DEVICE FOR OPERATING BLINDS.
esaoce.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Bonnwroz, a sub ect of the Emperor of Russia, and resil The sill is suitably recessed as at 12 (see F gs. 1 and 3) to receive and guide the slides 13 and 14: both of which are provided frame and 11 the apron therefor which is 29 and its shaft, as shown in the drawings.
dent of Union City, in the county of New with a rack 15 upon their outer end portions Haven and State of Connecticut, have in- 1 to engage gears 16 upon vertically disposed vented certain new and useful Improvei pintle shafts 17 mounted within the sill and ments in Devices for Operating Blinds, of having their upper shouldered end portions which the following is a specification. 18 projecting through a bearing bracket 19 My invention relates to stationary means upon the top of the sill for the engagement for operating blinds on buildings from the of a corresponding shouldered socket in inside without opening the windows and hinge 20 secured to blinds 21. The inner likewise for holding and locking such blinds end portions of the slides 18 and 1a are also in a partially opened or partially closed poj provided with rack 22 for the engagement sition. j of an idler pinion 23 mounted upon a verti- It is the purpose of the devi e to onstru t cally disposed bearing 2d secured within the a blind opener which ay be entirely inj window sill before mentioned. The slide 1i closed within the window sill and easing, is further provided with a rack 25 upon its except the handle and extended pintles for top side to be engaged by a pinion 26 secured the blinds, thereby better protecting the to the cross shaft 27 having its end portion mechanism from the elements of the weather projecting out on the inside of the casing and insuring a rigid and durable connection thr ugh he apron before mentioned and and guide way for the engagement and o likewise through a central portion of a eration of the parts. notched circular plate 28 secured to the face It is a further object of the invention to of the said apron. An operating arm 29 is connect both blinds in a manner to be opersecured to the outer end of the said shaft 27 ated simultaneously and conveniently. j whereby the same together with its gear 26 is Further objects of the invention will hererotated thus transmitting movement to the inafter appear; and to these ends the invenslide 14 which in turn through its rack 22 tion consists of a device for carrying o t imparts movement to the idler 23 and thence the above objects, embodying the f ature of to the rack 18. This line of connections obconstruction, combination of elements, and viously insures a simultaneous movement of arrangement of parts having the general the two racks in either an inner or outer dimode of operation, substantially as h reinrection according to the way the handle and after fully described and claimed in the shaft is turned and said slides through their specification and as shown in the accomrack and gear connections 15 and 16 will in panying drawings in which, a like manner swing the blinds in or out ac- Figure 1, shows a sectional plan view cording to the movement of the slides therethrough a window casing fitted with my imby enabling an attendant to completely open proved blind operating device, which toor close the blinds by the manipulation of gether with the blinds are indicated in an the handle, or if desired to adjust them to intermediate position. Fig. 2, is an enj an intermediate position. The blinds may larged detail elevation of a part of a blind, be locked in such intermediate position window casing, etc. showing the detachable through the medium of a spring actuated hinge connection of the blind with one of j pin 80 mounted within the operating handle the pintles of my operating device. Fig. 8, l 31 and designed to engage the several is a central vertical sectional view taken notches in the plate 28, it being apparent on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. From the foregoing it will be seen that all,
pinions, racks, shaft and operative parts are entirely inclosed within the sill of the frame I and are therefore protected from the weather in a way to insure their ready operation at all times.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device for operating window blinds from the inside, comprising a pair of slidable racks located in the window sill, an; idler gear connecting the racks, a separate I gear connected with each of the racks and I having an outwardly disposed shouldered pintle for the attachment of a blind, a fourth gear connected with a separate rack on one of the slidable racks, an operating shaft for said gear, an operating arm mounted upon the shaft, a notched disk secured to the window frame for the engagement of the arm whereby the parts may be secured in any desired position.
