To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, FANNIE VVoLF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment-Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to certain improvements in garment hangers, and more particularly to means for supporting the hanger in such a way that it may freely rotate, and at the same time may be readily removed from its support.

The present application is a division of application, Serial Number 486,658, filed March 30, 1909, and also of application Serial Number 466,075, filed December 5, 1908.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a garment rack having the hangers supported in accordance with my invention; Fig. Qis a section through a hanger supported from the wall by one form of my improved supporting means; Fig. 3 is a modified form supported from the under surface of a shelf or the like; and Fig. 4 illustrates a further modified form supported from a side wall.

My improved supporting means for garment hangers may be utilized with any suitable form of hanger, and is designed to suspend the hanger from any suitable form of overhead support.

In Fig. 1, I have illustrated a garment rack in which there is provided a standard 10, mounted upon a base 11 and rotatably supporting an annular member 12 at its upper end. The annular member is connected to a sleeve 13 on the standard by a series of brackets 14, so that the member may rotate, and the member is constructed to support a series of hangers along its length. The specific annular member illustrated is in the form of a tube with a series of openings or a slot along the under side thereof, down through which extend a plurality of depending rods 15. These rods are provided with heads 16 at their upper ends, movable along the tube as set forth and claimed in my application, Serial Number 486,658 above referred to. Each rod at its lower end supports a hanger Specification of Letters Patent.

17 of any suitable form. The specific hanger illustrated at the left-hand side of the rack shown in Fig. l, is merely a straight rod adapted. to support skirts and provided with studs or pins 18 at its outer ends for receiving the loops on the waist-band of the skirt. The hanger 17 shown at the right-hand side of Fig. 1, is curved to support a coat or jacket, and its under side is provided with hooks 18 to receive the loops of skirts.

The main feature of my present invention relates to the means for detachably and rotatably securing the hangers to the depending rods. These depending rods need not necessarily be supported at their upper ends from a garment rack, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

In 2, I have shown a rod 15 provided with an enlarged head 19 at its upper end and extending through a vertical opening in a bracket 20, the bracket being screwed or otherwise secured. to the Wall of a room, wardrobe, cabinet or the like.

In Fig. 3, I have illustrated a rod 15 having one end provided with screw threads and adapted to be screwed into the lower surface of a shelf, ceiling or other overhead support, so that the rod will depend there from.

In Fig. 4, I have illustrated a rod 15 having one end provided with screw threads to facilitate its being secured to a side wall, and the outer end of the rod is bent at an angle to the body portion, so as to depend therefrom.

Each hanger is provided with a sheet v metal thimble 21,having its base portion secured to the upper surface of the hanger intermediate the ends of the latter. Each thimble is provided with an opening 22 in the side thereof and a slot 23 extending from the opening to the apex of the thimble. Each rod 15 is provided with an enlarged head 24, of substantially the same size and shape as the opening 22 in the side of the thimble and of greater diameter than the slot 23. The slot is of substantially the same width as the diameter of the body of the rod. The slot and opening is substantially in the form of an inverted keyhole, so that the hanger may freely rotate about the rod as a center, but cannot be removed therefrom without its first being lifted up and the head 24- passed out through the opening 22. The head illustrated in Fig. 2 is substantially spherical in form, and the thimble is substantially hemi-spherical or dome shaped. In Figs. 3 and 4, I have illustrated the rods as having heads 24* and 24", respectively, in the form of simple screwheads, and I have illustrated the openings 22 and 22* as being of substantially the same shape as the heads of the rods. The thimbles need not necessarily be circular in cross section.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination, a rod, means for supporting the rod in a depending position, said rod having anenlarged head atits lower end, and a garment hanger having a hollow thimble secured thereto and provided with a keyhole slot in the side thereof, to permit the admission of said head to the interior of said thimble.

2. In combination, a depending rod having an enlarged head at its lower end, means for supporting said rod at its upper end, a garment hanger, and a hollow member secured to the latter intermediate its ends and having an opening in the side thereof to receive said head, and having a slot extending from said. opening to the apex of the member.

3. In combination, a garment hanger, an overhead support, and means for detachably and removably securing said hanger to said support, said means including a rod having a head on one end thereof, and a thilnble having a keyhole slotin the side thereof, to receive said head.

4. The combination with a hanger rod having a ball thereon, of a supporting our, and a cup at the upper side thereof and having a socket to receive the ball of the hanger rod, an entrance opening for the introduction of said ball, and a contracted slot leading upwardly from said entrance opening, substantially as set forth.

5. A garment supporting bar provided at its upper side with a ball socket, and a hanger rod having a ball to cooperate with said socket and movable freely into and out of the said socket, substantially as set forth.

6. A clothes hanger substantially as described, comprising a hanger rod having a ball thereon, a supporting bar, and a cup on the supporting 1a and having a socket receiving the ball of the hanger rod.
