Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 8, 1909. Serial No. 506,465.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADoLrH SGHLESINGER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in shoes, and has for its object the construction of a shoe in which a Congress shoe is provided with Blucher flaps over the instep, so that a shoe of the Congress type may be adjusted over the instep of the foot.

F or the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a perspective of the complete shoe; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of that portion of the shoe over the instep; F ig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the shoe upper and vamp showing the Blucher flaps extended outwardly, to illustrate the construction of shoe tongue; and Fig. t is a like view illustrating the tongue formed integral with the shoe vamp.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: l designates the vamp and 2 the upper.

3 designates a tongue connecting the vamp and upper, the side margins of which are preferably reduced for a portion of their length, to permit ventilation of the foot between the vamp and upper.

Formed integral with the upper is a pair of Blucher flaps 5, provided with eyelets G, which flaps are of a length to cover the instep only.

A lace 7 is inserted through the eyelets 6 in the ordinary manner, and is provided for the adjustment of the upper over the instep. Gores 8 of flexible material are provided in the sides of the upper.

A shoe of this construction is applied to i the foot in the manner common to Congress shoes, and when applied the wearer may adjust the upper over the instep to a neat, comfortable fit by means of the Blucher flaps and lace 7, then secure the lace, and by reason of the iiexibility of the gores 8 the shoe may be removed from or replaced on the foot Without further manipulation of the lace.

By reason of the reduced side margins of the tongue 3 being detached from the upper, air is admitted to and permitted to escape from the shoe when on the foot of the wearer, which ventilates the foot and materially adds to the comfort of the foot.

By the provision of the Blucher liaps to a shoe of the Congress type, I am enabled to produce a shoe which combines the merits of the Congress shoe with its flexible gore to permit the easy applying and removal from the foot with the merits of the Blucher flaps, which provide for the ad justment of the shoe over the instep, which flaps add to the appearance of the Congress shoe.

I claim:

l. A shoe, comprising a vamp portion and an upper portion, the front part of said upper portion formed of a single piece of nonelastic material, a side gore secured to said upper portion, a tongue carried by the vamp, the upper end of said tongue secured to the upper portion and the sides of said tongue being unattached to the shoe so that said tongue conforms to the instep of the wearer, and flaps formed from the same piece of material as the entire front portion of the upper, said flaps capable of being laced over said tongue.

2. A shoe, comprising a vamp portion and an upper portion, the front part of said upper portion formed of a single piece of non elastic material, an elastic side goring secured to said upper portion, one end of which is secured to said vamp portion and the upper end terminating with the upper edge of said upper portion, a tongue carried by the vamp, the upper end of said tongue secured to and carried by the upper portion and the sides of said tongue being .unattached to the shoe so that said tongue conforms to the instep of the wearer and permits ventilation, and aps formed from the same piece of material that constitutes the entire front portion of the upper, said fiaps capable of being laced over said tongue.

3. A shoe, comprising a vamp portion and an upper portion, the said upper portion having a back quarter and a front portion alone formed of a single piece of non-elastic material, a side gore secured to the front portion and the back portion of the upper, a

tongue connecting the vamp and front portion of the upper, the sides of said tongue being unattached to the shoe so that said tongue conforms to the instep of the wearer and maintains the front part of the Vamp in its proper position, and flaps capable of being laced over said tongue, both ends of said flaps being free from the Vamp and upper portion and said flaps -being formed from the same piece of material that constitutes the entire front portion of said upper portion.

A shoe, comprising a Vamp portion and an upper portion, the front partof said up per portion formed of a single piece ofnonelastic material, an elastic side goring secured to said upper portion, a tongue having its ends secured to the vamp portion and the upper portion and maintaining a portion of said Vamp portion against sagging downward, the sides of said tongue being unattached to the shoe and said tongue adjusting itself tothe instep of the lwearer when the shoe is drawn onto the foot, and flaps capable of being laced over said tongue and adjusted substantially throughout the entire length of said tongue, said flaps being formed from the same piece of material as the entire front part of the shoe upper, the lower ends of said flaps being free from the vampvand the upper ends of said flaps being left free from the upper by cutting .a notch in the front portion of the upperadjacent the point where the upper end of the tongue is secured to the front portion of the upper.

5. A shoe, comprising a vamp portion and an upper portion, the front part of said upper portion formed of a single piece of non-elastic material, an elastic side goring secured to said upper portion, a tongue carried by the Vamp, the upper end thereof secured to the upper portion and the sides of said tongue being unattached to the shoe so that said tongue conforms to the instep of the wearer, and flaps capable of being laced over said tongue and adjusted throughout their entire length to the `instep of the wearer, so that when once laced and adjusted the said shoe may be put on and pulled off without unlacing, both ends of said liapsbeing free from the Vamp and upper, .and said flaps being formed from the saine piece of material as the front portion of theupper, the upper ends of said flaps terminating below the point where the upper end of said tongue is secured to said upper.

A shoe, comprising a vamp portion and an upper portion, the upper part of the front portion of the upper being closed, lacing flaps formed from the upper portion, both ends of said flaps being free and the upper ends of said flaps terminating bel-ow the top edge of the upper, a self-adjusting tongue, the lower end of said tongue being secured throughout its entire width to the vamp, the upper end of said tongue being secured throughout its entire width to the upper, and the sides of said tongue being unattached to and free from the shoe, thus providing a tongue which, simultaneously with the putting on of the shoe, adjusts itself throughout its entire width and length to smoothly t the instep of the wearer.

7. A shoe, comprising a Vamp portion and an upper portion, the front part of said upper portion formed of a piece of non-elastic material, an elastic side goring secured to said upper portion, a tongue having its ends secured throughout their width to the vamp portion and the upper portion and maintaining a portion of said vamp portion against sagging downwardly, the sides of said tongue being nnattached to the shoe and said tongue adjusting itself throughout its entire width and length to the instep of the wearer when the shoe is drawn onto the foot, and flaps capable of being laced over said tongue and adjusted substantially throughout their entire length and the entire length of said tongue, the upper ends vof said flaps being left free `from the upper by being spaced apart from the upper front portion of the. upper adjacent the point where the upper y end of the tongue is secured to the frontportion of the upper.

8. A shoe, comprising a vamp portion and an upper portion, the front part of said upper portion being closed and formed of a piece of non-elastic material, an elastic side gering secured to said upper portion, a

ltongue carried by the vamp, the upper end of said tongue secured throughout its width to the upper portion and maintaining a portion of said vamp portion against sagging downwardly, the sides of said tongue being' unattached tothe shoe and said tongue adjusting itself throughout its entire width and length to the instep of the wearer when the shoe is drawn onto the foot, and flaps capable of being fastened over said tongue and adjusted substantially throughout their entire length and the length of said tongue, the upper ends ot' said flaps being left free from the upper by being spaced apart from the front portion of the upper adjacent the point where the upper end of the tongue is securedtofthe front portion of the upper.
