SAFETY CAR STEP OR RUNNING-BOARD.
T o all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH C. DoDsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Leon, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Car Steps or Running-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to steps or running boards for the ends of freight cars to provide for the safety of brakemen when coupling cars together, and my object is to inexpensive device secured to a car by means which prevent two cars from coming together to such an extentI as to injure a brakeman standing upon the step or running board.
To this end my invention resides in the construction hereinafter specified with relation to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is an elevation of the adjacent ends of two cars, illustrating the practical advantage of my invention, and, Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a car to which my invention is applied.
Referring now a step or ruiming to these figures, I provide board 10, which is parallel Specification of Letters Patent.

with and beneath the end of the car A, and is bolted to, and supported by, the lower angular ends 1l of hangers l2. These hangt ers l2 are secured at their upper ends to the y end of the car A, by buffers 13 having central bolts 14, and said buffers extend a suffit cient distance out from the car end to prel, vent cars from coming together when they fail to couple, and thus prevent injury to the person upon the running board 10. The relative size of these several parts will, of course, depend upon the construction of the car to which they are applied.
I claim:
The combination with a freight car, of an end running-board or step, hangers depending from the car-end and supporting said running-board or step, and buffers securing the upper ends of said hangers to the car end, and outstanding therefrom for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses,
ELIJAH C. DODSON.
