Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 11910 Application filed August 12, 1909. Serial No. 512,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE S. WHIPPLE, a resident of Portland, in the county of Jay and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Receptacles for Match-Boxes, Ashes, and the Like; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to receptacles for carrying match boxes, ashes and the like. Its object is to provide a neat and durable device of this nature which combines a base portion adapted to hold burned matches, ashes, cigar stubs, with a match safe removably attached thereto, so that the base portion can be'made of ornamental glass or other breakable material, and can be replaced if broken, without the loss of the match safe proper.
To these ends it consists in the combined construction and improvements hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle showing my invention;
and Fig. 2 is a vertical section partly broken off on the line 2-2 Fig. l.
The base portion or ash receptacle 1 of my device is preferably constructed of glass, which may be suitably ornamented or embellished. provided with the top flanges 3. The end portions 4 extend preferably to only part of the height of the sides 2, leaving the openings 5 into which ashes or cigars or cigarettes can be conveniently put. The flanges 3 also extend preferably. only a portion of the length of the sides 2, thus preferablyleaving the openings 5 at a. convenient angle or slope.
The match safe 7 has the match boxcarrying portion 8 of usual construction, provided preferably with the interior lifting box 9 to partially eject the matches from the ordinary safety match box 10 which fits within theportion 8. The base member 6, upon which the match safe proper is fastened, is provided with the grooves or lips 12 formed by the curved overlapping flanges 13, which are constructed to t the flanges 3 of the ash carrying receptacle 1'.
The match safe proper is constructed pref- It has the sides 2 which arev erably of thin sheet metal, and can be slid conveniently onto the receptacle 1, the flanges 13 registering with the corresponding flanges 3 of the receptacle.
1 thus provide a neat and convenient device which is adapted to carry the ordinary safety match box of standard size, having means for partially ejecting the matches therefrom, and which at the same time can be used in connection with an ornamental receptacle constructed to carry it and ornamented in any desired manner. The match safe 7 may, moreover, be slid along the flanges 3 so as to leave a wider opening at one end of the ash receptacle, for the reception of additional smoked cigars or the like.
What I claim is:
'1. A match carrying receptacle comprising a member having substantially vertical side walls, and end walls extending to only part of the height of said side walls and thereby leaving end openings in. said member, in combination with a match safe slidably attached to said side walls.
2. A match carrying receptacle comprising an ash receiving member having side walls each provided at its top with a longitudinal flange, in combination with a match safe having a bottom portion extending normally across said walls and thereby leaving' an ash chamber beneath it, and being provided with lips adapted to slidably register with said flanges.
3. A. match carrying receptacle comprising a member having sides each provided with a longitudinal flange at its top and having openings at the ends beyond said flanges, and having an ash receptacle between said sides, in combination with a match safe having means to carry a match box and partially eject it, and having a bottom portion provided with lips adapted to slidably engage said flanges of aforesaid member. I
In testimony whereof I, the said CLYDE S. WHIPPLE have hereunto set my hand.
CLYDE S. WHIJPPLE.
