Description

E. SCHWH-IDTER.
Heating Stove.
Pacented Sept. 28, 1869.
To all whom it, may concern ma. Pam: No. 95,273,
I WM, aim new new, it I E D HW D EROF HOVBIOKIEMNYEW dated lS'ept emb erl23, .1869.
COAL-STOVE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and n akin g part olthe same;
Be it known that I, com it SoHwmnTnn, of Hobokeu, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Heater;
andil do herebydeclare that the following is, a full,
i my-improvcd-heater. i i
Figni'eZ is a verticallongitudinal section of the same.
. Similar letters'of reference indicate corresponding wparts.:.' i 9 A i I clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledgin the art to make and use the 'same,
reference being hadto the accompanying drawings,
forming partiofthis specification: M Figure 1 represents a verticahtran'sversesection of The object of this invention is to construct aheat:
jug-apparatus in which the smoke will be, to a very large degree, consumed, so that with a comparatively fsmall quantity of fuel, agreater, degreeofheat can be r The same is in'a'deof suitable material and of suitable obtained.
w a The invention consists inarranging, in front of the heater or on one or moresides above the grate, avertical grate, which retains the fuel in place, and admits a side. draught,that'willenter below the upper burning-surfa'ce of thefuela 'S uchdraught will cause the I 1 fuel that is ignited on top, to burn gradually downward, and thegas escaping .fi'om-the, burning fuel to be consumed by the glowing fuelabove.

form and size.
Bis the fi're place C, the ordinary grate; D,the ash-pit; and, a
a, he door leading-to the ash-pit.
, b is an opening through. the front or side of the heater-i 1 it can be closed by a door, c, which is provided with a register, 01
' On the inner side this opening is-protected by a removable verticalgrate, E. i Y
Above the fire-place, and higher than the opening b,
is. another opening, e, throughthe front. or side of the heater, which-can be closed by a door, f.
F is a pipe, through-which the products of combustion can escape.
l The operation is as follows:
The fuel is put thrdughithe upper door f until about in line with the upper end of the even with the lower end of the aperture 0.
Upon the ordinary fuev is then placed some ignitingmatter, which will readil'y burn. When the same is well burning, the doorfis closed, while the doors a and o are left open.. I
As soon as the upperyportion of theordinary fuel is also on fire, which can be observed through a small orifice in the door f,'the doors a and e are also closed, and their registers d and g are slightly opened, to admit but little air. By means of these registers the -fire can be regulated.
The grate E serves to sustain the fuel, to admit air to and facilitate the stirring the, same.
Having thus described my invention,
1 claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent-5 W,
1. .The vertical grate E, arranged in a heater above themain grate O, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
-2. The heater, provided withthe apertures rt-,b,
and e, and containing the grates G and E and the doors a, 0,. and f, all arranged substantially as herein shown and described.. V
The above specification of my invent-ion signed by me, thisxlfithday of'August, 1869.
