iowa, hr ve invented anew and valuable Improvement in Combined Harrows and Oultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed draw` ings, making a part' of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. v
Figure 1,0' the drawings, is a representation of the combined barrow and cultivator complete, in perspective. o
Figure 2 is a plan of the harrowdiead, or plate, showing position of timbers in plate when angle of inclination .is greatest.
Figure 3 represents the device when angle of inclination is least.
My invention relates to ,means for cultivating the soil; and
It consists, mainly, in constructing a metallic head to a barrow, so arranged and constructed as to be capable of holding securely the liarrow-beams, of allowing such beams tothe adjusted, by means of wedges, to a wide or narrow track, and also provided with means for securely holding and operating a cultivator between the barrow-beams.
The letters A, of the drawings, represent the two beams of my barrow, with the teeth arranged therein in the usual manner, and the letter B represents a metallic head, affixed to the front end thereof.
This metallic head consists of two plates, duplicate in form, having slots, a, through which the harrowteeth are passed, openings at e, toreceive the pin by which the cultivator is attached, and also openings at n, to receive the bolt by which the elevis or other device for attaching the team is connected with the harrow.
It will be observed that thc plates constituting the metallic head B are constructed with tlanches, passing downward and upward respectively, over the edges of the barrow-beams, forming a species of clasps or gripes upon the saine, the object of which is apparent.
In forming these plates, however, I do not make the spaces between the anches of. the same size as the barrow-beams, but leave spaces therein, outside the beams, adapted to receive wedges, as hereinafter inentioned. Y
The letters c represent wedges, removable at will, which I pass between the anches of the plates and the barrow-beams, or between the front ends of the *beams themselves.
`When I desire to increaseA the width of the harrowtraek, I place these wedges between `the vtiaiiehes and the beams respectively, as shown on, iig. 3, and when` I desire to lessen the width of said track, I place these wedges between the beams, as shown on tig. 2, or I place them between the inner ilanches of the plates and the inner sides of the beams, as may be most de,-
sirable The plates above. mentioned are held i'ii place and are iliade removable by means of bolts, secured by nuts and screws, that are passed through the'same and through Ythe barrow-beams.
The letter D represents a cultivator, connected with the head B by means of the removable pin e.
The above-described arrangement enables me to dispense altogether with the ordinary brace or cross-bar of a liarrow, provides means for an easy attachment of a cultivator, and for increasing or lesseiiiiig the track ot' a barrow at will, thereby orming a novel and convenient implement for agr'ici ltural purposes.
\V1iat I claim as my iiiven ion, and desire to secureI by Letters Iatcnt, is
l. The metallic liarrow-headl1ereiu described, coiisti-noted and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the metallic licad B and wedges c', when arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hercuiito subscribed my name, in the presence ot' tivowtiiesses. p
W. It. HOLLINGSWORTH,
Witnesses:
H. N. CRANE, WM. I. MAitsn'.
