To all whom it may concern.:

Be it known that we, MAX P. HERMANN and CHARLES H. VVoLri, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Surgeons and Physicians Case, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a new and useful surgeons and physicians case which is small and compact and which oontainsmeans for carrying and supporting suitable instruments.

It further consists of a new and useful lock for the parts.

It further consists of a leaf pivotally connected with the casing which is adapted to hold, upon opposite sides thereof, the instruments or medicines desired.

It further consists of novel means for mounting a thermometer.

It further consists of a novel holder or handle for the instruments with means for connecting the latter therewith.

It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of a surgeons and physicians case embodying our invention showing one side thereof. Fig. 2 represents a plan view showing the leaf upon the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1, with some of the knives shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of the casing in closed position. Fig. 4C represents a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 represents a sectional view of a portion of the device showing` the carrying means for the knives. Fig. 6 represents a sectional view of a portion of the device showing the manner of mounting the thermometer, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 7 represents a portion of the device in detached position, showing a portion of the slide for the catch or lock, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 8 represents a sectional view of a holder or4 handle with a knife held in position.

Referring to the drawings. Owing to the size and construction of physicians cases now in use it is diiiicult to have the same always at hand. Our invention is designed Speccation of Letters Patent.

to overcome this defect and to provide a small and compact case which contains the necessary implements and medicines and which can be carried in the pocket at all times ready for use.

In the drawings, we have shown a construction for carrying out our invention but it will be evident that the arrangement of the parts may be varied and other instrumentalities may be employed which will come within the scope of our invention and we do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact form as herein shown and described but desire to make such changes as may be necessary.

1 and 2 designate lids or covers which form the casing of the device and which are suitably pivoted together, while pivotally mounted to lit the casing covers is a leaf 3, which can be moved freely with respect to the covers so that access to either' side of the said leaf may be had. It will be understood that the covers or casing as well as the leaf are formed of suitable material such as metal, so that the entire case can be subjected to a sterilizing agent without injury to any of the parts and it being further understood that the leaf isof preferably heavier material than that composing the covers so that the leaf will be capable of carrying and supporting the instruments or other articles, as may be desired. The said leaf is bent into suitable shape to form substantially compartments to accommodate the articles and referring more particularly to the position of the saine, as seen in Fig. 4, it will be noted that the leaf isbent downwardly at I1, upwardly at 5, downwardly at G, and extends horizontally at 7 in a plane substantially in line with the pivotal point of the covers and leaf and is bent upwardly at 8 and extends horizontally at 9 while the edge 10 thereof is turned angularly at a suitable point forining a flange or guide for reasons to be hereinafter' described. i

At suitable points on the leaf, we mount clips or other suitable means for engagement with the articles to Vbe carried, the clips 11 in the present instance engaging with a bottle 12 while the clips 13 support a hypodermic syringe 14, it being noted that this syringe is seated in the compartment or depressed portion a of the leaf. Other clips 15 are provided at suitable points on this side of the leaf for the reception of bottles or other articles, as may be desired. The compartment or depression G is formed for the reception of a physiciaihermometer and has access to the exterior of the casing at all times with means for securing the thermometer therein and in the drawings, 1G designates a sleeve 0r collar which is suitably connected with the leaf preferably in the depression 6 thereof and the bore of which is preferably threaded and is adapted to receive a threaded head 17 which has connected therewith or carries, the physicians thermometer 1S, it being understood that the Wall of the casing is cut away as at 19 to accommodate the sleeve or collar 1G so that the head 17 of the thermometer when in position projects beyond the casing and can be removed from engagement with the collar Without opening the casing, so that the thermometer, which is carried thereby, can be removed and inserted in the casing without disturbing the other parts. Upon the opposite side of the leaf, we provide a plurality of clips 20 'which are adapted to receive tubes, bottles or instruments, as may be necessary, and hold the same securely in position, it being understood that these articles are suitably seated with respect to the depressions and the horizontally extendingl portions of the leaf, in order that the article will be accommodated in the space provided. Upon the inner front wall of the covers 1 and 2, we provide eyes 21-21 and respectively,`the situation of these on the covers will be best understood from Fig. 3.

23 designates a slide or bar which is provided with suitable means for engagement with the flange 10 on the leaf so that the latter serves as a guide for the slide in its movement.

24 designates pins or bolts which extend in one direction from the slide and are adapted at the proper time to engage with the eyes 21 of the cover 1.

25 designates pins or bolts which extend from the slide 23 in the opposite direction fi'om that of the pins 24, said pins 25 being adapted to engage with the eyes 22 of the cover 2.

26 designatesV a handle or other grasping means which extends beyond the walls of the covers 1 and 2 and is movable in a suitable slot 27 formed therein so that said slide 23 can be moved in either direction by the operator, it being noted more particularly Afrom Fig. 3 that when the handle is substantially in the center of the slot 27 that the pins 24 are seated in the eyes 21 while the pins 25 are seated in the eyes 22 so that both covers are locked. By sliding' t-he handle 2G in one direction, as for example to the right of Fig. 3, the pins 24 are removed from engagement with the eyes 21 and the lid or cover l can be raised and access to that side of the pins 25 remaining in engagement with the eyes 22 can be had, while if the handle 2G is moved into the opposite direction, that is, to the left of Fig. 2:3, the pins 25 are re,- leased from engagement with the eyes 22 so that the cover 2 is rel `ased and access to that side of the leaf can be had, while the pins 24 remain in engagement with the eyes 21, it being understood that in both inst anees the opposite cover, from that released, is held in locked position.

The lid or cover 1 .is provided with pinsI 2S between which and the walls of the casing can be seated a rubber tube 2n, as best understood from Fig. 1. Pivotally mounted within the cover 2 and at the opposite endsl thereof are the frames at) and 31 which, iu the present instance, are shown liivotally mounted upon the pins 32, said frames being provided with the lugs or projections 3?, upon the inner wall thereof and with the openings 34 in the outer wall adjacent which are the clips 35, which are preferably ol suitable spring material in order to torni a grasping means, it being understood that the ends of the knives Bti are pressed through the openings 34 and a lug 3?) is seated within the opening in the end of said knives. while the spring lips 35 engage with said knives 3G to hold the same in position in the frames., it being understood that a suitable spring catch 37 is provided for normally holding the frames in position, as seen in Fig. 2. but that by releasing the spring catch 37 either of the frames can be raised in order to remove the knives therefrom. Seated in the depression 8 in the leaf is the knife handle 3S which is preferably made hollo and otl `two telescopic parts and for the reception ot" needles St) or other articles which may he placed therein and said handle is provided with a stopper 40 for preventii-ig accidental escape of the articles. One end of one of the handles is provided with a cam 4l and an operating pin 42, whereby said cam can be actuated.

The end of the knife 3G is provided with an opening 43 and within thel end is secured a spring 44, it being understood that when the end of the knife 3G is slipped into the handle 3S the cam having been tirst moved by moving the pin 42 in the direction indicated in Fig. 2, so that the cam At1 is removed from the path of the knife. but as soon as the latter is in its proper position in the handle, by the proper movement of the pin 42, the cam 41 is caused to enter the opening 43 in the knife 3G depressing the spring 4l so that said cam engages the walls of the opening and the spring prevents accidental movement of the cam, so that; the said knife 3G will be tirmly held in position in the handle.

apparent. The case is filled with articles and medicines as may be most desirable for the purpose of the physician or surgeon, such as knives, bottles containing medicines, hypodermic syringe or means for carrying thread, gauze, court plaster etc. `When the covers are closed and locked, as in Fig. 3, the case can be conveniently carried in the pocket and described the thermometer can be removed and replaced in the -case without opening the same. When it is desired to have access to the articles upon one side of the leaf, as for example, the hypodermic syringe, the handle 26 is moved to the right, as in Fig. 3, releasing the eyes 21 and the cover 1 can be opened into the position seen in Fig. 1, the leaf and cover' 2 being` held locked with respect to each other but should it be necessary to have access to the other side of the leaf the operating handle 2G is moved to the left, as in Fig. 3, thus releasing the cover 2, which can be opened into the position seen in Fig. 2. By reason of the clips, the bottles or instruments can be quickly removed and replaced in position on the leaf and by releasing the catch 37 the frames 30 and 31 can be elevated and the knives or other instruments removed therefrom. The handle 38 can be taken from the case and one of the knives or instruments quickly inserted in place and held therein as described. In Fig. l, we have shown one side, as for example, the cover 1, as formed with a curve or depression which adapts itself to the shape of the body of the operator when the case is carried in the pocket.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. 1n a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a pivoted leaf therebetween, and pins projecting from the inner wall of one of the covers at the corners thereof and between which and the edge thereof an article is adapted to be held.

:2. In a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a pivoted leaf therebetween, a slide movably mounted on said leaf to engage means on one cover to lock the same with respect to the leaf, and means actuated in the opposite direction to engage with means on the other cover to lock the same with respect to the leaf.

3. 1n a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a pivoted leaf therebetween, a slide movably mounted on said leaf to engage means on one cover to lock the same with respect to the leaf, means actuated in the opposite direction to engage with means on the other cover to lock the same with respect to the leaf, and means whereby the ends intermediate the opposite leaf lock both covers with respect to the leaf.

4. 1n a device of the character' described,

pivoted covers, a pivoted leaf therebetween and a slidingly mounted double acting lock carried by said leaf, and means extending in one direction from the leaf to engage means on one cover, and means on the opposite side of the leaf to engage means on the other cover to lock the leaf to either cover or in the intermediate position of said leaf to lock both covers.

5. In a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, a slide carried by said leaf, pins extending in opposite directions from said slide, and eyes on said covers with which said pins are adapted to engage.

6. 1n a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, a slide carried by said leaf movable thereon, pins extending in opposite directions from said slide, and eyes carried by said covers and so situated with respect to said pins that in one position thereof both covers are locked and when moved in one direction or the other, one or the other of said covers is locked with respect to said leaf.

7. 1n a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, a slide carried by said leaf movable thereon, pins extending in opposite directions from said slide, eyes carried by said covers and 9 so situated with respect to said pins that in one position thereof, both covers are locked, and when moved in one direction or the other, one or the other of said covers is locked with respect to said leaf, and an operating handle for actuating said slide exterior of said covers.

8. 1n a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween with its pivot parallel with the pivot of the covers, a plurality of compartments formed in said leaf, one of which has access to the exterior of the casing and means for loching an article in said compartment.

9. 1n a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, a compartment formed in said leaf having access to the exterior of the covers, and a threaded sleeve suitably secured with respect to said compartment whereby an article can be held therein and can be removed and inserted without opening the covers.

10. In a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, a compartment formed in said leaf having access to the exterior of said covers, a threaded sleeve suitably supported, and a thermometer having threads thereon adapted to engage with the threads of said sleeve with a portion thereof held exterior of said covers.

11. 1n a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, and frames pivoted to one of said covers and seated between said covers and said leaf and slidable means for locking,l all of said covers or for locking one or the other of said covers with relation to Said leaf.

12. In a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, pivoted frames carried by one of said covers and seated between the saine and Said leaf', slidable means for locking all of Said covers or for locking one or the other of said covers with relation to said leai` and a catch for each frame holding the same in proper position.

13. In a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, a fra-me pivoted to one of said covers, slidable means for locking all of Said covers or for locking one or the other of said covers with relation to said leaf and means on said frame for locking` an article therein.

14. In a device of the character described, pivoted covers, a leaf pivoted therebetween, a traine pivoted to one of Said covers having openings therein and adapted to receive articles, lugs projecting,- from Said frame and adapted to be seated in an openingin said article and a spring lip for engagement with the article for holdingl the Same with respect to Said traine.
