Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 27, 1908. Serial No. 435,263.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER J. EUL, of Milwaukee, Wisconsim a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Holders for Cartons, Boxes, and other Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to display holders such as are used to display boxes and other receptacles.

My invention is especially adapted for the display of paper and pasteboard cartons and boxes, and its principal objects are to hold the boxes, cartons or other receptacles so that they will be well displayed, but will prevent their being abstracted from the holder by unauthorized persons.

My invention consists in the holder hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings.

Figure l illustrates a front elevation of one embodiment of my invention holding and displaying three cartons, and a place for another carton. F ig. 2 is an end or edge elevation looking from the right side of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the holder and one of the cartons as through 3-3 of F ig. l. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section through the holder as through the line 4-4 of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the holder as laid out flat, and in position for insertion and withdrawal of the cartons.

Similar characters represent like parts in all the figures.

l, 2 and 3 represent three leaves of some material of sheet form, with an edge of leaves l and 3 respectively, loosely connected with two opposite edges of leaf 2, so that said leaves can swing at their joined edges relatively to each other. Leaf 1 is provided with one or more cut away portions 4 having a tongue 5 extending from one side of the opening. In the drawings tongues 5 are in the upper portion of the leaf l, and extending from the upper side of the openings 4. The lower side or edge 6 of each of the openings 4 is above the lower edge of the leaf l where it joins the leaf 2. I have shown in the drawings said lower edge and the upright edges 7, 7 made straight. This, however, is not essential, as said edges may be of any form. The leaf 3 is adapted to be secured at or near its upper portion to the upper portion of the leaf l. This may be done in any desired manner, as for example, by means of movable fastening devices 8. Then the upper portions of the leaves l and 3 are directly fastened together, the whole device will be triangular in vertical transverse sections.

I have shown my improved display holder, as holding and displaying cartons, of a width sufficient to permit said cartons 9 to just enter between the two sides 7, 7 of the openings, and of a height about or slightly less than the height of said openings. The tongues 5 are inserted in the upper ends of the cartons 9, between the rear wall 10 of the carton and the flap l1 of the lid of the carton. The lower end or bottom 12 of the carton will be below the edge 6 of the opening 4 and rest upon the leaf 2 or bottom of the holder. When the cartons are inserted in the holder as above described, only a very small portion of the lower part of the front of the carton will be covered, the rest of the front being displayed, as well as the top of the carton, and nearly one-half of the two opposite sides of the cartons will be displayed, as the opposite edges 7 of t-he opening 4 will extend from near the bottom of the front of the carton to the top of the same at its back.

Any attempt to withdraw a carton when held by the holder as above described, would meet with serious dificulty. In fact it would be impossible to do so without either tearing away one of the walls of the carton or a part of the holder, as the tongue 5 would prevent the carton being lifted from the holder or withdrawn in a forward direction from the same, and the portion of the holder between the juncture of the leaves l and 2 and the edge 6 of the opening would prevent a similar withdrawal of the lower portion of the carton.

The proper way to insert the cartons into the holder is as follows: The leaves l and 2 are unfastened from each other and the three leaves l, 2 and 3 are spread out so as to be substantially in the same plane. The upper end of the carton 9 is inserted through the opening 4, with the part of the carton where the flap of the cover enters, in the rear. The tongue 5 is then inserted over the rear edge of the top of the carton and between its rear wall and the flap l1 of the cover. The carton is pressed upward until its bottom will be above the junction of the Patented Mar. 22, 1910.

What I claim as new and desire :to secu'ne by Letters Patent is:

l. A display holder for cartons, boxes or other'ireeeptacles, comprising ga tongue for insertion within a ypart of said receptacle, and a portion opposite said tongue for overflapping `said receptacle extending toward said tongue.
