LATHE TOOL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
cutting tool in the desired operative posi-' tion.
In tool holders of the class to which my invention relates, as heretofore constructed,a threaded member has been employed for making direct contact with the tool and cooperating with another threaded member for binding or clamping the tool inthe desired.
position. Insuch constructions considerable trouble has been encountered by reason of the threaded member, having direct contact with the tool, binding or becoming wedged in the internally cooperating threaded member due'to the great strain to which the externally and internally threaded members are subjected. In practice, it frequently happens that the threaded tool contacting or engagingmember becomes wedged in the threaded member in which it is inserted, thus necessitating considerable labor to remove the threaded wedged member.
Anobject of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient tool holder and binding or clamping means that will obviate the disadvantages above mentioned of tool holders employing a threaded tool engaging member.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a tool holder comprising an unthreaded tool engaging member or plunger and cooperating means for forcing the tool engaging member into contact with the tool and maintaining it in engagement therewith.
'In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates applications of my invention; Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a holder embodying my invention, shown in connection with a portion of a lathe; Fig. 2, a part elevational view and a part sectional View, the section being taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a top plan of the form of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a part elevational view and a part sectional view of a modified form of my invention shown in connection with a portion of a turret-lathe.
Referring to the drawing and first to the form of Fig. 1, 1 designates the body-portion of my improved tool holder, said bodyportion being shown in the form of a toolpost. The body-portion comprises a hollow cylindrical member having a central unthreaded bore 2, an externally threaded upper portion 3, disposed on the lower end thereof. Said and an .annular flange 4 Patented Feb. 20,1912. Application filed March 15, 1911. Serial No. 614,537. 7
flange 41 is adapted to be entered in a groove 5 of a lathe portion 6. The body 1 is further provided with a laterally extending tool receiving slot'7 for a tool as 8.
Designed to cooperate with the externally threaded upper portion of the body, I provide an internal-1y threaded cap 9 having its threads 10 adapted to engage the threads 11 of the said upper portion of the body. Cap 9 is preferably of the form shown and has formed integral, therewith a nut 12.
Having a portion located within the hollow cap 9 and extending downwardly therefrom into the bore 2 of the body 1 is a separable member or plunger 13. Plunger 13 as illustrated and as preferred comprises a central cylindrical portion having on the upper end thereof an annular head 14, and on the lower end thereof a contracted projecting member 15, the latter being designed to make contact with the cutting tool .8.
' 16 designates the usual ring or gib em loyed in tool holders of this class-and is designed to. support the tool 8. as clearl shown by the drawing when the tool is clamped in operative position by the member 13. 1
From the foregoing it will be noted that I dispense with a threaded tool binding or clamping member and provide in place thereof a separable loose member free of threads androther parts liable to be injuredin clamping the tool on the ringlfi, also that said member,13 is well adapted to take care of all the strains, etc., to which it is subjected in practice, and, further there is no liability of its becoming-bound or wedged in its inclosure.
In the form of Fig. 1, I have shown a modified form of my invention particularly designed to be usedin connection with a turret-lathe. In this latter embodiment of my invention, 17 designates a portion of a turret to which'the tool holder is secured and in this form of my invention the bodyportion or hollow standard l is formed with a bearing member or nut 18 and a lower threaded portion 19, the latter being adapted to be entered in an internally threaded opening 20 of the turret. In additionto the elements just mentioned, the body is formed with a central unthreaded bore 2 and with an externally threaded upper portion 3 corresponding With 2 and 3 of the form of Fig. l. The remaining parts namely the member 13 and the cap 9 and the operation thereof are substantially the same as in the form of Fig. 1. The cap 9 m this latter form is shown provided with an oil passage 21 designed. for the purpose of introducing oil to the head of the member 13 if desirable.
What I claim is:
1. In a tool holder, the combination of an externally threaded member or body having a smooth bore, an internally threaded member cooperating with the externally threaded member or body, and a separable unthreaded tool-olampii'ig member adapted to make direct contact With the tool, said separable member arranged in the bore of the body and projecting into the externally threaded member.
- 2. in a tool holder, the combination or" an externally threaded member or body having a smooth bore, an internally threaded cap cooperating with the externally threaded member or body, and a separable loose toolclamping member adapted to make direct contact with the tool, said separable member arranged in the bore of the body and projecting into the cap.
3.110 a tool holder, the combination of a body or standard having an upper externally threaded portion and an unthreaded bore, an internally threaded cap cooperating with the threaded body or standard, and tool binding means comprising a separable plunger adapted to make direct contact with the tool, said plunger arranged in the bore of the body or standard and projecting into the cap.
4. In a lathe tool holder, the combination with a support, of an externally threaded member or body having a central unthreaded bore, an internally threaded cap cooperating with the externally threaded body, and a separable unthreaded tool-clamping member adapted to be moved into binding engagement with the tool by the movement of the cap on the body. p
5. In a lathe tool holder, the combination with a support, of a body or standard having engaging means at its lower end, an upper externally threaded portion and a smooth bore, an internally threaded cap 00- operating with the externally threaded portion of the body, and a separable toolclamping plunger adapted to be brought into binding engagement with a tool by the movement of the cap on the body.
6. In a tool holder, the combination of an externally threaded member or body having a smooth bore, an internally threaded cap cooperating with the externally threaded member or body, and a separable tool binding member provided with a head, said member having a portion located in the smooth bore of the body and its head in the cap.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
