' raised portions,
BUTT SA ANTON C. EGGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE LOKTILE COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FLOOR-COVERING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON C. Eeenns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved floor-covering of that kind in which a number of base-tiles, having raised portions, are connected by filling-pieces which are cemented onto the tile-shaped portions, so as to form a waterproof covering for the floors of halls, restaurants, ferryboats and the like; and for this purpose the invention consists of a floor-covering comprising square base-tiles of rubber or other elastic material, said tiles being provided with raised portions, lateral filling pieces between said raised portions cemented to the base-tiles, and additional filling-pieces between the said additional filling-pieces extending over the corners of the base-tiles and being cemented thereto so as to form a waterproof floor-covering.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a topview of my improved floorcovering, showing the lateral and corner filling pieces removed from a portion of the underlying base-tiles, Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line.2, 2, Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 4: show modified constructions of the floor-covering.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout.
Referring to the drawing, (4 represents the base-tiles, which form the underlying portion of my improved floor-covering. The base-tiles a are provided with raised portions Z), of cross or other shape, which are made integral with the thinner base-portions or cemented thereto. The raised portions 5 of the base-tiles a are connected by lateral filling-pieces b which extend over the abutting edges of two adjacent tiles, and by corner filling-pieces d which extend over the corners of four adjacent base-tiles a between the raised portions Z). The raised portions, lateral and corner fillingpieces may be made of any suitable pattern, provided Specification of Letters Patent.

that a nice fit of the parts is given to the same. The base-tiles a with the raised portions 6 are preferably made of rubber or other elastic material, while the filling pieces may be made of fiber or other hard material. The lateral and corner filling pieces are attached by suitable waterproof cement to the base-tiles, so that by the tight fit of the parts the passing of water or moisture under the tiles onto the floor is prevented, and a very effective waterproof floor-covering obtained, which is superior to the well-known floor covering with interlocking tiles, in which the water can pass through the joints between the tiles to the space between the tiles and the floor.
In Fig. 1 the lateral filling pieces 6 are so shaped that they act for the raised portions in the nature of locking pieces, while in the floor-covering shown in Fig. 3 the lateral filling pieces do not interlock with the raised cross-shaped portions, but with the corner filling pieces.
In Fig. 4 the lateral filling pieces are divided in a diagonal line, each half being formed as an integral part of the corner filling pieces by which the same result is obtained as with the floor-covering shown in Fig. 3, but in less convenient manner.
The improved floor-covering can be readily laid in position on the floor by starting with the laying of the base-tiles and following it up with the insertion and cementing of the lateral and corner filling pieces, until the entire floor is covered. As the base-tiles and filling pieces for the different patterns are ready for use, the covering of the floor is accomplished in a quick, effective and waterproof manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A floor-covering consisting of base-tiles having raised portions, lateral. filling pieces connecting the raised portions over the abutting edges of the base-tiles, and corner filling-pieces inserted between the raised portions and lateral filling pieces and eX- tending over the corners of the base-tiles.
2. A floor-covering consisting of basetiles having raised portions, lateral fillingpieces extending over the abutting edges of as my invention, I have signed. my name in the base-tiles, and aclclltlonal filling-pieces presence of two subscribing wltnesses. extending over the corners ot the base-tiles T! 1 T between the raisecl portions and lateral fill- 105 EGGERS' 5 ing pieces, said lateral and corner filling Witnesses:
pieces being cemented to the base-tiles. J. C0011,
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing HENRY J. SUHRBIER.
