citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and4 State of Connecticut? have invented an finiprovement in Shuttles for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a speciticati'on. My invention of an improvement in shuttles for sewing machines relates particularly to the bohbin case and the means 'forming part thereof for engaging the thread hobhin and retaining the same during use within -the hohbin case an( applying friction fior tension 4Whether or not the said devices are accompanied bythe presence ot the bohhin case holder or hook-device. ln the device of my invention, the stem of 'the bohbin case is provided at its free end with a. circumferential Bange or shoulder and a. sleeve surrounds said stem freely but .not loosely, This sleeve is at its inner end preferably provided with e eircnni erential shoulder or narrow tia/nge and a spring ot suitable form and character occupies a position Within the hobhin case and -hears respectively against the hobhin case and the inner end face of the sleeve to force the sleeve foi" 'ard against the retaining' shoulder on the reeend ot the stein and ei'i'ect a retarding` friction against a too rapid rotation of the sleeve and thread hohbin. The stein is preferably longitudinally slit for the passage to its place of the sleeve.

The external diameter oi? the sleeve agrees substantially with the internal. diameter et the core ot' the thread hobhin which for use forced over the sleeve and held. trictionally in position; the flange of the sleeve preventinfnr 'forcing the thread bohhin too far. TWhen the thread ot the hohhin is used up the core is quickly removed and anew thread hohbin put in position.
