TOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GRoPrER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in tops and has particular reference to the peg of the top and has for its object the construction of a strong and serviceable peg of few parts adapted to retain a ball in the end as a spinning surface.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of a peg illustrating an application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical side elevation of such a peg and Fig. 3 a view looking upwardly at Fig. 2.
at is the body of the peg and 5 the stem or spindle of the same provided with a shoulder 7 having a beveled periphery. The body 4 of the peg is also provided with a central hole or bore adapted to receive the stem 5, said bore being restricted at the extremity to provide a seating for the ball 6. In assembling the peg the ball is inserted through the top of the peg and falls upon said seating or restriction at the extremity of the same, part of the curvature of the ball extending therethrough. The stem is now inserted through the bore and is prevented from bearing upon the ball by the shoulder 7. When in this position the body of the peg is placed in a suitable tool and the metal of the body of the peg is forced against the beveled periphery of the shoulder 7 thereby securely locking the combination together and leaving the peg completed ready to be introduced into the body of the top.

Of course. it will be readily understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a top, a peg comprising a body portion, said body portion having a bore pro vided with a restricted opening, a ball adapted to be retained within said restricted opening and protruding therethrough and a stem adapted to be locked within said bore and being adapted to hold said ball in position.
2. In a top, a peg comprising a body portion, said body portion having a bore provided with a restricted opening, a ball adapted to be retained within said restricted opening and protruding therethrough and a stem provided with a shoulder, said stem being adapted to hold said ball in position and said shoulder being adapted to interlock with the body of said peg.
3. In a top, a peg comprising a body portion, said body portion having a bore provided with a restricted opening, a ball adapted to be retained within said restricted opening and protruding therethrough and a stem provided with a shoulder, said stem being adapted to hold said ball in position and said shoulder being provided with a beveled periphery, and said body of said peg being adapted to be forced upon said beveled periphery of said shoulder and interlock therewith.
