POTATO-DIGGER POINT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Or'ro R. BRowN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hornell, in the county of Steuben and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Potato-Digger Points, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to potato diggers and has especial reference to a novel point to be employed in connection with the same.

An object of this invention is to form a point which will effectively raise the potatoes and deliver the same upwardly and inwardly at the rear end of the point so as to provide a more practical and efficient device than those formerly employed.

The iIHQlltlOll has for another object the provision of a point which comprises two plows which are oppositely positioned and which are turned inwardly in order to cooperate in feeding the potatoes centrally and rearwardly during the operation of the machine upon which the point is carried.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the point, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a detailed perspective view of one of the standards employed in connection with the device.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and inclicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates a heel plate to which two plows 11 and 12 are secured, the plows being provided wit-h elongated heels 13 and 14: respectively which are disposed in abutting relation upon the forward edges of the heel plate 10 and secured thereto by suitable rivets or bolts 15.

The plows 11 and 12 are turned inwardly so as to dispose their rear extremities or heels 18 and let in juxtaposition so as to feed the earth and potatoes centrally over the heel plate 10 to the machine upon which the plows are supported. The plows 11 and 12 are provided in the usual manner with the points 16 and 17 and are preferably provided at their rear ends with rearwardly ex- Specification of Letters Patent.

tending mold boards 18 and 19 which are curved inwardly at their upper edges in order to form continuations of the curvatures of the plows 11 and 12 to further the effect- 1 ive operation of the same. Landsides 20 l and 21 are positioned upon the opposite ends of the heel plate 10 and are engaged at their forward extremities against the under faces of the plows 11 and 12 and extended slightly rearwardly of the rear edge of the heel plate 10. The moldboards 1S and 19 are retained in position by the insertion of the forward edges of the same between the heel plate 10 and the plows 11 and 12, the heel plate 10 being enlarged at its opposite ends in order to conform to the curvatures of the plows 11 and 12 to form a brace for the same.

The plows 11 and 12 may be supported upon the heel plate 10 without the additions of the moldboards 1S and 19 and the landsides 20 and 21 when it is so desired, or when the same is to be so utilized as to not require the employment of the moldboards and landsides. The turning inwardly of the plows 11 and 12 is believed to be a decided advantage in the art as when the same are employed, the earth and potatoes are thrown centrally, and thereby a constant and steady feeding of the same is insured owing to the upward and inward curvature of the rear ends of the plows 11 and 12, this result being effected by the employment of the curved moldboards 18 and 19 which form the continuations of the plows 11 and 12.

For the purpose of supporting the plows 11 and 12 standards 22 and 23 are provided which are secured to the outer sides of the plows 11 and 12 respectively and are extended upwardly therefrom for the purpose of engaging the same upon a machine or implement to which the plows 11 and 12 are to be attached.

The standards 22 and 23 are each preferably formed of a strip of metal curved centrally between thin longitudinal edges to form the same of V-cross section, which formation produces strong and durable standards which are capable of withstanding all the strains incident to their employment. The lower extremities of the standards 22 and 23 are positioned by the insertion of the same between the plows 11 and 12, the moldboards 1S and 19 and the landsides 20 and 21, thus forming a strong support for the same.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A device as specified comprising a pair of standards, plows carried by said standards and a heel plate being enlarged at its opposite extremities secured to said plows, said plows being curved inwardly toward one another.

2. A device as specified comprising a heel plate being enlarged at its opposite extremitions of the curvature and landsides positioned upon the opposite ends of said heel plate adjacent said standards.

3. A potato digger point comprising a heel plate enlarged at its opposite ends, plows oppositely disposed and inwardly turned at the ends of said heel plate, points carried by said plows, moldboards extended rearwardly from said plows and supported upon said heel plate, landsides positioned upon the outer extremities of said heel plate and standards upwardly extended from said plows to support the same.

A device as specified comprising a heel plate, a pair of plows forwardly extended from said heel plate, elongated heels formed in said plows and engaged with said heel plate for securing said plows, said heels be ing extended inwardly and abutted at their rear extremities, moldboards rearwardly extended from said plows and supported upon said heel plate, landsides rearwardly ex tended from said plows and supported upon the opposite ends of said heel plate and standards upwardly extended from said plows and said landsides for supporting the same.
