Specification of Letters Patent. Patented litany. 1t, 1910 Original application filed September 16, 1908, Eerial No. 153,323.
Divided and this application filed February 4, 1909. Serial No. 476,101.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALnnn'r VVANNER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in Hoboken, Hudson county, New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to chairs, and par ticularly to bent-wood chairs having, instead of the usual ring-brace for supporting the legs, a brace of the type shown in the U. S. Letters Patent No. 819,478, the object being to strengthen the chair, generally, and reinforce the back legs in particular, especially against the tendency to loosen from the seat or back under sidewise or twisting strains. The invention is not limited in its application to chairs of the kind particularly set forth above, however, being appli' cable also to other types of chairs, as will be obvious.
The invention will be found. fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the improved chair as seen from the front thereof, certain parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of another form of the improved chair as seen from the front thereof.
Referring, first, to Fig. 1, the chair comprises the seat a, the front legs I), and the arched bent-wood back and back-leg structure c, the same being secured together in the usual manner; the chair also preferably comprises a brace (Z in the form of a single (preferably) piece of wood secured to the front legs, seat and back-legs and so bent as to produce the substantially straight middle portion 6, connecting the front legs, and the upwardly arched end-portions f, each con necting a front and a back-leg and bearing against the under side of the seat.
In carrying out my invention 1 provide a bracing structure which takes against the back legs below the seat and rigidly sustains them against movement toward each other and which lies substantially wholly in approximately the same plane as the back and baclcleg structure. In the figure of the drawing now being referred to, this bracing structure comprises an inverted U- shaped member 9 which is attached at its upper end to the top of the back and backleg structure and which depends at its lower ends below the seat. It also comprises a horizontal member or crosspiece It into which the lower ends of the member 9 may be doweled or to which they may be otherwise secured and which connects the legs of the back and back-leg structure below the seat, being doweled into or otherwise secured to them. The bracing structure comprising the members 9 and it being secured at its lower end to the back legs below the seat and rigidly maintaining them apart and be ing also secured to the back and back-leg structure above the seat, the back-legs are supported against movement toward each other under sidewise or twisting strains imposed upon the chair, said structure in particular is reinforced and strengthened and the chair in general made strong and durable, yet light, and graceful and attractive in appearance.
In Fig. 2 the back and arched back-leg structure comprises the separate vertical pieces 2' and horizontal toppiece j connecting the parts a at the top; the seat 71, front legs Z and brace m are substantially the same as the parts a, Z) and d in Fig. 1. The bracin structure in this instance comprises the vertical spindles a which are suitably secured to the top-piece j at their upper ends and to the horizontal member or crosspiece 0 of the bracing structure at their lower ends, said cross-piece having its ends doweled into or otherwise secured to the Vertical parts 2' of the backand bacleleg struc ture below the seat. It will be observed that in Fig. 2, as in Fig. 1,the back legs being rigidly held against movement toward each other at a point below the seat and the bracing structure being secured to the back and back-leg structure above the seat, the chair is strengthened and reinforced in the same manner as that shown in Fig. 1.
This application constitutes a division of my application for improvements in chairs, Serial No. 453,323.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination, with a chair having a seat and an arched back and back-leg structure, of a bracing structure formed substantially straight in side elevation and secured to the top of said arched back and back-leg structure and to the leg portions of said arched structure below the seat said bracing structure comprising a cross-piece forming the portion thereof secured to said leg portions and having its ends doweled into the latter and the portion of said bracing structure secured to the top of the arched structure having downwardly extending members doweled into the cross-piece, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a chair having a seat and an arched back and back-leg structure, of a bracing structure formed substantially straight in side elevation and comprising a cross-piece connecting the leg portions of said arched structure below the seat and an inverted U-shaped member attached in its upper part to the top of said arched structure and at its lower ends to said crosspiece, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this first day of February, 1909.
ALBERT VANNER, JR. lVitnesses \VM. H. KUN'rz, JOHN \V. STEWARD.
