CONVERTIBLE TABLE-BED.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. McCLURE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Table-Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in convertible table beds, and has for its obj ect the production of an article of furniture that when closed forms a table and when opened or extended, forms a bed.
My improved device consists essentially of a relatively stationary center section, two end or outside sections, which when in closed position surround and incase the said center section, and are longitudinally adjustably connected therewith; two members hinged to said center section and to which the wire bed bottom is attached, said members being adapted to be adjusted from vertical to horizontal position respectively when the device is closed in the form of a table, or extended in the form of a bed, and an adjustable table top hinged to one of the end or outside sections and adapted to be swung from vertical to horizontal position, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The extensible end sections 1, the relatively stationary center section 2, the ad justable top 3, and the members 4; hinged to the center section 2 form the main elements of my improved device. Fixed on each side of the center section 2 are two Tshaped male members 5, which are engaged and traversed by an internally rectangular shaped female member 6, one of which is fixed on the inner wall of the sides of the extensible end sections 1. These longitudinallyadjustable interlocking members 5 and 6 form the guides and adjustable con nections between the sections 1 and 2. Fixed on the bottom of the section 2 (see Figs. 4, 6 and 9) are two rectangular female members 7 having a longitudinal slot in their top, and attached to each end section 1.
At the inside center of the bottom rail are rectangular male members 8 engaging and traversing within the female members 7.
A pin 9 is fixed in the end of these members 8, which engages the slot of the members 7, which pins, when the end sections 1 are extended the proper distance, engage a stop 10. The members l are hinged at the outer ends of the center section 2, as shown in Fig. 7. Castings 11 are fixed on the inside of the side panels of the section 2. A hinge 12 working on the stud 13 carries the members t. This casting 11 is provided with an outwardly extended segmental flange 11 con centric with the stud 13, by which the casting is fixed to the side rail of the center section 2, also a horizontal portion 11 and an inwardly projecting flange 11 having a groove 11. The bottom of the groove 11 has recesses 11, and 11 engaged by the spring actuated bolt 14, which bolt is held in operative position by the housing 15 fixed on the members 41.. This bolt 14 traverses the groove 11 and thus movably connects the parts 2 and 4:, and is manually released from the recesses 11 and 11 by a bell crank 16, pivoted 011 the stud 17, which is fixed in the members 4.
A continuous cable 18 is attached to the two bell cranks and passes around the member 4, through guides 4. Fixed on the members 4 at 4 is a wire bed bottom 19, which when the device is closed to form a table, folds as seen at the right of the dotted line X, Fig. 4., and when the device is extended to form a bed this wire bed bottom is drawn tight, as seen at the left of the dotted line X, Fig. 4.
Fixed on the bottom of the center section 2, are auxiliary supporting springs 21, to prevent center sagging of the wire bed bottom.
IVhen the sections 1 are brought together to form a table, catches 20 and strike plates 20 fixed on the side panels of the sections 1 are brought into engagement, thus locking the two sections 1, together. The table top 3 is provided with extension brackets 22 pivotally connected to an arm at 26, said arm 23 being pivotally fixed to the side panels of one of the end sections 1 as at 24. A guide 25 is provided to prevent any transverse swinging movement of the arms 23, when the table top 3 is being moved from vertical to horizontal position. L-shaped brackets 27, are provided on the inside of the bottom end rail of the sections 1, which serve as stops, and supports for the hinged members 4, when they are down in horizontal position.
The operation of my device is: Presuming it to be in the form of a table, as shown in Fig. 1, the top 3 is thrown to the horizontal position, the spring catches 20 are released, and the end sections drawn away from the center section to the position shown in Fig. 2. The spring bolts 14 of one of the members 4 is released from engagement with the recess 11, by means of the bell cranks 16 and the cable 18, and the said member 4 is swung down to its horizontal position until it engages the stops 26, and the bolt 14 engages the recess 11, where it automatically locks in this position. Next the other member 4 is likewise swung to a horizontal position and looked as shown in Fig. 3, where the device has been converted into a bed, ready to receive the clothing. To reconvert it into a table, the locking mechanism of the members 4 is released and said members are swung up to a vertical position, as in Fig. 2. (The clothing may be left on the spring bed bottom, as the space between the members 4, when in vertical position is ample to accom modate all necessary bed clothing.) The end sections 1 are moved toward each other until the spring catches, 20, engage the strike plates 20", and the top 3, is then swung up from its vertical to horizontal position and thus the device is converted into a table, the
top being supported and adjusted by the arms 23.
It is obvious that many modifications of details of structure may be made without departing from the spirit and purpose of my invention,
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a center section and extendible end sections adjustably connected to- V gether, means for foldably supporting a bed bottom on the center section, an adjustable top, and arms pivoted at one end to one of the end sections and pivoted to the top at the other end.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a center supporting member, means for supporting a bed bottom mounted thereon, said means being adapted when in one position to extend said bed bottom, and in another position to fold the same, a vertically divided and extendible casing to surround the same, a top to cover the same, brackets fixed on the under side of the top, and arms pivoted to one part of the casing at one end and pivoted to said brackets at the other end.
3. In a device or the class described, the combination of a section provided with fold able means for supporting a bed bottom, a vertically divided casing adapted to sur round said section, and also adapted to be extended away from the same a predetermined distance and adjustably connected thereto, a top adjustably connected to said casing and adapted to cover the same, and arms pivotally connected to the sides of one part of the casing at one end and pivoted to the top at the other end.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of two separable and extendible sections, an intermediate section surrounded by the first named sections, when the same are not extended, adjustable con necting means joiningsaid three sections, foldable members pivotally mounted on said intermediate section for supporting and carrying a spring bed bottom, grooved segments having recesses attached to the midcIle section, bolts on the said members traversing the grooves and engaging the recesses, a top, and arms pivoted to the top and case at their respective ends to support and guide the top.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a center section, two end sections adjustably connected thereto, extension slides connecting the middle sect-ion and end sections, a top hinged to one of the end sections to cover all of said sections, arms pivoted at one end to the top and pivoted at the other end to one part of the case, members hinged 011 said center section and adapted to be swung from vertical to horizontal position, locking means to lock said members in both vertical and horizontal position, consisting of grooved segments having recesses and bolts traversing the segments and engaging the recesses, and a Wire bed bottom attached to said members and supported thereby.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of an intermediate section, end sections longitudinally adjustable relative to the intermediate section and adjustably connected therewith by means of extension slides at the sides and bottom thereof, said end sections surrounding the intermediate section when brought together, swinging members hinged to the intermediate section, antomatic means for locking said members in vertical or horizontal position consisting of grooved segments having recesses and spring actuated bolts traversing the grooves of the segments and engaging the recesses, stops on said end sections to support the outer ends of said members when in horizontal position, a wire bed bottom fixed to the outer ends of said members and folded or extended thereby, a top to cover said sections when the parts are in closed position, brackets on said top, and arms pivoted at one end to one of the adjustable sections and pivoted to the brackets at the other end.
7 In a device of the class described, the combination of an intermediate section, members hinged on said section and adapted to swing from vertical to horizontal position, locking means to secure said members in said positions, adjustable end sections, interlocking slides fixed on said end sections and intermediate section connecting the same, stops to limit the separating movement of said sections, stops on said end sections to support said hinged members in their horizontal position, a wire bed bottom attached to said hinged members and folded when said hinged members are in verti cal position and extended when the same are in horizontal position, auxiliary springs on said intermediate section to intermediately support said bed bottom, and a top hinged on one of the end sections to engage and cover all of the sections when the device is closed, and means for locking said end sections together In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses:
