MARTINE. LINEBACK, or" GREENFIELD', INDIANA.
LettersiPctent No. 95,120, dated September 21, 1869..
` IMPRovED Ienormes-LINE FAS-TENER.
The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent making .part of the same;
t Beit known that I, MARTIN H. Limmen," of
i Greentieldfinthe eountyof Hancock, and State of In diana, have invented a neWian'd useful Improvement in Clothes-Line Fasteners; and that-the following is a sufficiently .fulhand exact description therof to ena-` ble one' skilled in the art to`` which my iuvention'appertains to carryit into elicot, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, lwhich form` part of this specification.
The subject of my invention is a clothes-line fastener and eifectivenessin a superior' degree..
i It consists of a flange Vortable of peculiar construction, adapted to be rigidlyattached to'the post or other support, and a dog attached to the post or: other support, in suitable relative position to the table, by a single screw, which thus forms its pivot. The line is held by being drawn over this table, between it and the dog, which l'atter prevents .any retrogade movement by jammingV Iit against the surface ofthe table.
Both of the parts are double, and the device is thus adapted for application at either end of a line,
and to either a right or left-hand surface.
,i In the drawingse- Figure 1 represents an elevation of my improved fastener applied to a wall, and employed to vsecurea lfigures 2 and 3, perspective views of the respective parts detached.` i i v 'A represents theange or table; 1 1- its double-in clined top; 2, a ange on its outer edgefor the retention of the line thereon; 3 3, sockets for the reception wof the end `of the liuc, to prevent its accidental displacement; and 4,' 4,' perforated lugs on its under side for the reception of its attaching screws.
B-represents `the dog; 5, a'perforation therein for the reception of its pivotal attaching-screw; 6'6, its
`legs or levers; 7V 7, feet or enlargements provided on the ends of the legs 6, to increase their bearing-surface 8 8, grooves or corrugations inthe faces ofthe enlargements? of `the legs V(i, to iucreasetheir hold on the4V line. i t,
The parts A B may be constructed of substantially "the `form represented in the drawings, preferably by i casting from malleable iron, and, for use, are attached to the fiat surface Vof a post `or wall, iniabout the rel'-` ative position represented in iig. l, (being capable of inversion,) by means of screws, C C D, or other suitable fastening, the pivotal screw D, of the vdog B, be
ing arranged at such a distance above- (or below)the` apex of the surface 1,1, of the table A, as that, when engaging with the line on said table, itshall not be 1 'capable of being drawn over said apex.- 'vertically-l elongated slots, for-the reception of either or-.all of the screws O C D, may adapt the proximity ofthe parts to be adjusted, to adapt the fastener for ditferent thicknessesof lines. f i E, (g.'1,)rerresents the clothes-line, which requires no provision whatever, but is held by being drawnover the table A, andthe leg 6, on the far side of the dog B, brought into contact therewith, When the tension ofthe line drawing thereon will tend to bring its bearing-'surface into closer .proximity to that o'f the table, thusjamming it there between," and securely holding it. In tightening theline, the dog will raise to permit its-forward movement, and automatically engage with itfto prevent retrogression, the leg of the dog not immediately engaging with theline serving in this' case to prevent atoo great elevation of the other, and thus sec-'ure its action. erallyvupon the table, and the extensions ofthe bearing-surface of the dog secure its engagement thereby. For further security against displacement from between thebearing-snrfaces of the dog and table, its
end may be drawn into the 'socket 3 atthe far end of the table, the contracted entranceto which will suiciently retain it.
` But one end of the table and one leg of the dog are necessarily used in securing a line.. The double provision, as will be readily understood, adapts it to be applied at either end of 'a line, and to either a-right or.
v 6, 7, 8, constructed as shown and described, adapted for attachment to a post or other support, by means "of screws C C D, and to operatev in combination, substautially as' and for the purpose set forth.
` To the above specification of my invention, l have signed my' hand, this 28th day of J une,- 1869.
MARTIN H. LINEBACK.
