CHARLES H. WILLIAMS, JR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHICAGO RAILWAY EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
REINFORCED BRAKE-HEAD FOR SOLID BEAMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. WILLIAMS, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Reinforced Brake-Heads for Solid Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top plan view, partly in section, of one form of reinforced head. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a slightly modified form of head. Figs. 3 and i are plan views, partly in section, of other modified forms of head.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in reinforced brake heads for solid beams.
Solid beams, whose ends are reduced by the removal of a portion of the web or flange, suffer from torsional strains imposed upon them by the uneven wearing of the shoes. By reinforcing the head, as shown in the several forms of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the ends of the beam are prevented from being twisted around when the brakes are applied, the extensions on the head not only giving the head a solid support on the beam and strengthening the head, but also strengthening the beam at its weakest point, to-wit: where the metal has been cut away or removed. This cutting away of the metal at the ends of the beam, or reducing the depth of the beam at its ends, is made necessary in certain types of brakes where the space in which the beam may be hung is limited.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown, in Fig. 1, a bulb T-angle 1 whose flanges have been cut away at the ends to permit the brake head 2 to be inset. The brake head is secured in position to the web of the beam by means of rivets 3 passing through its rearwardly extending flange.
4 is an extension, preferably formed integral with the brake head, projecting inwardly from the side face thereof, in front of, and around the front flange of the beam member. This extension not only gives a more extended bearing area for the brake head upon the beam and adds rigidity to Specification of Letters Patent.

the head, butalso strengthens the beam at the weakened ends.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a beam member in which a portion of the web at the end has been removed, the flanged ends of the beam being pressed together. In this form, the lateral extension at from the brake head is considerably longer than is shown in Fig. 1, the extreme inner end of said extension embracing the flange of the beam.
In Fig. 3 the extension t is shaped to reinforce the web of the beam and to also embrace the front fianges thereof, which flanges are cut away some distance inside of the head.
In Fig. & the front flange and web of the beam have been cut away on a taper, the brake head and reinforcing extension t being shaped to accommodate this taper, the reinforcing extension embracing the front flange and strengthening the weakened web of the beam.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts of my invention can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim is:
1. The combination with the main member of a solid brake beam, and a brake head having a reinforcing extension embracing a portion of the beam member.
2. The combination of a flanged main member of a solid brake beam and a brake head having a reinforcing extension embracing the front flange of said beam member.
3. The combination of a flanged main member of a solid brake beam and a brake head having a reinforcing extension embracing the web of said beam member.
4. The combination of a flanged main member of a solid brake beam and a brake head having a reinforcing extension embracing the front flange and web of said beam member.
5. The combination of a beam member whose end is reduced or made shallow, and a brake head having a reinforcing member for Istrengthening the reduced portion of the earn.
6. The combination of a flanged beam In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my member whose end 1s weakened by portions signature in the presence of two Witnesses cut away for the purpose of maklng sald this 26th day of May, 1909.
