Description
ma sew THOMAS S. SLEEPER, OF BING-I-IAMTON, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No; 95,279, dated September 28, 1869.
IMPROVED AXLE-SKEIN.
The Schedule referred t0 ill-H1656 Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whoa'n it may concew z: p I Be it known that I, TnoMAs SQSEEEPER, of Binghalnton, in the county of Broo'ine,-andState of-New York, have in'vented'amew and improved Modeof (ionstructing Skeinsfor Wagon Axle-Tree Spindles;
and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full and-exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon Figure l is a transveise longitudinal section, showing the insideangles of the skein.
V Figure ,2 isaj perspective view, representing the mouth on increased angle.
, Similar letters of reference each figure.
The nature of rny invention consists in the construction of a skein for'wa-gon axle-tree spindles, preindicate like parts in pared by machinery, with a mouth of increased capacity from the inner shoulder of the bearing-surface, to receive agreaterth-icknessof timber, thereby obviating the liability to break the spindle.
I construct the socket of my skein A with a con:
tinuous angle fronrthe'shoulder-nnt B to the inner shoulder O of the bearing, the angle of which I make slightly less than that of the ordinary skein, thereby. giving it a more natural bearing in the box.
-I then increase theangle from the shoulder C to the end D, for-the purpose of increasing the strength of the spindle at a point where it'is most liable to break when sheathed with the ordinary skein.
The skein patented by Cornelius Campbell, July- 11, 1867, has a continuous angle through its entire length, with a view to accomplish the same result, and it ms proved a failure, while my invention fnlly accomplishes the object.
.My improyte nent is designed for spindles fitted by the-n1achiiie'lpatented,;by Cornelius Campbell, October 9, 1866, with the exception of an improved guide plate for tnrningthe increased angle, I do not claim-broadly an lncreased or drspropon tionate enlargement of the socket of the skein heyond"; or inside of that portion of the skein upon wlnch the box hears, as that feature is shown in the patent of.
the collar 0, and is expanded on two or more sides of its axial centre, at an increased angle from the collar" ,0 to the'lno'uth I), substantially as and for the pur- "pose set forth.
THOS. s. sLEE'PE'n.
